Baltimore Sun: O’Malley wins second term as governor

Mikulski, 6 U.S. House incumbents also re-elected; Arundel Mills slots proposal, Kratovil-Harris race results still to come...  http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/bs-md-election-web-updates-20101102,0,7269908.story
Gov. Martin O'Malley has won a second term in Annapolis, handing Republican former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. a second consecutive statewide defeat, the Associated Press is reporting.
The outcome indicates that voters in Maryland, with twice as many registered Democrats as Republicans, are bucking a nationwide hostility toward incumbent Democrats.
U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, a Democrat, and five Democratic members of the House of Representative coasted to re-election. Winners included Elijah E. Cummings, C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger,John Sarbanes, Donna Edwards and Chris Van Hollen.
The state's lone Republican congressman, Roscoe Bartlett, also won another two-year term...  http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/bs-md-election-web-updates-20101102,0,7269908.story

Vote for the hungry with a can of food at the polls on election day

By Kevin Dayhoff Posted 11/02/10

Today is election day in Carroll County, but voters can also vote with their stomachs — or at least help others do that — by donating cans of food for the hungry at the polls.

Martin Radinsky, Frank Baylor, Kelly Buie, Bob Mitchell, David and Laura O’Callaghan have again organized the election day food drive to support Carroll County Food Sunday.

The goal, according to Radinsky, is to have volunteers staffing collection boxes at all the polling places.

The community service event will be conducted in a non-partisan fashion and volunteers have been asked not to engage in political activity while collecting for Carroll County Food Sunday.

“We welcome the support from all organizations, political clubs, candidates, and political parties in helping to feed our neighbors in need in Carroll County,” said Radinsky.  “In November 2008, Carroll County voters filled seven 150-cubic foot containers with donated food.

“We want to build (the food collection effort) into a Carroll County habit for elections in the future,” said Radinsky.  “When and where else in Carroll County are you going to get 50,000 (people) in one place?

“If only half of all the voters in Carroll County brought one can of food each; that's 25,000 cans of food.”

Radinsky said that every candidate with whom he has spoken has been very supportive of the Carroll County voter food drive.  Hopefully all the candidates will take the opportunity to spread the word.

Should you wish to volunteer to assist in this community service project e-mail Martin Radinsky at maradinsky@comcast.net or call 443-520-7750.

Carroll County Food Sunday will offer Community Service Hours for any student wishing to volunteer their time.

Carroll County Food Sunday is run by volunteers, and is always in need of additional volunteer help. Donations of money and/or food are gladly accepted.

Rural Maryland Surges to the Polls by Joe Getty

Rural Maryland Surges to the Polls
Getty for Senate 2010November 2, 2010
Voters are surging to the polls in State Senate District 5 and the rest of rural Maryland.

The throng of voters coming to the polls in Carroll County and northern Baltimore County is truly exhilarating.

Please continue whatever your are doing to get all of our family, friends, neighbors and other like-minded voters to the polls - it is working!

Rural Maryland is turning out - and obviously this is a bad sign for the incumbent statewide leadership of Maryland. They are looking at the same numbers and they will redouble their efforts to "knock and drag" people to the polls in low-turnout communities.

To win in Maryland, we can't just be good - we have to be excellent. As we close out the polls on Election Day, I offer the two following observations from the first 7 hours of voting:

1. Do you have an hour or two to spare at a Victory Center: The Republican party victory centers will be making calls all afternoon to ensure that we get the maximum highest turnout. If you want to join in this last-minute "get-out-the-vote" drive, call Chris Cavey at (410) 562-7999 or check on the web for the nearest call center to you at www.mdgop.org/victory.

2.  Remind all voters to check their ballot during the review process at the end of touchscreen voting: There have been several instances during Early Voting and today when voters have selected the Republican candidate but in the final review the Democrat candidate is marked with an "X". Election officials state that this can happen because of improper machine calibration or when some holds their finger on the screen for too long (it jumps to the next category and automatically selects the first candidate - always a Democrat).
