Election day food drive supports Carroll County Food Sunday

Vote for the hungry with a can of food at the polls on election day

By Kevin Dayhoff Posted 11/02/10

Today is election day in Carroll County, but voters can also vote with their stomachs — or at least help others do that — by donating cans of food for the hungry at the polls.

Martin Radinsky, Frank Baylor, Kelly Buie, Bob Mitchell, David and Laura O’Callaghan have again organized the election day food drive to support Carroll County Food Sunday.

The goal, according to Radinsky, is to have volunteers staffing collection boxes at all the polling places.

The community service event will be conducted in a non-partisan fashion and volunteers have been asked not to engage in political activity while collecting for Carroll County Food Sunday.

“We welcome the support from all organizations, political clubs, candidates, and political parties in helping to feed our neighbors in need in Carroll County,” said Radinsky.  “In November 2008, Carroll County voters filled seven 150-cubic foot containers with donated food.

“We want to build (the food collection effort) into a Carroll County habit for elections in the future,” said Radinsky.  “When and where else in Carroll County are you going to get 50,000 (people) in one place?

“If only half of all the voters in Carroll County brought one can of food each; that's 25,000 cans of food.”

Radinsky said that every candidate with whom he has spoken has been very supportive of the Carroll County voter food drive.  Hopefully all the candidates will take the opportunity to spread the word.

Should you wish to volunteer to assist in this community service project e-mail Martin Radinsky at maradinsky@comcast.net or call 443-520-7750.

Carroll County Food Sunday will offer Community Service Hours for any student wishing to volunteer their time.

Carroll County Food Sunday is run by volunteers, and is always in need of additional volunteer help. Donations of money and/or food are gladly accepted.
