More than 500 people crowded into the social hall at the Union Bridge fire station today to pay respects to Staff Sergeant Charles Isaac Cartwright, 26, of Union Bridge, who died Nov. 7 while supporting combat operations in Farah province, Afghanistan.

Cartwright was assigned as a member of Marine Special Operations Company A, serving his fifth overseas tour, three in Iraq and one previously in Afghanistan.

Local University to ban eating ice cream on campus

The policy was announced last Wednesday by university officials as they sipped bottled water and munched on simulated fiber-bars, Manhattan style fish assholes and giant curried water bugs. (Click here for a larger image of the “Red Curry Giant Water Bugs: http://twitpic.com/plzzd )

University officials expressed pride at becoming “Maryland's first four-year college to ban an activity once as commonplace as lounging on the quad,” according to one local newspaper.

The sloth-like “lounging in the quad” is also under consideration to be banned. “We want a healthy – and all-conforming campus, that is obedient and health-conscious,” said officials.

“The reason for the policy, which goes into effect in August, is simple, administrators said: They want to reduce health risks from (eating ice cream) and secondhand exposure to (obese students.”)

"I don't try to guide people in how they live their lives, but I am going to protect the campus so it's clean and pleasant for as many people as possible," said the Local University President, Dr. Knowles Jerry-Ben, known affectionately on campus as “Dr. Kno,” who cited a study by The Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Eating ice cream is decadent, indulgent, and delicious, however, the consumer watchdog group is warning many ice cream treats are “coronaries in cones.” Many top brands contain huge amounts of calories and saturated fats said CSPI.

According to one publication, which reported upon the study, “the researchers were astounded at the calories and saturated fat content in a single cone of many products sold by companies like Baskin-Robbins, Ben & Jerry's and Haagen-Dazs.”

Local University has concurrently announced that all products manufactured by Baskin-Robbins, Ben & Jerry's and Haagen-Dazs are not only banned on campus, but also prohibited within a ten-mile radius of the university campus.

Also, all local rallies and celebrations of National Ice Cream Day, usually held every year on July 15, are also now banned. Defiant demonstrators will be dealt with sternly, warned one official as he manically munched on the cardboard wrapper of a simulated fiber-bar.

When asked to comment on a Frederick News-Post article from 2007 that noted “In 1984, President Reagan designated National Ice Cream Day and declared July to be National Ice Cream Month,” one university official belched that President Ronald Reagan and any reference to the former president or his words or “utterances” is now deemed “hate-speech” and also banned on campus.

The news account had cited that “Reagan recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food enjoyed by 90 percent of the nation's population, according to the website for the International Dairy Foods Association.

One university official reminded the audience that the International Dairy Foods Association – the IDFA - is now on the Obama administration’s terrorist watch list for propagandizing that “The average amount of ice cream consumed in the United States on any given day in July is 5.3 million gallons.”

The inquiring reporter was immediately – and forcibly - removed from the news conference in handcuffs for asking questions considered seditious in tenor and rebellious in nature.

As the reporter, B. P. Ward of the Potomac Publishing Co., was dragged from the room, he shouted, “George Washington spent $200 on ice cream in the summer of 1790 – that’s a lot of money for back then.”

To which several university officials responded that any reference to President Washington is also seditious… and now banned.

Meanwhile, a published account noted that “Everyone knows that ice cream isn’t a health food, acknowledges the U.S.-based food sleuths famed for blowing the whistle on movie theatre popcorn and MSG in Chinese takeout,” which are also already banned from the campus.

The published account on the perils of ice cream noted, “A CSPI study released Wednesday found a regular scoop of premium ice cream provides 250 to 350 calories and half a day's worth of artery clogging saturated fat.

“‘That's twice what you'd get in a supermarket ice cream like Bryers,’ nutritionist Jayne Hurley told a Washington press conference.

“It can get worse. The food police say a large vanilla shake from Baskin-Robbins has more than 1,000 calories and 32 grams of saturated fat. That's like eating three McDonald's Quarter Pounders.”

All McDonald’s products have been banned from the university campus for some time, noted university officials.

“Hurley even had a warning about empty cones.

“‘This empty chocolate dipped waffle cone from Ben & Jerry's is the equivalent to a half pound rack of baby backribs…”

Waffles, baby backribs and all meat are also banned from the campus, university officials said with noticeable pride, while spitting-out giant water bug shells.

Recently ABC News Medical Unit reported that “While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consistently report that meat is the number one cause of foodborne illness, they are not the only foods to be wary of.

“A new report from the Center for Science in the Public Interest found that a number of food poisoning cases are caused by some unexpected foods, including leafy greens, potatoes, and ice cream.”

Local University officials said that a ban on leafy greens and potatoes is also under consideration, which cited that, the “CSPI reported that leafy greens, including spinach, lettuce, and cabbage, were responsible for 363 outbreaks between 1990 and 2006 and caused 13,568 cases of illness.”

Eating hamburgers and all meat products, waffles, ice cream, popcorn, and Chinese food is “already banned in campus buildings at (Local University,) but under the new rules, it will be off-limits on the grounds: on sidewalks, in garages and parking lots, and even outside the bar … at the local bistro.”

Local University “joins a rapidly growing list of U.S. colleges - at least 365, according to the (American Say No to Ice Cream Rights Foundation) - that have banned (eating ice cream) on campus.”

According to a local publication: “Last year, Montgomery College became the first Maryland institution of higher education to take the leap. Harford, Frederick, and Carroll community colleges have followed suit. Pennsylvania's university system has banned (eating ice cream) on all of its campuses.”

Dr. Kno “said a survey found that a very small percentage of students and faculty (eat ice cream) and that those who do, (eat ice cream) less frequently than they did in the past. The policy encountered some opposition from student leaders.”

However, all opposition, dialogue, and discussion of university policies have long been banned on campus, following recent successful attempts at banning any opposition to the Ruling Party, on both the state and national level.

Some students “wondered if the university will be able to enforce the rule, noting that a current ban on (eating ice cream) within 30 feet of school buildings is only loosely followed.”

Directing their attention to the 30-foot rule, university officials deny that students have been beaten for violating the rules; however, a small number of students were imprisoned last year for eating ice cream.

University officials, speaking on the condition of animosity, said, that the arrests and incarcerations will continue until the mood and moral of the campus improves and conformity abounds.

“Students and staff members who violate the rules will face fines and sanctions. Visitors who” eat ice cream “may be barred from future access to the 328-acre campus,” and sent to a fat-farm for re-education…

“Some students said the ban on (ice cream) will improve campus.”

“By not having eating ice cream on campus, kids will stop eating ice cream,” said a senior, “can world peace be too far away as a result?”

Staff Sergeant Charles Isaac Cartwright, 26, of Oceanside, Calif., and formerly of Union Bridge, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 in the Farah province of Afghanistan.

Born March 23, 1983 in Westminster, he was the son of H. Michael and Carol Ann Cartwright of Union Bridge.

He was the husband of Marissa Cartwright, his wife of 11 months.

He was a 2001 graduate of Walkersville High School and joined the U.S. Marine Corps on Sept. 9, 2001 and graduated from Parris Island on Dec. 7, 2001, and the School Of Infantry in January 2002.

Staff Sgt. Cartwright was currently assigned as a member of Marine Special Operations Company A, serving his 5th tour, three previously in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.

On Labor Day weekend this year he was wounded in Afghanistan and received his second purple heart.

He also received the valor award during his third tour in Iraq.

Other decorations awarded to him were Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, two Combat Action Ribbons, Navy Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, two Marine Corps Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, two Iraqi Campaign Medals, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, four Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, NATO Medal and two Certificates of Commendation.

He was a member of Johnsville United Methodist Church; Maryland Demolay, Frederick Chapter, where he had achieved the Chevalier status; and the VFW Post 8806, Union Bridge.

Charlie enjoyed running, having run the Orange County marathon, as well as having competed in a triathlon.

He also enjoyed wrestling, surfing, walking with his wife and their blue tick coon dog, Waylon, on the beach, cooking and having friends over for dinner parties.

Surviving, in addition to his wife and parents, are sister, Rebecca Ann Cartwright of Russell Spring, KY; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ralph G. Eyler Sr. of Prince Frederick; uncles, Ralph G. Eyler Jr. and wife Judy of Salida, Colo. and Philip P. Cartwright and wife Cyndy of Lexington Park; and four cousins, Catherine Moir and husband Kenneth and children Samantha and Luke, Kenneth Eyler and wife Maria and children Anthony and Olivia, Suzanne Cartwright-Fiol and husband Frank and son Sebastian and Lauren M. Cartwright.

A funeral service will be held Monday, Nov. 16 at 11:00 a.m. at the Union Bridge Fireman’s Building, 8 W. Locust St., Union Bridge. Rev. Ernest Thayle, his pastor, and Rev. Richard Michael, pastor of St. James Lutheran Church, Union Bridge, will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Johnsville United Methodist Church, 11106 Green Valley Rd., Union Bridge, Sunday, Nov. 15 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

The flag flies proud in the gray cold rainy weather at the National Memorial Arch in Valley Forge National Historical Park.

According to the National Park Service, “The United States Memorial Arch, located at the intersection of Outerline Drive and Gulph Road, was erected to commemorate the arrival of General George Washington and his Continental Army into Valley Forge.”

Construction began on the arch in 1914 and it was dedicated on June 19, 1917.

FOUR INJURED IN MULTI-VEHICLE CRASH ON I-795

(Reisterstown, MD) – Four people were injured this morning in a six-vehicle crash on I-795 that occurred when a northbound vehicle crossed the median and struck five southbound vehicles.

The driver of the northbound 1999 Lexus 300 is identified as Antonio Martinez, 44, of Owings Mills, Md. Martinez was transported by ambulance to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he is currently in stable condition.

The driver of the first southbound vehicle is identified as Douglas A. Rill, 55, of Upperco, Md. He was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu and refused treatment at the scene.

The second southbound vehicle was a 1999 Ford F-350 pickup, operated by John Adams, Jr., 49, of Reisterstown, Md. Adams was transported by ambulance to Sinai Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The third southbound vehicle involved was a 2005 Chrysler 300, driven by Damon E. Secoski, 33, of Hanover, Pa. Secoski refused treatment at the scene.

The driver of the fourth southbound vehicle was Amanda B. Goodacre, 27, of Westminster. She was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry and was transported by ambulance to the Carroll Hospital Center with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the fifth southbound vehicle is identified as Maryland State Police Crime Scene Technician Danielle M. Goodnow, 26, who is assigned to the Forensic Sciences Division. She was driving a 2002 Chevrolet van, owned by the State Police and used as a crime lab vehicle.

Troopers from the Golden Ring Barracks were dispatched to southbound I-795 about one-half mile south of the Rt. 140 split shortly after 9:00 a.m. today. Troopers from the Maryland State Police CRASH Team also responded and are assisting with the investigation.

The preliminary investigation indicates that for unknown reasons, the northbound vehicle driven by Martinez crossed the grass median of I-795 and traveled into the southbound lanes. Martinez’s vehicle first struck Rill’s vehicle head-on, then began spinning and successively struck the four other vehicles before coming to rest in the median.

Due to the number of vehicles involved and the size of the crash scene, State Police had to close southbound I-795 for about two hours. Baltimore County Police and State Highway Administration personnel assisted with the road closures and detours. One lane of traffic was able to get by the scene by about 11:00 a.m. and the entire roadway was reopened shortly after noon.

Charges have not been placed at this time. No causes of the crash have been ruled out. Upon completion of their investigation, Maryland State Police investigators will present their findings to the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office for review and consultation regarding charges. The investigation is continuing.

Gov. Ritchie Re-Elected by 41,000 -- Only Executive to Serve Successive Terms--All State Candidates Win. Democrats Elect Nine Local Candidates in Carroll.—

Governor Ritchie lost Carroll County by 1657 on Tuesday. Four years ago he was defeated by less than 500.

Holland pulled through by only 14 over Gordy, Robinson lost to Coleman by only 19, Young carried the county over Brewer by 4.

Judge Thomas beats Brooks by 1799, the highest lead over any opponent in the county.

"Bill" Phillips carries the county over "Bill" Bowers by 546.

Samuel J. Stone is improving as he runs. He beat Kephart by 962.

State's Attorney Brown was re-elected by 225 over Walsh.

Daniel J. Hesson defeated Walter R. Rudy by 546 for State Senator.

The house of Delegates will be three Democrats—C. Scott Bollinger, John T. Yingling and Francis Earl Shriner, and one Republican, Melvin W. Routson.

The Judges of the Orphans' Court will be Thomas J. Haines, Democrat; J. Webster Ebaugh and William E. Green, Republicans.

William A. Roop, who ran for re-election for County Commissioner was defeated by John W. Reaver by 238.

John J. Johns is surveyor by defeating John D. Roop, Jr., by 663.

Miss Mary Janet Miller, Socialist, received 55 votes in the county. She ran ahead of any Socialist or Labor candidate for State offices.

Union Bridge MD Marine killed in Afghanistan

It was sometime on Monday, November 9, 2009 that I learned that “Sgt. Charles I. Cartwright, 26, of Union Bridge, Md., died Nov. 7 while supporting combat operations in Farah province, Afghanistan.

Sadly, his death has just today been confirmed in a DoD news release:

“He was assigned to 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, Camp Pendleton, Calif,” according to a U.S. Department of Defense news release - http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=13115

The news had spread through the Carroll County Maryland firefighting community because Sgt. Cartwright is the son of Mike Cartwright, the Union Bridge Volunteer Fire Co. assistant chief.

At the time this is written, it is believed that Sgt. Cartwright, a highly decorated Marine, was on his fourth tour in the Middle East.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the family. We are grateful for his service to our country and saddened by his loss.

“The death of Russian literature has been declared many times. Russian poetry was supposed to have perished tragically early, interred with the body of Alexander Pushkin in 1837 following his fateful duel. Then along came Anna Akhmatova, Boris Pasternak, Osip Mandelstam and Marina Tsvetaeva, an astonishing quartet of poets who revived and reinvented the genre in an explosion of creativity in the early 20th century.

“Epic Russian novels, meanwhile, were pronounced dead after Fyodor Dostoevsky and Leo Tolstoy. But in describing the brutalities of the second world war and the gulag, Vasily Grossman and Alexander Solzhenitsyn proved worthy heirs of those 19th-century masters.

“Once again it has become fashionable to argue that Russian fiction is over, buried under the rubble of the former Soviet Union. Critics have decreed that no classic works of Russian literature have emerged in the past 18 years.
