The Tentacle: Yahoo Marissa Mayer: The Changing Face of Leadership http://tinyurl.com/cyh46uh by Kevin Dayhoff

Yahoo Marissa Mayer: The Changing Face of Leadership http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5709

By Kevin E. Dayhoff April 3, 2013

In a recent ‘lean in’ story posted on the new website launched by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Google employee number 20, Marissa Mayer weighed on how she decided to accept the position of president and CEO of Yahoo!

No meaningful conversation about the constantly changing dynamics of technology is possible without fully exploring the rising influence of women in leadership positions.

The discussion over the role of women in leadership positions has only increased since the July 2012 essay by Princeton professor Anne-Marie Slaughter, "Why Women Still Can't Have It All," was published in The Atlantic and Ms. Sandberg’s recently released book, “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead.”

Getting back to Ms. Mayer; she gave birth to a son last September. Kara Swisher wrote in the publication, “All Things D,” on March 29: “Sandberg and her team have been encouraging women to post their personal stories of when they leaned into their careers and Mayer certainly does that in her post, including discussing taking the job at the top of the troubled Silicon Valley Internet company when she was seven months pregnant…”

Ms. Mayer wrote in Lean In, “Looking back to reflect on the question: Could I really take the helm of Yahoo when I was 28 weeks pregnant?

Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer Leans In About How She Decided to Become CEO While Pregnant

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer just posted a “lean-in” story on the new site launched by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg in conjunction with her recent book, “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead.”

Sandberg and her team have been encouraging women to post their personal stories of when they leaned into their careers and Mayer certainly does that in her post, including discussing taking the job at the top of the troubled Silicon Valley Internet company when she was seven months pregnant….

[…]

Mayer took off from Yahoo only a few weeks after she had her baby son last fall, and she said it has turned out well for her. “I’ve come to realize that being a mother makes me a better executive, because motherhood forces prioritization,” she wrote. “Being a mom gives you so much more clarity on what is important.” … http://allthingsd.com/20130329/yahoos-marissa-mayer-leans-in-about-how-she-became-ceo/

More college women speak in creaks, thanks to pop stars

The influence of pop singers like Britney Spears and Ke$ha may actually be changing the way some young women speak, suggests a (small) new study.
The report, recently published online in the Journal of Voice, examines the prevalence of a speech pattern called "vocal fry," the creaky, rough, guttural sound that pop singers sometimes use to slip into lower notes. Nassima Abdelli-Beruh, one of the study authors (along with Lesley Wolk and Dianne Slavin) and a speech scientist at Long Island University, describes the sound like "rattled, popping air."... http://bodyodd.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/12/12/9393348-more-college-women-speak-in-creaks-thanks-to-pop-stars#.Tuay9qDH38s.facebook

Jerry Brown announces NOW endorsement one day after Meg Whitman slur

October 8, 2010 |  2:05 pm
Jerry Brown announced he has received the endorsement of the National Organization for Women, less than 24 hours after the emergence of a recorded message in which Brown can be heard in a conversation with advisors in which someone calls Whitman a "whore." Coincidence? You be the judge.
Whitman's campaign pounced after the audio was made public, sending out a release Thursday night from spokeswoman Sarah Pompei calling the use of the term "an insult to both Meg Whitman and to the women of California.  This is an appalling and unforgivable smear against Meg Whitman.  At the very least Mr. Brown tacitly approved this despicable slur and he himself may have used the term at least once on this recording."
As if on cue, Brown's campaign Friday released the endorsement from NOW championing Brown's record on women's rights.  "As Governor, Mayor, and Attorney General, Jerry Brown has promoted and defended women’s rights,” said California NOW President Patty Bellasalma...  http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/california-politics/2010/10/jerry-brown-announces-now-endorsement-one-day-after-meg-whitman-slur.html

Newsweek: Women Will Rule the World

Women Will Rule the World

Men were the main victims of the recession. The recovery will be female.

Reuben Singh / Reuben Singh

Rajni Bector, 67, a food specialist and one of the first female entrepreneurs in Ludhiana, Punjab India.

When historians write about the great recession of 2007–08, they may very well have a new name for it: the Mancession. It’s a term already being bandied about in the popular media as business writers chronicle the sad tales of the main victims of the recession: men. They were disproportionately represented in the industries hit hardest during the downturn, including financial services, manufacturing, and construction, and their higher salaries often put them first in the line of fire. Men are the victims of two thirds of the 11 million jobs lost since the recession began in 2007; in August 2009, when U.S. male unemployment stood at 11 percent (versus 8.3 for women), it was the largest unemployment gender gap in the postwar era. Those numbers have improved, a bit—new unemployment figures show men at 9.9 percent and women at 7.8—but not enough to stop Larry Summers, the president’s top economic adviser, from speculating recently, that “when the economy recovers, five years from now, one in six men who are 25 to 54 will not be working.”

If they are lucky, they’ll have wives who can take care of them. American women are already the breadwinners or co-breadwinners in two thirds of American households; in the European Union, women filled 75 percent of the 8 million new jobs created since 2000... http://www.newsweek.com/2010/07/06/women-will-rule-the-world.html

Reporter Accuses Dowd of - What Else?- Blind Date Profiling

helena-large.jpg Former Politico scribe Helena Andrews is calling the date that NYT columnist Maureen Dowd set her up on with Obama aide Reggie Love "racial profiling." Andrews writes about it in the latest issue of Marie Claire.

How dare Dowd assume she wants to date a black man?

A Web site called The Nytpicker has the scoop.

An excerpt
"I've got a guy for you," Dowd told Andrews. "He's so hot, it's perfect." Read the rest here: http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlDC/online_media/reporter_accuses_dowd_of_what_else_blind_date_profiling__161520.asp

The Nytpicker says:

Thursday, May 13, 2010

In the spring of 2008, NYT columnist Maureen Dowd fixed up Helena Andrews, a black former NYT assistant, on a blind date with Obama aide Reggie Love.

Two years later, the woman is now accusing Dowd of "racial profiling" in arranging the unsuccessful date -- to which Love showed up an hour late and in his gym clothes. Read the rest here: http://www.nytpick.com/2010/05/black-reporter-accuses-maureen-dowd-of.html

Meanwhile Ms. Andrews writes in "Marie Clair":

http://www.marieclaire.com/celebrity-lifestyle/articles/living/dating-racial-profiling

Dating Dilemma: Racial Profiling

One African-American woman pleads not to be set up on a blind date with the only black professional you know.

"I've got a guy for you. He's so hot, it's perfect." It was the spring of '08 when Maureen Dowd, the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist, decided to take it upon herself to find me a man — specifically, Reggie Love, Barack Obama's "body guy" (read: personal aide). Standing outside the auditorium in Philadelphia where Obama the candidate had just given his loaded race speech, I thought to myself, How could a woman I'd helped with a computer problem once as an assistant at the Times spot the man for me? "Don't be silly," she said, when I demurred. "My assistant will set it up."

I was 27 and working as the only black reporter at Politico.com when a black man was running for president. The issue of race in America had hit a fever pitch, and suddenly everyone seemed determined to cast me as Michelle redux — and all that was missing was my very own Barack. [...]

... I'm not saying that my colleagues and neighbors should have set me up with white friends, necessarily. I was just disappointed that, despite all my more awesome qualities, the main thing they all saw was my skin.

Recently, my mother met a black man at Ikea, gave him my card, and then yelled at me when I raised the obvious psycho-killer issues. She said he was nice, a lawyer. Like Maureen, Mom was playing into the kind of stereotypes I was trying to dodge. But I realized that both women just wanted to see me happy. And, even though I was grateful Ikea guy never called, I know that the more weird setups I endure, the better my chances of getting to Mr. Right, whatever his race.

Helena Andrews's memoir, Bitch Is the New Black (HarperCollins), is out this month. She writes a weekly column for Slate's TheRoot.com.

Read the rest here:http://www.marieclaire.com/celebrity-lifestyle/articles/living/dating-racial-profiling

~~~~~~
Besides - I always hated being set-up by friends for blind dates during the many years I was single... I liked being single at the time...
Iranian cleric: Loose women cause earthquates
Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi issues a warning about seismically slutty dames
Reuters/Eduardo Munoz//Salon
Amid all the recent speculation over what only feels like an unusual number of earthquakes around the world, an Iranian cleric has offered a novel explanation for the source of seismic activity: promiscuous women. Unless Iranians "take refuge in religion" and "adapt our lives to Islam's moral codes," they can expect to be "buried under the rubble," said Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi, a senior cleric, during Friday prayers in Tehran. As usual, these moral responsibilities are projected onto women's bodies: "Many women who do not dress modestly ... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which increases earthquakes," he said.
Just two weeks ago, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad predicted ... read the rest here: http://www.salon.com/life/sex/index.html?story=/mwt/broadsheet/2010/04/19/cleric_promiscuity_earthquakes
What Women Really Want For Christmas
Culture Buzz A garden centre in the UK is apologizing for publishing this advertisement….
OMG – Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
Hey, I think that if I got that for my wife for Christmas, even my kind, friendly and always understanding wife would promptly place the clothesline where the sun does not shine.
Although, once, I did ask her if I could get her a chainsaw for Christmas. I did not ask twice.
At Westminster polls in 1920, the 'Women Disappointed Them'
Webmaster’s note: Some folks have been in touch looking for this column… Here ya go. Enjoy 11/27/2008 KED
By Kevin Dayhoff Posted on http://www.explorecarroll.com/ 11/16/08
Sunday Carroll EAGLE ARCHIVE
The fact that women gained the right to vote was a milestone that got mixed reviews in Carroll County after the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified on Aug. 18, 1920.
It was an argument four decades in the making.
In 1878, a constitutional amendment to grant women the right to vote was introduced by Sen. A. A. Sargeant of California. Suffrage supporters called the proposal the "Anthony Amendment," for Susan B. Anthony.
When President Woodrow Wilson delivered his State of the Union message to Congress in December 1916, women in the galleries unfurled a large banner that read, "Mr. President, What Will You Do For Woman Suffrage?"
In October 1920, after women were finally allowed to vote, local newspapers carried several articles about women and the election, according to research for the Historical Society of Carroll County by historian Jay Graybeal.
An Oct. 29, 1920, newspaper article carried the headline: "The Republican Meet, A Remarkable Gathering." The article read: "On Tuesday evening the Armory in this city was filled both to its seating and standing capacity with men and women voters of the county to hear the issues of the campaign discussed. ...
"The first speaker was Mrs. S. K. Herr, of this city. Mrs. Herr received an ovation as she rose to speak and was frequently interrupted by outbursts of applause. She urged the women not only to vote but to study the issues and candidates that they may vote intelligently."
The article goes on to report:
"The Republican women of Westminster district have arranged for (an instruction) room near the polling place in each precinct ..."
"The voting place in precinct No. 1 will be the old Farmers and Mechanics Bank building. ... Voting place in No. 2 is Herr & Babylon's shop. ... Voting place in No. 3 is Firemen's Building. ... In precinct No. 4 the voting place is on Liberty street ..."
After the election, the Nov. 5, 1920 issue of the old Westminster paper, American Sentinel, carried the headline: "Women Disappointed Them."
"The men and women who were so bitterly opposed to giving women the ballot must have been keenly disappointed on Tuesday. None of the distressing scenes, turbulent conditions, verbal or physical combats predicted have been reported from any voting place in Carroll county, the State of Maryland or anywhere in the country.
"The women did not lose their womanly dignity or sacrifice the respect of the men, and we have not heard of any babies neglected or husbands compelled to cook their own meals while their wives were electioneering around the polls.
"Perhaps a few women said and did some things that would have been better left unsaid and undone, but there are legions of men who do this on every election day." Shocking. Well, maybe not so much.
One thing is certain. Some 88 years later, we still say and do things on Election Day that are "better left unsaid and undone."
