Another Obama administration czar agrees - 'kind of' - with Mao By: Mark Tapscott 10/21/09 3:19 PM
First, it was White House communications chief Anita Dunn telling a high school commencement audience that the murderous Chairman Mao was one of her "two favorite philosophers." Now, it's manufacturing czar Ron Bloom who it turns out "kinda" agrees with modern history's most prolific genocidal murderer that "power grows out of the barrel of a gun."

Leave it to the irrepressible Glenn Beck to dig up the video of Bloom speaking to a labor audience in 2008 and explaining what they had learned in the recent past. Here's the relevant passage:

"Generally speaking we get the joke. We know that the free market is nonsense. We know that the whole point is to game the system, to beat the market, or at least find someone who will pay you a lot of money because they're convinced that there is a free lunch. We know this is largely about power, that it's an adults only, no limit game. We kind of agree with Mao that political power comes largely from the barrel of a gun. And we get it that if you want a friend, you should get a dog." Bloom is a Harvard grad and former SEIU official with close ties to ACORN who also happens to have spent some years at an investment banking firm. He has lots of experience negotiating deals with big corporations that favor unionized workforces. So is it really possible for somebody with that kind of background to not...

Exxon edges out General Electric for Q3 lobbying crown By: Timothy P. Carney 10/21/09 2:35 PM
Exxon Mobil spent $7.16 million on lobbying in July, August, and September of this year, just edging out second-quarter lobbying king General Electric ($6.94 million) as the company spending the most on 3rd quarter lobbying.

The single biggest Q3 lobbying entity was the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which shelled out a record $34.7 million, more than any entity has ever spent.

Here are the top ten lobbying entities for the quarter:

- U.S Chamber of Commerce: $34.69 million - American Beverage Association: $7.33 million - Exxon Mobil: $7.16 million - General Electric: $6.94 million - Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers of America: $6.79 million - Nat'l Association of Manufacturers: $5.75 million - AARP: $5.68 million - FedEx: $5.61 million - Pfizer: $5.42 million - UPS: $4.41 million

Soda tax spurs lobbying explosion By: Timothy P. Carney 10/21/09 2:18 PM The American Beverage Association spent $7.33 million on lobbying last quarter, according to a new filing, more than the group had spent in 2001 through 2008 combined. Representing soda makers, the lobby ramped up its spending in reaction to proposals for a "fat tax" or "soda tax" to finance health-care reform.

Read the bill, stupid By: Barbara Hollingsworth 10/21/09 1:49 PM
Organizers of a “Read the Bill” petition (http://readthebill.org) were up on Capitol Hill today to hand over more than 21,000 signatures to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader John Boehner, demanding that Congress post bills online for at least 72 hours before voting.

The group supports bipartisan legislation sponsored by Rep. Brian Baird, D-WA, and Rep. John Culberson, R-TX, but House Resolution 554 – which would require a 72-hour posting of the 1,502-page Baucus health care bill before a vote – has stalled in Congress.

“The Finance Committee’s original, plain language bill version did a decent job covering the major parts of the legislation,” said Paul Blumenthal, senior writer at the Sunlight Foundation. “What should be most concerning are the provisions that no one is talking about, the enticements inserted for specific states or specific industries that fly under the radar.”

How Dede got the nod By: Michael Barone 10/21/09 1:48 PM
How did the hapless Dede Scozzafava, whose travails my Examiner colleague Mark Tapscott has chronicled, get the Republican nomination in the special election in New York’s 23rd congressional district? Blogger and tea party activist Michael Patrick Leahy has the scoop. It’s an interesting example of how local political stumbling can affect a race of some national significance. Any of the other eight candidates would apparently have received the Conservative party nomination and probably would have won the special without too much trouble. But in a district narrowly carried 51%-47% by George W. Bush in 2004 and 52%-47% by Barack Obama in 2008, Democrat Bill Owens now has a strong chance to capture the district for his party since many Republican voters, turned off by Scozzafava’s support of the Democratic stimulus package and the unions’ card check bill, will vote for Conservative nominee Doug Hoffman.

Windows 7 and Burger King

I found this ad for Windows 7 and Burger King on Twitpic: http://twitpic.com/photos/kevindayhoff here: http://twitpic.com/mlizq

I’m not sure I have the nerve to try Window 7 anytime soon. Fortunately I did not make the mistake many of my friends made by “down – err - upgrading” to Vista. I’m aware of a number of horror stories involving downtime and challenges in which Microsoft wanted writers to really be full-time Microsoft software technicians…

Then again, there is the persistent problem of Microsoft’s lack of any sort of meaningful customer service support – or at least that was my experience a number of years ago.

I laughed at this picture when I received it a number of years ago. Candidly, I would not care if customer support was located on the planet Mars, as long as it was helpful – and all too often it was not.

These days when I buy a product or engage a service, one of the determining factors in my decision to buy is how the question, “What is customer service like?” is answered.

Often when customer service is located overseas it is not really customer service but a Potemkin approach so that the company which sold the product can say that it provides customer service. All-too-often, the customer service employees located overseas are not provided with the “tools” or the training to provide real customer service.

I wonder if I am the only person in the world to have noticed that Bill Gates, the world’s richest man, made his fortune with a boorish and predacious company that sold a product that did not/does not work well – or performed poorly, was overpriced and had little, if no customer support? I’m just asking.

The ghost of Thomas Jefferson just collapsed and died

This year’s William and Mary stunning blond homecoming queen has a lip ring
Click here for a larger image: http://twitpic.com/mumm9 or here: http://kevindayhoff.tumblr.com/post/222499002/this-years-william-and-mary-homecoming-queen-is-a

The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg has crowned a stunning blond to be this year’s homecoming queen. However, the ghost of Thomas Jefferson may very well have stroked-out and died upon learning the news that this year’s homecoming queen has, well, ah, - a small silver lip ring.

The story, carried by the Daily Press, is introduced with: “WILLIAMSBURG - History was made without fanfare on Saturday.

“Jessee Vasold,
William and Mary's first … homecoming queen (with a small silver lip ring,) took the field at halftime of the Tribe's game against James Madison wearing a red shirt, black pants and a small silver lip ring to applause and not much other notice.

Vasold, a junior, and the other members of the homecoming court were introduced to the crowd, posed for pictures, and walked off the field.

“I knew I was nominated, but I was just surprised, because there were a lot of other really good candidates on the ballot," Vasold said. "I know all of the other girls, and they're wonderful people, really friendly. So I was surprised.”

[…]

William and Mary president Taylor Reveley had no problem with Vasold's selection, made in nominations and voting by students.

“‘I knew Jessee before,’ he said. ‘(It's) a little more publicity than normal for a homecoming queen, but it's just fine.’”

Now normally I do not carry stories about homecoming queens here, but I do like to follow developments at my niece’s alma mater and I thought you might be interested also…

WESTMINSTER MAYOR KEVIN UTZ PROCLAIMS OCTOBER 22, 2009 AS “BILL LIPPHARD DAY”

Westminster, MD – Westminster Mayor Kevin Utz proclaimed Thursday, October 22, 2009 as “Bill Lipphard Day” in the City of Westminster in recognition and grateful appreciation of his honor and dedication to our community and country.

While serving as a civilian fuel truck driver for Army contractor, KBR, Incorporated, Mr. Bill Lipphard was injured when his convoy was attacked by insurgents near Baghdad, Iraq on September 26, 2004. After months of recovery and a lengthy investigation of the incident, Mr. Lipphard was finally awarded the Defense of Freedom medal on July 30, 2009 by the Secretary of the Army, Pete Geren in a ceremony in Houston, Texas.

The Defense of Freedom medal, equivalent to the military Purple Heart, was created in response to the September 11th attack on the Pentagon to honor civilian employees of the Department of Defense injured or killed in the line of duty.

The Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Company No. 1 employed Mr. Lipphard as an EMT/Firefighter and recognizes the sacrifice he made while in harm’s way for our country, and on the 22nd day of October, 2009 they will celebrate his service.

Virginia’s Dirty Deeds

In less than two weeks, on November 3, our neighbor to the south, Virginia, will conduct a gubernatorial election that may give us our first insights as just how the nation really feels about the jumbled mess in which our great nation finds itself after about nine months of rule by President Barack Obama and the Democrat-controlled Congress.

The contest pits Democrat Virginia Commonwealth Senator Creigh Deeds against former Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell; and it has attracted national – and actually – international attention.

If hell owned an airline, Route 140 would be its landing strip.

DAYHOFF: Please enjoy Honoring the 'Hell Drivers of Taneytown,' in 1948 and today

Eagle Archive By Kevin Dayhoff

This month in history, 51 years to be exact, Taneytown bore witness to a "Dive Bomber Crash" at the fairgrounds.

A story in an October 1948 newspaper offers this exciting preview:

"The amazing 'Dive Bomber' crash, in which a daredevil sends a speeding stock sedan hurdling a two-ton truck and deliberately crashes his machine into a parked car, is listed as one of the featured thrillers scheduled at the Carroll County Fair grounds..."

[…]

What a hoot.

I must confess, I had never heard of the "Hell Drivers" before. In fact, I always thought "hell drivers" was a reference to the friendly folks with whom we "share" Route 140.

If hell owned an airline, Route 140 would be its landing strip.

[…]

If you have a death-defying story about driving on Route 140, don't just raise your finger, err, hand. Drop us a note or share it in the comment section on http://www.explorecarroll.com/.

On October 9, Michael Gerson wrote in Townhall.com, “The Virginia race does not merely reflect national trends; it will help determine those trends.

The Main Thing
Derek Shackelford
It has been 10 months since Barack Obama took the oath of office as President of the United States. He has been under tremendous scrutiny ever since.

Weird Election, Maybe Strange
Roy Meachum
My professional observing of Frederick politics started in 1984, right after I voted locally for the first time; I moved here from Washington only the year before. Working as a member of the White House press corps did not prepare me for the move, in any way.

Another Governmental Boondoggle
Farrell Keough
As predicted one year ago, the Office of Sustainability is working toward growth even in these most dire of times.

Crazy Like a Fox...
Richard B. Weldon Jr.
Senator Olympia Snowe (R., ME) has never been an easily defined politician. In fact, in many ways, Senator Snowe defies categorization in the traditional political sense.

The Heavy Time
Steven R. Berryman
Boundless optimism toward future prospects and possibilities used to mark the American Spirit. Now, we make zero-sum choices in our lives, sometimes with no good outcomes, and are lead by a president who would have us borrow wealth instead of creating it.

Rush Limbaugh, the NFL, and Other Tidbits
Michael Kurtianyk
Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha! Rush Limbaugh was approached earlier this year and asked to join a group of investors attempting to purchase the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League. Too funny.

A New Light on Winchester Hall’s Scheming
Roy Meachum
The Frederick News-Post’s Meg Tully reported this week: “The Frederick County Commissioners voted 4-1 Tuesday to call for a special election for those who live on those properties as one more way to delay or stop the much-debated annexations.”

Transparent Politics
Joe Charlebois
According to Real Clear Politics – a summary of five leading polls – the Congress enjoyed their highest approval ratings in years – in March of this year. The highpoint for the two legislative bodies was on March 12th with a rating of 37%.

Arise from the Sofa
Patricia A. Kelly
November 3 is coming fast. It’s the date of Frederick’s city election. Voter turnout for this election is often low, but was truly abysmal during the primary this year. We may not have been motivated, possibly because the city election stands on its own, or, on the Republican, side by the withdrawal of Ron Tobin, the second major candidate.

…A Good Thing
Tony Soltero
When I first heard that President Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize, my initial reaction was a mixture of pride and puzzlement. While it's always gratifying to have an American win what is perhaps the most prestigious honor in the world, it did seem a bit premature for the Nobel Committee to give its award to a man who's only been the leader of the Free World for a few months.

Was Clunker Buying A Good Idea?
Bill Brosius
You’re offering me $4,500 for this old piece of junk? Where do I get the money? But there is a catch to it, right? I have to buy a new car I don’t need to get rid of this junker I am through with?

A case of premature adulation
Kevin E. Dayhoff
Last Friday was the birthday of the Obama family dog and something else. Oh, now I remember. It was the day that President Barack Obama was awarded the Noble Peace Prize.

To Liposuction – or Not!
Tom McLaughlin
Kuching, Malaysia – “I like my tummy soft and round, not flat and hard like the cold hard ground” I sang to myself. These were remnants of a song I had heard on one of those PBS radio shows featuring local artists from around the country. I don’t remember the tune except it was country, but the words have stuck with me ever since.

Michael Kahn Does “The Alchemist!”
Roy Meachum

I’ve warned you about Michael Kahn before. The artistic director of Washington’s Shakespeare Theatre Company continues to make stage classics work by inserting shtickla the writer could not have imagined. He’s done it again in “The Alchemist,” by Ben Jonson.

Tuesday, October 13, 2009
No to County Commissioners
Roy Meachum
Kai Hagen and John L. “Lennie” Thompson cannot count on me; I will not sign the petition putting on the ballot the question of annexing three properties. And the same answer goes to the other commissioners.

Procrastination is the Thief of Time
Nick Diaz
In my last installment, I mentioned the “19-millimeter socket wrench” a mathematics student needs to bring success into his mathematical learning habits. Keep in mind that these observations and recommendations apply to mathematics students at all levels – middle and high school as well as college. Math is math, regardless of what course or level; good academic habits are universal.

Reviewing Contentiousness
Blaine R. Young
For the most part the dust has settled and the situation involving my brother Brad and the Walkersville High School girls softball team has been brought to closure. But this case was so bizarre, and so emblematic of the degree to which the Frederick County Board of Education is out of touch with reality, that it merits one last commentary.

Manipulation Nation
Steven R. Berryman
The control of your future behavior on an epic scale is the goal by some that will make us “The Manipulation Nation.”

From Hither, Thither and Yon
Michael Kurtianyk
Quite the furor over President Barack Obama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize this year, isn’t it? Such silliness! The deadline for the nominating committee to submit candidates was February 2nd, and his name was submitted on time.
