Plan B solution to unemploymentThe rate of unemployment continues to harry the local and national economy as the nation continues to try to figure-out an exit strategy to an entrenched recession. Last Friday the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the national jobless rate held steady at 9.7 percent.
A Review – Sexy “Canterbury Tales”
First it should be established the Maryland Ensemble Theatre operates in the basement of what was once the Francis Scott Key Hotel. It’s possible to argue that some of the bedroom antics upstairs must have moved downstairs.
Rising from the Dead
Banda Aceh, Indonesia – The first wave was about three meters high, more like a tidal surge. Survivors remember it being boiling hot. The second wave climbed 100 meters pushing over five kilometers inland, carrying a 2,600-metric-ton ship on its back. The third was just as high but with cold water, very cold, traveling almost as far the second. It shifted the ship to another location.

Pressure on the PopeThe “pope story” sprouted longer legs than I supposed; Easter Sunday it developed a definite hitch in its giddy-up that promises to stretch people’s reactions into Memorial Day, or beyond. And the resulting media attention. It is no longer about sexual abuse; it now has to do with the basic structure of the Roman Catholic Church.
A Dynamic Transformation
We have seen a tremendous sea change in the Board of County Commissioners of late. Much of this is due to the newly appointed Commissioner Blaine Young.

Campaign Diary – On The Road Again…..March 27-29 – Administrivia – One of the things no one tells you about when running a campaign is the balancing act between work, campaign, and family. I had a long list of things I needed to take care of for the campaign – marketing, volunteers, etc., which I’d planned to do Saturday morning.

Yes, We Still CanYou may remember Marvel Comics’ Clark Kent, a mild and diffident dude who honed from afar after Lois Lane, a fellow reporter at The Daily Planet. He was totally different after stepping into a phone booth and emerging as Superman. Something like that took place before our very eyes to the present resident of the White House.
Opening Day
On Thursday, April 10, 1980, a 13-year-old boy and his girlfriend were dropped off at a PAT bus stop on Middle Road by their parents. The stop was just 11 miles from their destination – the 10-year-old concrete coliseum called Three Rivers Stadium, the home of the presiding World Series Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Hope for another Championship started that day.

The Census, Immigration and Other StoriesI thought the uproar over the census was right wing ridiculousness, but then I sat down and really read my form.
Another dip into taxpayers’ pockets…
When have you ever seen government get involved in anything and it not cost more money? Obamacare passed with no answers. Next is the local Trashcare bill making its way through the General Assembly.
Not quite what you’d expect…
The sky is falling! The sky is falling! The sky is falling! That is what some would have us to believe. The problem in this is not in reference to the recent passage of the healthcare law. More on that later. No, this inference of the sky is falling has to do with a recent Harris Poll of Republican attitudes toward President Barack Obama.

“We are done”On March 23 President Barack Obama signed into law the obese 2,032-page, 25-pound “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.”
Orangutans on the Market
Traveling the Little Sambas River, Borneo, Indonesia – We had hoped to view orangutans. We did. But, it wasn’t what we expected.
The History of Health Insurance – Part 2
Yesterday we reviewed both the government and private market responses to the nation’s insurance needs. Now we shall see if the actions of the past are a precursor to the present and future happenings with our new healthcare law.

How Long? You might think the Vatican’s role in sexual scandals is the result of an eager-beaver press, intent on bringing down the Roman Catholic Church. That is neither true nor necessary.
A New Approach for Frederick County
Imagine that you could send your child to a school that reflected your aspirations for your child's education. Imagine not worrying whether your child was adequately challenged in the classroom, and feeling confident that he or she was truly prepared for college and beyond. Now imagine not going into debt to pay for this, since you are already paying taxes to fund this.
The History of Health Insurance – Part 1
Many articles and commentaries are floating around about the newly passed healthcare law. It is worth our time to review how we got to this point and what the pitfalls were in the creation of insurance programs in the United States.

A Love LetterIf he were still here, I’d ask Tom “Petey” Nuse if it was okay to write a love letter to his wife, Wanda. He’s no longer with us, but I suspect he might grant his approval. My wife won’t mind, either. She has always referred to Wanda as my girlfriend.
Campaign Diary – A Potpourri
Saturday, March 20 – FCBA Home Show – I had the opportunity to take my family to the Fairgrounds today for the Frederick County Builders’ Association Home Show. It was a beautiful day, and when I was there, the booths were busy.
