Whatever happened to the Navy midshipman who gave President Bush a bear hug?

If you want a good example of what a difference community newspapers make, read: VIRGINIA MILITARY NEWS - “Whatever happened to the Navy midshipman who gave President Bush a bear hug? Discipline. Then redemption.” By Brock Vergakis, Staff writer, Nov 21, 2018

“Bobby Rashad Jones couldn't help himself. He was the midshipman with the lowest grade-point average in the Naval Academy Class of 2001 – known as the anchor – and was overwhelmed with joy to receive his commission after spending years on academic probation…

“The former linebacker grabbed Bush's hand, pulled him in and hugged the commander-in-chief. And not just any hug; a bear hug that briefly lifted Bush off the ground as part of what Jones would later describe as an "out-of-body experience." January 13, 2015

KED January 13, 2015 - -I was doing some file maintenance on some old electronic records that I have not revisited since - maybe as far back as 1999.

And I came across this address URL for President George W. Bush, http://www.georgewbush.com/, from December 14, 1999. I tried it – what the heck. And guess what – not only does it still work, but it is a great site for our past president.

It was a link in my files from the days in which I was writing about now-President Bush before he won the presidential election and took office.

I had naturally assumed that it would have either been abandoned many years ago or it would redirect to the George W. Bush Presidential Center, which, by the way, may be found here: http://www.bushcenter.org/

“Decision Points” by President George W. Bush

“Decision Points” by President George W. Bush

November 10, 2010

I picked up a copy of “Decision Points” by President George W. Bush earlier today.  I started reading it right away and I have really appreciated what I have seen so far.

It is highly readable and penned in a rather matter-of-fact straightforward, highly accessible style, if not blunt at times.  He sure is not sugarcoating anything…  I give it a whole-hearted thumbs-up.

A great read by a great American patriot.

Bush ‘Miss Me Yet?’

Billboard NPR Most E-mailed Stories

Your Health
It starts sometime during our 50s and 60s: that belly bulge, those "extra" pounds we just can't seem to shed. Part of it is simply the biology of our bodies. Our muscles literally shrink as we age, and that means more calories turn into fat — and it's a lot harder to exercise it off. But the good news is that working out still helps.

Your Health
Getting fit can seem a daunting task, but increasingly, research is finding that small changes can make a big difference. Something as simple as brisk walking can markedly improve fitness — and lifespan. One key to optimizing your workout is getting your heart rate in the target zone.

Each New Year's, Christmas and birthday seems to come round faster every year. But why is it that we feel time goes by faster as we get older? Scientists dissect one of life's intriguing mysteries.

Mental Health
Researchers have referred to Asperger's as high-functioning autism for years, but it's never been listed officially as a form of autism by the American Psychiatric Association. But an updated edition of a mental health disorder guide now says Asperger's really is a form of autism — and some of those with Asperger's are objecting.

A nonprofit in Chicago is training and hiring people with Asperger's syndrome to test computer software. Aspiritech says this work is a good match for high-functioning autistic people because it leverages their skills such as lack of boredom with repetitive tasks and talent for work precision.

Once asked to write a full story in six words, legend has it that novelist Ernest Hemingway responded: "For Sale: baby shoes, never worn." Text of the upcoming Obama's State of the Union speech

Since everything that Obama says in public is on a teleprompter, we have been able to see in advance his upcoming speech:

"My fellow Americans.

It’s Bush’s fault.

It was always Bush’s fault. It will always be Bush’s fault. Bush, Bush, Bush. His fault, his fault, his fault. Maybe his daddy’s fault too.

It’s Bush’s fault and it’s Bush’s fault. But, my friends, it’s Bush’s fault.

The economy? It’s Bush’s fault. Healthcare? It’s Bush’s fault. The wars? It’s Bush’s fault!

Bush, Bush, Bush!

(applause)

Why is it Bush’s fault? Because it’s Bush’s fault! That’s right! It’s Bush’s fault.

Let’s remember where we were a year ago. It was Bush’s fault. And today, it’s still Bush’s fault.

Let us not forget, it is Bush’s fault!

(applause)

George W. Bush. George W. Bush. Bush, Bush, Bush.

Let me elaborate. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault..

And I won!

(applause)

Furthermore, it’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault.

(applause)

My administration will correct the errors and the policies of the previous administration. Why? It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault.

(applause)

Finally, my friends, it’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault. It’s Bush’s fault.

Let us never forget, it’s Bush’s fault.

Thank you."

Hating over Haiti http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3564

Kevin E. Dayhoff

In a moment that could warm all but the coldest of hearts last Saturday, in the midst of all the despair that is now Haiti, Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton set aside their political differences for a joint appeal to raise money for that earthquake-ravaged country.

This is what our country is all about and it should make all of us proud.

The stories and pictures that have illuminated the disaster are heartbreaking. Hold your breath when you view the photo gallery posted yesterday by The Boston Globe’s “The Big Picture – news stories in photographs,” which may found here:
http://tinyurl.com/yclmayb.

The earthquake which struck 16 miles west of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, which shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, measured 7.0 on the “moment magnitude scale,” and was followed by at least 33 aftershocks.

A CBS/AP news article reported that the “International Federation of the Red Cross estimates that up to three million people” were affected by the powerful earthquake.”

“While earthquakes are not uncommon in the Caribbean island country, the recent Haiti earthquake's intensity surprised experts,” observed the National Geographic Daily News web publication.

“‘It's quite strange’ from a historical perspective, said Julie Detton, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey… The last major earthquake to strike Haiti's side of the island was in 1860.”

Red Cross spokesman “Paul Conneally says the fact that the quake occurred very close to Port-au-Prince was ‘not a good indicator.’ He says Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the northern hemisphere and is ill-prepared to handle a major disaster.”

What should not be strange about the response to the disaster, which has befallen our Caribbean neighbors to the south, is the outpouring of solidarity in relief efforts from all over the world.

One reaffirming news report on television showed Mexican and Israeli search and rescue teams working side-by-side, hand-in-glove, while Jordanians provided security.

“In addition,” observed National Geographic, “the Haiti earthquake was very shallow, being centered just 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) below Earth's surface…”

What was also a surprise and just as heartbreaking, strange and shallow, was the intensity of hate just beneath the surface of the American response from people who have chosen to utilize the horrific disaster to promote an enigmatic ideological agenda.

Media bias: Lap Dogs

Click here for a larger image: http://twitpic.com/m3qv5

October 19, 2009 - The matter in which President George W. Bush replaced eight federal prosecutors and the resulting media firestorm; in spite of the fact that President Bill Clinton once replaced 93 federal prosecutors, and the media barely raised an eyebrow, still sticks in my craw.

Not to be overlooked is the dynamic that several of the prosecutors that President Clinton replaced were actively engaged in investigating Democrats.

Make no mistake about it, if I am not mistaken, the federal prosecutors serve at the pleasure of the president. At least thing is for sure, why was it okay for President Clinton to do it and yet it was so wrong for President Bush to do it…?

Furthermore, the ruling party in the U.S. Congress is still pursuing the matter: see here and here - Conyers May Call Rove, Miers to Testify Publicly About Attorney Firings.

I was e-mailed this cartoon just the other day… Hat Tip: Analog. http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2009/10/australian-cartoons.html It is just a relevant today as it was in 2007.

Related: Why John Conyers, the New York Times and the Washington Post owe me an apology. By KARL ROVE OPINION AUGUST 19, 2009:

“Judiciary Democrats had California Rep. Adam Schiff doggedly ask me about four-year-old phone logs, emails, meetings and conversations. What did the committee discover?

“Judging from the evidence released, it uncovered facts that show that my role in the U.S. attorneys issue was minimal and entirely proper. I did not conceive of the idea of removing certain U.S. attorneys, did not select those to be removed, and did not see the lists of U.S. attorneys Justice was considering to replace. I had no idea who was on the final list until Justice sent it to the White House in November 2006. No fair-minded person can review the thousands of pages of documents and testimony and conclude that I drove the process.”

MRC Alert: Sheehan More Consistent Than Media: She Protests Bush and Obama, Media Only Bush

Tracking Liberal Media Bias Since 1996 Monday August 31, 2009 @ 11:22 AM EDT

1. Sheehan More Consistent Than Media: She Protests Bush and Obama, Media Only Bush On a Sunday evening in August four summers ago the NBC Nightly News devoted its "In Depth" segment to how Cindy Sheehan was "single-handedly bringing the Iraq debate to Mr. Bush’s doorstep" with her protest in Crawford, Texas. But Sunday night this year, after Sheehan departed Martha's Vineyard without earning any network media coverage as President Barack Obama's wrapped up his vacation there, NBC's Ron Allen began a story: "Hours before President Obama's vacation ended, he treated his girls to ice cream and candy - the kind of family time the President said he had in mind for the week on Martha's Vineyard. A chance, friends say, to renew himself." A week ago, a MRC Media Reality Check asked: "Will Nets Note Sheehan's Anti-Obama Protest? Media Embraced Cindy Sheehan's Anti-Bush Push in 2005; ABC Anchor Now Says: 'Enough Already.'" The answer: No.

2. Newsweek's Jonathan Alter: Rush Limbaugh Is the 'Great Blowhard of Our Time' Newsweek columnist and editor Jonathan Alter appeared on Friday’s Hardball and slammed Rush Limbaugh as the "great blowhard of our time." Host Chris Matthews prompted the quote when he discussed how Limbaugh had criticized him on his radio show for calling Barack Obama the "last brother" of the Kennedy clan. Referring to Ted Kennedy's death, Matthews snarled, "What is the matter with these people? Can't they take a week off, Jonathan? Just take a week off. It's a funeral."

3. Totenberg: Kennedy a 'Truly Shakespearean Figure' Redeemed by 'Greatness' In full swoon for the late Senator Ted Kennedy, NPR's Nina Totenberg fondly recalled his "greatness" in doing "enormous things" for "millions and millions." She predicted on the weekly Inside Washington aired Friday night: "I think he'll be remembered as a truly Shakespearean figure: tragic, flawed; who in the end achieved redemption through greatness - both in his personal life and in his professional life, and did enormous things for millions and millions of people."

4. Huff-Po Wonders If Mary Jo Kopechne Would 'Feel It Was Worth It' Writing at the Huffington Post, Discover magazine deputy web editor Melissa Lafsky, who formerly worked on the New York Times's Freakonomics blog, wondered about the drowned Mary Jo Kopechne's reaction to Ted Kennedy's life and career: "Who knows - maybe she'd feel it was worth it."

5. NYT Editor Finds Kennedy's Flaw: He Helped Reagan Win Presidency Appearing on MSNBC’s New York Times Edition on Friday, the paper’s ‘Week in Review’ editor, Sam Tanenhaus, lamented one of Ted Kennedy’s flaws: "There’s a further paradox to this, which is we sometimes forget, I mean, all of the wonderful things being said about this extraordinary figure Edward Kennedy, that he was partly accountable for Ronald Reagan’s ascendency."

6. Andrea Mitchell Gratuitously Drags Up '88 Debate Slam During Quayle Interview MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Friday used an interview with Dan Quayle to gratuitously highlight Lloyd Bentsen's famous 1988 slam, "You're no Jack Kennedy." Although Quayle appeared on "Andrea Mitchell Reports" to share his reflections on the passing of Ted Kennedy, the cable anchor sniped, "One of your toughest moments was during the debate with Lloyd Benson when you compared yourself to John F. Kennedy..."

7. CNN Sees Dangers In Obama's Deficit: 'Taxes That Would Make a Scandinavian Revolt' Amid all of the tributes to Ted Kennedy's lengthy career of expanding the scope of government and its cost to taxpayers, CNN's American Morning on Friday dug up a six-week old op-ed from the Tax Policy Center's Len Burman warning that massive trillion-dollar deficits are a catastrophe that could lead to the end of the U.S. as a great power "or even a mediocre one." Burman: "Taxes would rise to levels that would make a Scandinavian revolt. And the government would not be able to provide anything but the most basic public services....The social safety net would evaporate."

White House says no one "bemoaned" Bush vacations?

White House says no one "bemoaned" Bush vacations?

The Washington Examiner political editor, Chris Stirewalt, notes in a recent article, “White House says no one "bemoaned" Bush vacations?,” in “Beltway Confidential,” that White House Spokesman Bill Burton recently said: “As I recall, the previous president [took] quite a bit of vacation himself, and I don't think anyone bemoaned that…”

Is this another case of double standards, selective memory, or incompetence?

Mr. Burtons remarks are in reference to: “The president is going to add another min-vacation to his August break next week with a a four-day weekend at Camp David. No big deal.

“But the administration, ever sensitive to criticism, had to rationalize the time at the presidential retreat, with Spokesman Bill Burton saying that the vacation week has been newsier than expected considering the death of Sen. Ted Kennedy."

I certainly remember the Democrats complaining - long and loud - about the vacations of President George W. Bush.

I noted a very small amount of the criticism in my recent column, “The Obamas in paradise,” August 26, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff http://tinyurl.com/kt85lo - just enough to make my point, however, the criticism was voluminous, vitriolic, and invective.

Mr. Stirewalt calls to our attention material from Politico; and this:

“At the Daily Kos, even Obama getaways still provoke recriminations for Bush's time in Crawford, Texas and elsewhere -- Obama NYC Date Night Highlights Bush Vacation Record

“As Bush was leaving office, CBS had tired of the standard coverage of how much time Bush had spent in Crawford and raised the question of his use of Camp David, measuring the number of days in eight years that the 43rd president spent in the Catoctin Mountain getaway with: 487 Days At Camp David For Bush

The George W. Bush Presidential Center is advancing the ideals of freedom, opportunity, responsibility and compassion through study of the Bush presidency and ongoing research, discussion and scholarship. The Bush Presidential Center uniquely integrates the records of a Presidential Library and Museum, the intellectual capital of a policy institute and the resources of an independent foundation.

The Bush Presidential Center will be set on the campus of a rising national university, in a major metropolitan city in the heartland of the country. It will be the focal point of George and Laura Bush’s continuing commitment to the ideals that are the touchstone of their public service.

Former President George W. Bush visits with students after speaking to a journalism class on April 29. Earlier in the day, he had lunch with SMU Hunt and President's Scholars.

As the George W. Bush Foundation continues working on plans for the former president's library, museum and institute, located at SMU, some students are already encountering him on campus.

In recent weeks, Bush has spoken to political science and journalism classes at the invitation of professors. SMU President R. Gerald Turner also invited Bush to have lunch with Hunt and President's Scholars, and Bush has held impromptu discussions and signed autographs for students in hallways and on campus. (Read more about his visits on Feb. 24 and April 29.)

"I have always wanted to meet him since he was the governor of Texas and now, thanks to SMU, I have had the opportunity twice this semester," said President's Scholar Jessica Pecena, a senior from Grand Prairie who, along with other student scholars, had lunch with Bush on April 29.

"My favorite part of the luncheon was when he asked what we were planning to do in the future. He seemed genuinely interested in us,” said Pecena, who is majoring in anthropology and psychology.
