This week in The Tentacle

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 A case of premature adulation by Kevin E. Dayhoff
Last Friday was the birthday of the Obama family dog and something else. Oh, now I remember. It was the day that President Barack Obama was awarded the Noble Peace Prize.

To Liposuction – or Not!
Tom McLaughlin
Kuching, Malaysia – “I like my tummy soft and round, not flat and hard like the cold hard ground” I sang to myself. These were remnants of a song I had heard on one of those PBS radio shows featuring local artists from around the country. I don’t remember the tune except it was country, but the words have stuck with me ever since.

Michael Kahn Does “The Alchemist!”
Roy Meachum
I’ve warned you about Michael Kahn before. The artistic director of Washington’s Shakespeare Theatre Company continues to make stage classics work by inserting shtickla the writer could not have imagined. He’s done it again in “The Alchemist,” by Ben Jonson.

No to County Commissioners
Roy Meachum
Kai Hagen and John L. “Lennie” Thompson cannot count on me; I will not sign the petition putting on the ballot the question of annexing three properties. And the same answer goes to the other commissioners.

Procrastination is the Thief of Time
Nick Diaz
In my last installment, I mentioned the “19-millimeter socket wrench” a mathematics student needs to bring success into his mathematical learning habits. Keep in mind that these observations and recommendations apply to mathematics students at all levels – middle and high school as well as college. Math is math, regardless of what course or level; good academic habits are universal.

Reviewing Contentiousness
Blaine R. Young
For the most part the dust has settled and the situation involving my brother Brad and the Walkersville High School girls softball team has been brought to closure. But this case was so bizarre, and so emblematic of the degree to which the Frederick County Board of Education is out of touch with reality, that it merits one last commentary.

Manipulation Nation
Steven R. Berryman
The control of your future behavior on an epic scale is the goal by some that will make us “The Manipulation Nation.”

From Hither, Thither and Yon
Michael Kurtianyk
Quite the furor over President Barack Obama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize this year, isn’t it? Such silliness! The deadline for the nominating committee to submit candidates was February 2nd, and his name was submitted on time.

False Media Prophets
Roy Meachum
The Washington Post and The New York Times have changed their tune. Both powerful newspapers bellowed intense “jingoism” at Iraq’s invasion. They thoughtlessly went along with what in columns I called an expression of national egotism. You wouldn’t know it if you read either paper today.

Cheap Political Tricks
Joe Charlebois
Newsflash: According to Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski, men and women are the same! This past weekend Senator Mikulski excoriated the insurance industry for treating men and women differently. She noted that women can pay much more for healthcare insurance than a man of the same age.

Changing Strategies, Positive Results
Chris Cavey
Few people inside or outside the Party of Lincoln would argue the fact that now is the time to invest in Republicans, because everyone knows buying low always yields the best profit. Currently my beloved party is at a low ebb; however, there are signs that the stock will soon rise.

The Good and The Helpful
Joan McIntyre
The poor, picked on Frederick County Board of Education does something that appears to be a good idea and might actually help – and save money to boot – and here I go just raining on its parade. Before I tell you why, let me say I'm actually glad to hear of their plans. I also hope it catches on and becomes a norm for all administrative staff.

Always Remembered, Never Forgotten
Kevin E. Dayhoff
Last Sunday, friends and family from all over the country gathered at the New Windsor fire company social hall to pay their last respects to Guy Babylon, Elton John’s keyboardist for 21 years. Guy Babylon, 52, died at his Los Angles home on September 2.

“…And Yesterday’s Done….”
Tom McLaughlin
Middletown, MD – “It’s a grand old flag, it’s a free flying flag, forever may it wave!” This tune ran through my head as I walked up the hill to the parking lot in Middletown for the annual celebration of Middletown Days. I stopped and watched a fife and bugle ensemble, dressed in 1776 uniforms, playing a patriotic song whose melody I recognized but could not pinpoint. A tear came to my eye.

In the Street Origin
Roy Meachum
I don’t remember that there were several thousand marching; I could be wrong. Among the numerous people who poured out that October Saturday in 1983 were my then-wife, her 88-year-old father and me. The weather was decent; I can’t recall details. But it didn’t rain that day, nor was it beastly hot.

Remembering The Forgotten
Farrell Keough
I recently got back from Iowa. I would have invited you, but they were full.

It’s “The Message,” Stupid
Steven R. Berryman
Freedom of speech may be relegated to the past, if the voices of our Founding Fathers are not re-remembered, and quickly. Some attempts to exercise our First, and most valuable amendment to the Constitution, upon examination, are really attacks on the message itself.

A Comfortable Chair and a Good Book
Michael Kurtianyk
The most responses I’ve received to my contributions to TheTentacle.com have come from two recent posts: my summer reading list and my take on the city aldermanic race (I love that word: “aldermanic”; so many connotations). I may post something on the mayoral race prior to the General Election, but until then, here’s my Fall Reading List:

The Tentacle: A case of premature adulation

The Tentacle http://www.thetentacle.com/ : A case of premature adulation by Kevin E. Dayhoff October 14, 2009

Last Friday was the birthday of the Obama family dog and something else. Oh, now I remember. It was the day that President Barack Obama was awarded the Noble Peace Prize.

The lead paragraph in The New York Times in the wee hours of the morning when the news was announced read: “The U.S. president Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize ‘for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,’ the Nobel Foundation said in Sweden on Friday.”

I am not making this up.

Much of the world’s reaction, even from die-hard sycophant supporters of President Obama, was complete surprise, bordering on total disbelief.

EAGLE ARCHIVE By Kevin Dayhoff Posted on http://explorecarroll.com/community/3484/eaglearchive/ 10/04/09

One of the more interesting tidbits of history from October in yesteryear didn't take place in Carroll County, but had an impact upon our farming community — and what television looks like today.

It was Oct. 5, 1947, that the first televised presidential speech took place. President Harry S. Truman took to the airwaves to deliver an address to the nation.

The topic wasn't war, the economy or health care ... it was wheat.

What was so important about wheat? Glad you asked. Barely two years had passed since the devastating war in Europe had ended, and the continent was still in chaos.

I do not watch much of “Top 40” commercial television; however I have come to appreciate David Zurawik’s commentary on the contemporary pop-culture scene on the tube. It is intelligent and informative and keeps me up-to-date without having the dreadful experience of having to watch it.

About David Zurawik Click here for a larger image: http://twitpic.com/la8oe

I've been The Baltimore Sun's TV critic since 1989. My writings on TV and media have appeared in such publications as TV Guide, Esquire magazine and American Journalism Review.

I have a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an M.A. in specialized reporting (on popular culture) from the University of Wisconsin.

I'm the author of The Jews of Prime Time (Brandeis University Press), a look at 50 years of Jewish characters and identity on network TV. I have also been with WYPR-FM (88.1) radio since 1994 and can be heard Thursday mornings at 7:30 doing a weekly "Take on Television" report.

Investigative Voice: Md. NAACP Wants To Limit Governor's Power To Replace Dixon If She Is Convicted By Stephen Janis

The Maryland State Conference of the NAACP calls for legislation to limit the governor's power to appoint a replacement if Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon is convicted of misconduct.

By Stephen Janis Sunday, 11 October 2009

The continuing legal troubles of Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon has prompted the Maryland State Conference of the NAACP to approve a push for legislation that would limit the governor options for choosing a new mayor, if she is convicted of misconduct while in office.

October 10, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff

Somewhere just outside of Reading, Pennsylvania, October 10, 2009 - - Although those of us who know Carroll County Times staff writer, Carrie Ann Knauer, understand that she has quickly become a brand-name and an institution all to herself; many are not aware that, according to Wikipedia, she is also a community located in Brecknock Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, located 3.4 miles from Adamstown and 0.9 miles from Alleghenyville.

According to “PA HomeTownLocator,” “Knauers is a community or populated place (Class Code U6) located in Berks County at latitude 40.247 and longitude -75.997 (Knauers Panoramio Photos). The elevation is 774 feet. Knauers appears on the Morgantown U.S. Geological Survey Map. Berks County is in the Eastern time zone (GMT -5). Observes DST? Yes. Current Time. In a write-up on AmericanTowns.com:

“Brecknock Township, (889 Alleghenyville Road Mohnton, PA 19540) [was] named after the cathedral town of Brecon, capitol of Breconshire (or Brecknockshire), Wales, was founded in 1740 as a part of Lancaster County. The Township was divided at the founding of Berks County in 1752. The earliest permanent settlers on the Berks County side were three Bowman brothers, namely Jacob, John, and Christian, who moved up from Pequea about 1735 to occupy land along the upper part of the Allegheny Creek.

“The first tax collector for Brecknock (Berks) was Jeremiah Ziemer who immigrated from Germany in 1738. The first tax list in 1752 contained 36 names, all of German, Alsatian, and Swiss origin. The first federal census in 1790 reported that there were 60 households in the Township. By 1870 there were four churches in Brecknock – two Mennonite churches, one Lutheran-Reformed Union church, and one independent church.

“By 1893 there were three U.S. Post Offices – Knauers, Alleghenyville, and Hummel’s Store, all of which were closed by 1913, after which postal service was provided from Mohnton. There were six one-room public schools operating in the Township by 1895 – Allegheny, Maple Grove, Stafford, Trostel’s, Gebhart (Union), and Remp’s, all of which were closed by Fall of 1955 when the new Brecknock School opened.

“In 1900 there were 203 property owners, 54 tenant families, and seven single men on the tax list. Total tax receipts for the year ending March 24, 1900 amounted to $1,355.00, nearly all of which went for road maintenance. Throughout its history Brecknock Township has been almost entirely agricultural.

“Until recent times, nearly all of its residents were engaged in dairy and related farming, or fruit and vegetable truck farming. Also several residents were employed in related occupations such as harness-making, blacksmithing, charcoal making for nearby iron furnaces, timbering, and the operation of sawmills and gristmills. Taverns were operated at various times at Knauers and Hummel’s Store.” (Additional information may be found at
Brecknock Township or here: http://www.americantowns.com/pa/mohnton/organization/brecknook_township

It is not known if our “The Knauer” was ever involved in the above-mentioned tavern.

For additional context, according to Wikipedia, the adjacent municipalities include Spring Township, Berks County (northwest); Cumru Township, Berks County (north); Robeson Township, Berks County (east); Caernarvon Township, Berks County (southeast); Brecknock Township, Lancaster County (southwest); and Adamstown Lancaster County (southwest)

Westminster and Carroll County officials are mourning the loss of City Clerk Laurell Taylor, who died at her home Thursday morning.

“She was a very dedicated city employee,” Mayor Kevin Utz said in an interview with The Eagle. “She did everything asked of her. She would never bat an eye at anything she had to do.”

Arrangements are pending, and the cause of death is unknown at this time, Utz said.

Laurell Taylor, Westminster City Clerk since 2002, has died

Laurell Taylor, Westminster City Clerk since 2002, has died

October 9, 2009

Word spread quickly through the Carroll County community yesterday Westminster City Clerk Laurell Taylor died unexpectedly at her home in the early morning.

Before she was appointed City Clerk on February 11, 2002, she had served fourteen years Carroll County government, as an in-house attorney and administrator.

In Westminster she was appointed to replace Mr. John Dudderar who retired on January 31, 2002 after 37 years of service with the city. The city received over 110 applications for the position which were reviewed by the Westminster City Clerk Selection Committee for over a month.

During her tenure with Carroll County government, the county law department completed several major projects including the codification and computerization of county laws, regular staff training sessions, and the implementation of an overhaul of county laws. All of these experiences served her well with the City of Westminster.

Taylor participated actively in statewide and national organizations that impact local municipal governments, such as the Local Government Insurance Trust (LGIT) and the International Municipal Law Officers' Association.

She was a graduate of Towson University and had a law degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law.

No further information is available at this time.

UPDATE: markknoller Worth noting, Pres. Obama took office less than 10 days before the Feb. 1 deadline for Nobel Prize nominations.

Former Pres. Jimmy Carter won the prize in 2002 - more than two decades after he left office.

Only two other sitting US Presidents have won the Nobel Peace Prize: Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 and Woodrow Wilson in 1919.

The Nobel Committee based its decision on Obama speeches and policy statements, rather than any concrete accomplishments.

The prize is sure to be seen as a political statement by the Nobel Committee and an implied swipe at the eight years of George W. Bush.

It's an unprecedented honor for a new U.S. president less than 9 months in the job.

The Nobel Committee hails Obama for "extraordinary efforts to strengthen intl diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

SNL: Obama address - The President is giving away t-shirts. (Hat Tip: Steve Berryman... If he had not called it to my attention, I would've never been aware of this skit; ...as I have never been smart enough to understand that SNL is actually funny)

Oh, be sure to read the comments at http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/clips/obama-address/1163263/. The Dems love to dish it out but hate it when the shoe is on the other foot. Don’t ya just love the hypocrisy? The comments are almost as funny as the video, which was so-so at best…

It’s way too funny to see the Dems get their underpants tied in a knot over a show that now has a decades-old reputation of trying to be funny… And actually want to debate the issues on the comment board of an almost funny Saturday Night Live skit…

It’s just so rare that liberal NBC and SNL actually attempted to dare to use President Barack for a humor skit that I decided to post it…
