The Exhibit: Conceived by curator and Indofile Maggie Ball, this exhibit of memory and fantasy will delight the senses and evoke feelings of longing for times and places of transcendent beauty.  It is a translation of impressions inspired by many journeys to India - a homage to the spirit of a country possessed of extraordinary beauty, esoteric philosophy and compelling contradiction. From backroads and bazaars, art, decorative craft, textiles and jewelry merge to create a magical and sacred ambience sure to inspire. Look for related events throughout the semester.

The Jayamangala Dance Company performs Indian classical temple style of dance called "Bharatanatyam" which uses strong footwork, elegant hand gestures, facial emotions and gorgeous traditional costumes to tell stories of Hindu mythology and modern interpretations in an eclectic collection of solo and group works.

In keeping with the college's mission to promote broader understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity, this exhibit is part of a multi-event series of India related programs. For information about additional India related events and workshops sponsored by Continuing Education & Training, call 410-386-8100.

Henna Mehndi: The Body Beautiful

Sunday, Oct. 17 - Friday, Dec. 3

A further extension of this semester's India theme explores the ancient and revered ceremonial art-form of Henna painting. In India, decorative, temporary body painting Mehndi, is used to celebrate special rites of passage and ceremonial occasions such as weddings. Images of gorgeous Henna applications and accompanying commentary provide insight into the symbolic and sacred nature of the custom. At a specified time during the run of the exhibit a Henna artist will be at the college embellishing your body while demonstrating the technique!

More than 1.5 million women are physically and/or sexually abused by an intimate partner every year in the United States, according to information provided by the Family and Children’s Services of Central Maryland in Westminster

To put the crime of domestic violence into perspective; during the course of the Vietnam War, over 58,000 American service members lost their lives. During the same time period, “51,000 American women were killed in the U.S., by men who supposedly loved them,” according to Donald J. Hunt, who wrote “Break the Silence,” in May 1996.

In the time it takes you to drink a cup of coffee and read this column, “thirteen women will be physically abused in America,” according to Mr. Hunt.

In the latest information available for this article, from 2001 to 2005 the average number of domestic violence reports was 463, according to Maryland State Police records - Uniform Crime Reports.

From 2001 to 2005, the average number of interim protective orders was 103, temporary orders were 743, and final protective orders granted were an average of 399.

The web site for Family and Children’s Services presents sobering facts about domestic violence:

More women between the ages of 15 to 44 are injured due to domestic violence than in car accidents, mugging and rapes combined. Of women murdered in the United States, it is estimated that more than 50 percent were killed by their current or former male partner.

Sixty-three percent of men under age 21 who are incarcerated in the U.S. for homicide, are serving time for killing their mother's abuser. Violent juvenile offenders are four times more likely to have grown up in a home where they saw violence than the population at large.

Across the nation, fifty percent of homeless women and children left their homes to escape domestic violence. Of women who visit medical emergency rooms, it is estimated that up to 35 percent of injuries resulted from domestic violence.

Lost wages, sick leave, absenteeism, and non-productivity resulting from domestic violence cost U.S. businesses $100 million annually.

Tickets for the concert are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children 16 and under. They are available at the Carroll Arts Council, Coffey Music, Optics Limited, Stu’s Music, Hess Music, Family and Children's Services Office, and the Human Services Programs office.

ARTS AND CULTURE TASK FORCE APPOINTED

Tri-Street Area Advisory Committee selects members for important group

Westminster, MD - Mayor Kevin Utz appointed the newly formed "Arts and Culture Task Force" as part of the Tri-Street Area Advisory Committee Task Force activities. The Mayor and Common Council created the Tri-Street Area Advisory Committee ('Tri-Street Committee") in 2008 to address neighborhood issues and concerns in the area of Pennsylvania Avenue, Union Street and West Main Street, with the objective of creating an action plan for improvement. The Task Force was chaired by Councilman Greg Pecoraro and Councilwoman Suzanne Albert served as the vice chair. The twenty member committee met five times and presented its final report on March 9, 2009. That report was unanimously accepted by the Mayor and Common Council and implementation of its recommendations has begun.

Under the goal of building economic vitality, the report recommended the creation of a task force of representatives from the City, Carroll County Arts Council, Tri-Street Area Advisory Committee, property owners, artisans and others, to be called the "Arts and Culture Task Force", to develop an "arts, culture and small business overlay zone" for the Tri-Street neighborhood. The report urged the task force to focus on the Carroll Arts Center as a critical anchor in the Tri-Street neighborhood and to work to generate public support for the efforts of the Carroll County Arts Council to enhance this important facility and its programs.

Mayor Utz offered the following appointments to the newly formed "Arts and Culture Task Force."

"Arts and Culture Task Force"

Mayor and Council: Councilwoman Suzanne Albert

Carroll County Arts Council: Sandy Oxx and Councilwoman Suzanne Albert (Council Liaison to the Carroll County Arts Council)

McDaniel College: Beth Gerl and Sue Bloom

Tri-Street Area Advisory Committee: Jackie Finch and Lyndi McNulty

Property Owners Ed Maiello, Lou Chang, Lloyd Helt

Artisans Sarah DeLuca and Bob Coffey

Pamela Zappardino will serve as the Chairperson of the Task Force.

The date, time, and location for the first meeting has not been finalized, but the group will hold the meetings at the Carroll County Arts Center.

Arbor Day Activities and Tree City USA for Westminster

In commemorating Arbor Day, the City of Westminster Tree Commission has undertaken projects to enhance the tree canopy, landscaping, and appearance of downtown Westminster.

Among the many projects is a scheduled installation of three Cherry Trees at Belle Grove Square Thursday April 2, 3:30 pm, where Mayor Tom Ferguson will read an Arbor Day proclamation, declaring Arbor Day and Westminster’s dedication to it. The trees are replacements for other trees that were in poor health and that posed a threat to safety. The remaining trees have been inspected for safety issues as well as pruned, if necessary.

Another three replacement trees will be installed on Willis St. in cooperation with the Parkview condominium association—again due to health issues. Another 11 street trees will be installed on West Main, Pennsylvania Ave, and John St, replacing trees that were previously removed or had died.

Over 120 large shrubs (Bottlebrush Buckeye) were installed along the Wakefield Valley Trail. These plants will eventually provide shade for the trail, provide habitat for wildlife, and reduce the mowing necessary in that area.

The activities are coordinated by the Westminster Tree Commission, a group of local volunteers charged with overseeing the City’s robust urban tree canopy program. Thanks to the efforts of the Tree Commission and the City’s grounds maintenance staff, Westminster achieved Tree City USA (Arbor Day Foundation) designation for the 21st consecutive year in 2008. Only five other municipalities in Maryland have earned this distinction more often than Westminster.

If you have any questions about the event, or if you want to participate on the Tree Commission, please contact Tim Rogers, Natural and Cultural Resources Planner, at 410-848-4628.
