NewsMax: Candidate Obama Slammed Offshore Oil Drilling
Many are so surprised to learn that Newsmax is reporting, "Candidate Obama Slammed Offshore Oil Drilling"
Shocked, I tell ya:
Click here to view this and other stories as a web page |
President Barack Obama’s decision to lift the ban on offshore oil drilling along parts of the U.S. coastline marks a sharp turnaround from the position he took during his presidential campaign.
In a statement issued on June 17, 2008, Obama attacked his Republican opponent John McCain for his call to open the nation’s coastline for oil exploration and drilling. He also charged that McCain had flip-flopped on his support of a moratorium on drilling he expressed in 2000.
"John McCain's support of the moratorium on offshore drilling during his first presidential campaign was certainly laudable, but his decision to completely change his position and tell a group of Houston oil executives exactly what they wanted to hear today was the same Washington politics that has prevented us from achieving energy independence for decades," Obama said.
"It's another example of short-term political posturing from Washington, not the long-term leadership we need to solve our dependence on oil.”
Obama also said offshore drilling would not produce any oil for at least a decade, and the effect on gasoline prices would be negligible.
Three days later, Obama said during a campaign stop in Jacksonville, Fla., according to the St. Petersburg Times: “The politics may have changed, but the facts haven’t. Offshore drilling would not lower gas prices today. It would not lower gas prices tomorrow. It would not lower gas prices this year. It would not lower gas prices five years from now.”
Nevertheless, on Wednesday Obama announced a five-year plan that includes opening up waters along portions of the U.S. mainland and Alaska for oil exploration.
“Given our energy needs, in order to sustain economic growth and produce jobs, and keep our businesses competitive, we are going to need to harness traditional sources of fuel even as we ramp up production of new sources of renewable, homegrown energy,” he said.
“So today we’re announcing the expansion of offshore oil and gas exploration.”

What’s good for the goose should be good for the gander - except when the issue is Democrat politics in Maryland.
When Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr., was Governor, Democrats in Annapolis created an “ethical smear” on the Administration because members of the Board of Regents of the University of Maryland System were also involved in political activities during their private lives. Nothing illegal was done - but with much uproar and election-year grandstanding, the Democrat legislators passed a bill prohibiting regents from engaging in political fundraising.
Entering the 2010 legislative session, however, the University of Maryland System was facing the potential for severe cuts as the O’Malley Administration was formulating its higher education budget. Conveniently, two members of the Board of Regents served as hosts for a major fundraiser sponsored by the O’Malley/Brown campaign.
Regent Chairman Clifford M. Kendall and Assistant Treasurer Barry P. Gossett are the key names on the list of a 19-person host committee printed in the invitation for the November 3, 2009, fundraiser. They solicit contributions of $1000 per individual and $4000 per sponsor for the O’Malley/Brown campaign. The flyer is a direct violation of the law passed by the Democrats in 2006.
Delegate Frank S. Turner (D-Howard) told the Washington Post in 2006: “We need to clean up this board, and dealing with fundraising is a piece of that . . . These people should be out fundraising for need-based scholarships, for athletic scholarships.” (Washington Post, “Momentum Builds for Regents Bill,” March 23, 2006)
Harsh criticism was also delivered by Douglas M. Duncan, Montgomery County Executive at the time, in the Washington Post article. He asked whether a potential contributor would know in what capacity a regent was acting: “We expect our regents to be focused on higher education, not hitting people up for political money.”
Today, not only are the regents confusing potential contributors about what “hat” they are wearing when fundraising, but so is the Chief of Staff of the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs. As reported at MarylandReporter.com, Gerard “Jerry” Boden was transferred from Lt. Governor Anthony Brown’s staff to a high-paying position created for him at Veterans Affairs.
However, he also serves as the treasurer of Brown’s official campaign finance account. Won’t contributors be confused by which role Boden is representing when fundraising? Shouldn’t Boden be focused on the issues of Maryland’s veterans and “not hitting people up for political money”?
Just another example of how, in Maryland, the Democrats play by a different set of rules for ethical standards in state government.

A retiring Senator not facing re-election stood up last week for principle, insisting new federal spending be covered by a matching reduction elsewhere, but instead of hailing Senator Jim Bunning as a “maverick” making sure the ruling party adheres to its promise new spending will be “paid for,” television network journalists on Monday night painted him as an ogre, focusing on the presumed victims of delayed spending. Teasing World News, ABC anchor Diane Sawyer stressed how he’s “denying” people unemployment benefits so ABC decided to “confront” him. Reporter Jon Karl concentrated on victims as he played video of himself confronting Bunning by an elevator: “We wanted to ask the Senator why he is blocking a vote that would extend unemployment benefits to more than 340,000 Americas, including Brenda Wood, a teacher in Austin, Texas who has been out of work for two years.” That’s not all: “Bunning is also blocking money for highway construction. So across the country today, 41 construction projects ground to a halt, thousands of workers furloughed without pay.”
Former Democratic aide turned journalist George Stephanopoulos interviewed current Democratic operative James Carville on Monday's Good Morning America. The two good friends agreed that Democrats simply have to pass a health care bill. Stephanopoulos wondered, "Do the Democrats really have a choice here?"
These must be really desperate times for the Democrats, if the syndicated Chris Matthews Show that was aired over the weekend is any indication, as both the host and one of the guests claimed Barack Obama would need to tap into military, musical and even mystical powers to get a health care reform bill passed. During the intro of his show, Matthews declared that Obama "must now lead the band with all the music and magic he has in him" and guest panelist Michael Duffy, of Time magazine, reported that Obama is going to unleash "the infantry, the air cover, the artillery" on Congress to get health care passed.
On Monday's CBS Early Show, White House correspondent Bill Plante reported on the possibility of Democrats using reconciliation to pass a health care reform bill and noted how Republicans used the procedure when they were in the majority: "In the past it has helped the majority party push through some controversial legislation. In 2001, Republicans used it to pass a giant $1.3 trillion tax cut." Meanwhile, Plante did not use the "giant" label to describe the massive ObamaCare legislation, simply referring to it as a "sweeping proposal." According to a Heritage Foundation study by James C. Capretta, the total cost of the bill could add up to $2.5 trillion over ten years.
In a segment on the banking industry on CBS's Sunday Morning, fill-in anchor Anthony Mason cited the movie "It's A Wonderful Life" and wondered: "Who would you say is today's equivalent of the movie's villain, the dastardly Mister Potter?" His answer: "If you ask the Huffington Post's web mistress Arianna Huffington, it's these guys." Footage rolled of big bank CEOs. At no point in the segment did Mason refer to Huffington as liberal or point out the government's role in creating the financial crisis.

The rare dueling sit-downs – Biden on NBC and CBS, Cheney on ABC – broke little new ground, but amounted to a point-by-point defense of each vice president’s view of the war on terrorism, and a recitation of how the other side has screwed it up.
Biden said Cheney “doesn’t listen” and has not given President Obama credit for killing dozens of al Qaeda leaders and associates in what he characterized as a more aggressive fight against terrorism than was waged under the Bush administration.
Cheney shot back that Obama has a dangerously passive, pre-9/11 approach to national security that views terrorism as a mere crime, not a strategic threat against the United States.
“It’s the mindset that concerns me,” Cheney said in an interview on ABC’s “This Week.”
The vice presidents differed on the handling of terrorism suspects, the closing of Guantanamo Bay and on the use of enhanced interrogation techniques, such as waterboarding, with Cheney saying the president must have all those tools at his disposal to get information from suspected terrorists and Biden saying flatly that waterboarding is not effective and should not be used in any circumstances.
Cheney did agree with the Obama administration on two points. He echoed his fellow Republicans by expressing support for the surge in Afghanistan, but broke with some members of the GOP, including Sen. John McCain of Arizona, in supporting the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
Cheney, who served as defense secretary under President George H.W. Bush, said that while 20 years ago the military was a strong advocate of the policy that bans gays from openly serving in the military, “things have changed significantly since then.”
“When the [Joint] Chiefs [of Staff] come forward and say, ‘We think we can do it,’ then that strikes me that it’s time to reconsider the policy,” Cheney said.
Biden had one advantage in the Sunday showdown – he got the last word. In addition to releasing a transcript of his pre-taped interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” before Cheney appeared on “This Week,” Biden was able to respond directly to ABC interview minutes after it ended by going live on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

MRC Alert: NBC's Today Frets: Will Democrats Lose 'Ted Kennedy's Seat?'
CyberAlert for Monday January 18, 2010 @ 10:18 AM ET
Tracking Liberal Media Bias Since 1996
Monday January 18, 2010 @ 10:18 AM ET
With Massachusetts State Senator Scott Brown surging in the polls, NBC's Today show, on Friday, assigned Kelly O'Donnell to highlight the race for the open Senate seat in Massachusetts pitting Brown against Martha Coakley and the NBC reporter – even after airing Brown's zinger that "it's not the Kennedy seat...it's the people's seat," – ordained it "the Kennedy seat."
On Saturday's Today, co-anchor Amy Robach referred to a potential Republican victory in the Massachusetts Senate race as "a crisis potentially looming here at home" for President Obama. Guest Joe Scarborough told Robach: "Believe it or not, health care reform more unpopular up there [in Massachusetts] than popular."
Perhaps providing a window into the mind of journalists, MSNBC's Savannah Guthrie on Friday appeared shocked that a Democrat might lose in next week’s Massachusetts Senate election. "This is bad," fretted the Daily Rundown co-host.
An ad for a new Chris Matthews special featured the MSNBC host complaining about tea party protesters who are "threatened" by an African American President. As pictures of protests appeared onscreen, Matthews derided, "For the first time, we have an African American head of state. But, there’s always going to be people who challenge it, who are threatened by it."
On Sunday's Meet the Press, Mark Halperin of Time and formerly with ABC News, hailed President Barack Obama: "He's done, I think, an extraordinary job running the government...under difficult circumstances. He managed the economic crisis and kept the world from going into a depression..." The co-author of the new book, 'Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime,' however, didn't see everything as rosy: "The problem has been is he's not inspired the country to feel a sense of optimism and renewal and to be unified in a bipartisan way." During the same roundtable, the Washington Post’s Bob Woodward rejected the notion Obama is any kind of a "European socialist."
On Sunday's Today, co-anchor Jenna Wolfe targeted the state of the economy and Republican opposition -- not the substance of President Obama's policies -- for his drop in popularity. Wolfe lectured Republican Andy Card: "Yes, the economy accounts for much of that drop. How much of it can be linked to unified opposition from Republicans for initiatives like health care?"
Far-left actor Danny Glover, during an online interview this week, proposed global warming caused the devastating earthquake in Haiti. FNC caught up with the silliness Friday night, as Jim Angle led the “Grapevine” segment: "Actor Danny Glover says the earthquake in Haiti is a result of global warming. Glover told GRITtv that it could have happened to any of the Caribbean island nations, quote: 'They are all in peril because of global warming.' Then, he lamented the failure of the climate summit in Copenhagen. As a result of that failure, he says, 'this is what happens.'”
A new survey from Scott Rasmussen finds that more than half of all voters (51%) believe "the average reporter is more liberal than they are," and two-thirds (67%) think the media have "too much power and influence over government decisions." Rasmussen also found strong belief in political bias: "72% say most reporters try to help the candidate they want to win."
On Friday’s CBS Early Show, People magazine editor Betsy Gleick discussed the latest issue, featuring an interview with Barack and Michelle Obama on their one-year anniversary in the White House, declaring: “I think the headline is that they are feeling optimistic that the country is back on track, and that they do feel that there are still some, obviously, huge challenges ahead.” She later remarked: "I mean, one of the most touching parts of the interview is that he just talked about the loneliness of the job....he misses being out among regular people.”

The Marine, Republican, Harley Biker and the reporter
2009 and media bias – another year of newspaper casualties: I received this from several colleagues in an e-mail… And yes, before you reach for the flame-on fingers on the keyboard, this is my chosen profession… That said, this story just about sums-up to what end much of the media has evolved. Read it and laugh – then weep:
A Harley biker is riding by the zoo in Washington, DC when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion's cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents.
The biker jumps off his Harley, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch.
Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly. A reporter has watched the whole event.
The reporter addressing the Harley rider says, 'Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I've seen a man do in my whole life.'
The Harley rider replies, 'Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger and acted as I felt right.'
The reporter says, 'Well, I'll make sure this won't go unnoticed. I'm a journalist, you know, and tomorrow's paper will have this story on the front page... So, what do you do for a living and what political affiliation do you have?'
The biker replies, 'I'm a U.S. Marine and a Republican.’ The journalist leaves.
The following morning the biker buys the paper to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on the front page:
U.S. MARINE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH
That pretty much sums up the media's approach to the news these days.

The many faces of Bill Moyers
November 23, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff
It’s a great day in American, “Bill Moyers is leaving weekly television.”
“Mr. Moyers said he had been planning for some time to retire the program on Dec. 25, but was asked by PBS to raise the funds to continue through April, which he did,” writes Ms. Jensen.
The “program” to which she is referring is “Bill Moyers Journal,” which began in April 2007. It is a weekly no-holds-barred advocacy program on the Public Broadcasting System for the liberal agenda in America.
According to Ms. Jensen, Mr. Moyers said, that his program has recently been having a “good run of it … so I feel it’s time.” He said he was not quitting television work, although he has no new projects planned.
No word as to whether or not he will be taking a position in the administration of Venezuelan President Hug Chavez, although Mr. Moyers is well qualified to work with heads of state.
Our younger readers may not be aware that Mr. Moyers, who was born on June 5, 1934, first distinguished himself on the national stage as the White House press secretary for President Lyndon Baines Johnson from 1965 to 1967.
Mr. Moyers and President Johnson shared a long history of working together. Mr. Moyers had interned for then-Senator Johnson. In addition to several positions as a print media journalist for several newspapers in Texas, he also worked in the mid-1950s at KTBC radio and television stations, which were owned by Lady Bird Johnson.
It is ironic to note that Mr. Moyers is an ordained minister; when one considers the course, blunt, if not profane behavior that historians have characterized President Johnson’s rise and maintenance of power.
Mr. Moyers first came to Washington to work in the administration of President Kennedy in various capacities in the newly formed Peace Corps.
In an April 3, 1966 article in the New York Times by Patrick Anderson, “No. 2 Texan in the White House,” Mr. Moyers explained his relationship with President Johnson as “I work for him despite his faults and he lets me work for him despite my deficiencies.”
His quote from 1966 may have been the only hint at humanity he may have ever had in a career that has witnessed him, in his later years, become unbearably preachy, condescending, boorish, and blinded by his politically ideology, which has tarnished his conflicted and complicated legacy.
For every mean-spirited thing I have to say about Mr. Moyers, I have a half-dozen much nastier remarks for which I was held back by my shriveled but nevertheless functional sense of decency.
In a much-touted dust-up between Mr. Moyers and Fox News Channel personality, Bill O’Reilly in April 2007; Mr. O’Reilly may have said it best:
“I do know that Moyers has, for years, been heavily involved with people like George Soros and the far left. Yet PBS is paying him to produce documentaries that are purported to be "objective." Bill Moyers is not objective, has a problem with the truth, and should no longer be receiving taxpayer money. And that is the truth.”
This after Fox News aired a tape in which Mr. Moyers said: “The FOX News, the talk radio, The Weekly Standard have not only mongered for war along with the administration, not only embraced the administration's policies because they were "conservative", including going to war, but also mounted a slime machine to discredit any journalist who dared to stand against the official view of reality.”
Of course, since President Obama has taken office and has continued the war efforts, for which Mr. Moyers was so critical during the Bush Administration years – now Mr. Moyers seems to have forgotten that we remain at war.
This, in spite of campaign promises from President Obama that once in office, he would withdrawal American troops out of Iraq quickly and re-invent our efforts in Afghanistan.
Funny how that works.
On March 9, 2009, Bernie Goldberg said in an interview with Mr. O’Reilly about Mr. Goldberg’s book, “A Slobbering Love Affair,” that Mr. Moyers is among the top five “five worst offenders in the mainstream media.”
“No. 4 is Bill Moyers because he represents the most elite wing of the most liberal elite media. Bill Moyers is a true believer who these days is posing as a journalist. He's very civil and highbrow to an extent, but also despises conservatives.
“During the Bush administration, he said that the right-wing wrecking crews in government, right-wing wrecking crews were deliberately, intentionally, trying to destroy the United States of America. Really, Bill? I mean, right wing wrecking crews and the government are deliberately trying to destroy America? And he's on PBS.”
Fortunately for America, Mr. Moyers days on PBS are numbered.
Good riddance. Don’t let the door hit you on the behind as you are leaving.
Perhaps the only thing that might be as equally good for American would be if Katie Couric would also retire. We can only wish.

Merry Christmas weeks early Bill Moyers Retiring From Weekly Television
November 21, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff
Merry Christmas weeks early. It’s a great day in American, “Bill Moyers is leaving weekly television.”
One of the best things about him leaving television is that his departure is scheduled to take place in just a few weeks. Yes, that’s right, Mr. Moyers, the hypocritical smug Prince of thug-journalism who raised concepts such as situational ethics and moral relativism to a high art form, will be leaving public television this Christmas.
Merry Christmas America. His last day ought to be declared a national day of celebration.
I guess with a Democratic administration in power; there is no need for him to continue leach off of taxpayer dollars and bash the Republicans and act-out on Bush Derangement Syndrome on the so-called politically-neutral Public Broadcasting System.
According to a Huffington Post news brief, “The New York Times' Elizabeth Jensen reports that the PBS newscaster is retiring from his Friday night program, ‘Bill Moyers Journal,’ on April 30, 2010. ‘Bill Moyers Journal’ launched in April 2007.”
And what journey onto hell his “Journal” was.
"I am 75 years old," Moyers told Jensen. "I feel it's time."
It’s really about time. It was “time” before he even began the program.
Good riddance. Don’t let the door hit you on the ass as you are leaving.

Not to be overlooked is the dynamic that several of the prosecutors that President Clinton replaced were actively engaged in investigating Democrats.
Make no mistake about it, if I am not mistaken, the federal prosecutors serve at the pleasure of the president. At least thing is for sure, why was it okay for President Clinton to do it and yet it was so wrong for President Bush to do it…?

Cleland: I Cried Uncontrollably by Henneberger
Senator Cleland’s re-election loss in 2002 is the stuff of revisionist history. The “famed ad” ran one time and was pulled. His service and sacrifice in Vietnam is to be admired. I keep him in my prayers for his courageous battle against depression.
However, his senatorial representation for his constituents in Georgia was nuanced and flawed. He lost for good reasons for which he has never taken personal responsibility.
And his vile diatribes about folks in the Bush administration is not the sophist stuff or commentary that earns one respect.
Read: December 21, 2005 Who is Max Cleland? Kevin E. Dayhoff http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=1395 And trust me, for every mean thing I wrote, a half-dozen much nastier remarks were held back by my shriveled but nevertheless functional sense of decency.

Max Cleland: 'I Cried Uncontrollably for 2 1/2 Years' Posted: on Politics Daily 10/6/09 by Melinda Henneberger

In a phone interview on Monday, former Georgia Sen. Max Cleland was upbeat – "What's goin' on, kid?'' – and quick to laugh. But after losing his U.S. Senate seat to an opponent who ran post-9/11 TV ads that showed the decorated Vietnam vet alongside Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, Cleland fell into a depression he was afraid he might not pull out of. It was public service, he says, that had given his life shape and meaning after he left three limbs on a battlefield in Khe Sanh. But without that role, the old darkness came back. Along with his job and his bearings, he lost his relationship with his fiancée. "That's emotionally and physically over,'' he told me. "That's gone.'' And for a time, he was once again a patient at Walter Reed, where he'd first been put back together nearly four decades earlier – and was now surrounded by vets from Iraq and Afghanistan: "I cried uncontrollably for 2 ½ years.''

Oh, be sure to read the comments – they are particular vile.

Karl Rove and the Spitballers
Chris Cavey
Last week Karl Rove spoke at the Goucher College “President’s Forum “series. Mr. Rove and Goucher President Sanford J. Unger took the stage in front of an audience of over 500. The evening was a learning experience for the liberal student body; however, for me, it was just vintage Karl Rove.

Healthcare:
Chip away at the items one by one. Stop forcing insurance companies to have mandated coverage outside normal everyday items. IVF (In vitro fertilization) is one example. Do a basic coverage; with wellness visits and then, if you must, do an a-la-carte menu for the rest.

Big Media Missing the Point
Kevin E. Dayhoff
Everyone who bickers about the size of the crowd in Washington on September 12, or what network covered it and what media did not cover it, or whether the protest was the work of conservatives or un-American racists is sorely missing the significance of the entire event.

Kuching, Malaysia – Illegal logging and poor forest practices are two separate things” and “if there is one thing I hope could be improved over time it would be the quality of data that everyone could share” are the words of wisdom spouted by one Alberto Goetzl. Mr. Goetzl, a policy bureaucrat wonk from Poolesville, Maryland has been sharing these brilliant insights to the people of Malaysia through a program sponsored by the U.S. State Department.

Let the Games Begin
Roy Meachum
After Frederick City primaries last week, Republican friends insisted on talking about how Democratic winner Jason Judd’s chances were doomed in November, saying the Democratic winner would get his butt whipped when everybody could vote. There was also comment along the line his working for a union makes him anathema to local citizens.

Jennifer’s Last Hurrah
Roy Meachum
Jennifer Dougherty’s defeat Tuesday resulted not from a single cause but a number of political crimes, all of them self-inflicted. One by one, she managed to offend her fellow Democrats – from Ron Young to Andrew Duck and all the faithful in between. All by herself, she managed to make seeking office tediously boring; primarily because of the way she inevitably lost – time after-time.
Why the low turnout?

Why the low turnout in the City of Frederick elections? There are numerous reasons, so here are a few as I see it.

Happenstance Happens…

A year ago or so, there was an ugly accident on a double-decker shuttle bus that serviced Washington Nationals’ games. A couple of young male passengers were killed when the bus ran under an overpass, prompting speculation about whether the passengers had stood up on the bus at the wrong moment, thus putting themselves in harm's way.
