Maryland State Sen. Larry Haines, R-5th District will not seek a sixth term in state - by Bryan Sears Senate

State Sen. Larry Haines, R-5th District, had been pondering his future in elected politics for some time when he found a note from his wife, Jane, sitting at his place at the table one morning.

The note was a gentle reminder of a promise the five-term Republican senator made during his first campaign in 1990.

During that campaign, Haines said, he told supporters he did not want to be a career politician.

Jane’s note to her husband read: “I think 20 years is pushing a career.”

“She was sending a message in a subtle way,” Haines, 72, said Monday after announcing he would not seek a sixth term.

Getty poised to run

Haines said that in addition to helping Bob Ehrlich’s campaign for re-election in Carroll County, he also plans to devote some attention to finding his replacement.

“I guess anyone who retires considers, ‘Who’s going to replace me? Who’s going to fill my seat?’ ” Haines said.

He said he hopes to convince Republican former Del. Joseph Getty, of Manchester, who served as legislative and policy director under then-Gov. Robert Ehrlich, to run for the office.

For his part, Getty said Monday that he doesn’t need much convincing. The former two-term delegate said he plans to send an e-mail to supporters Tuesday morning announcing his candidacy for Haines’ seat.
