“The Great Arctic Outbreak: The Blizzard of 1899"

The Great Arctic Outbreak: The Blizzard of 1899,"

The defunct Democratic Advocate published an article about the storm on Feb. 18, 1899: "Heavy Snow Storm -- Railroads and Public Roads Blockaded -- Westminster Cut Off from Outside Communication -- Deepest Snow for Many Years."

DAYHOFF: In the 1800s, residents endured a real storm of the century http://tinyurl.com/ycw27sr #history #writing

http://www.explorecarroll.com/ EAGLE ARCHIVE By Kevin Dayhoff Posted http://www.explorecarroll.com/community/4006/dayhoff/ 2/28/10

Everyone has a story of driving a car in the middle of a snowstorm, but can you imagine attempting to negotiate the snow in horse and buggy days?

"The first round occurred on Feb. 5 through (Feb.) 8 with over 1 foot of accumulation."

The second wallop happened when "a ferocious four-day storm that began on Saturday, Feb. 11 and continued through Tuesday morning, Feb. 14. ...

"Approximately 25 inches of snow fell on top of the prior foot of snow in the 1899 storm to reach a total accumulation of over 3 feet. The blustery northwest wind pushed the snow into drifts of 8 to 12 feet," according to both local historian Joe Getty and the newspaper account.

To add to the misery, temperatures were in the record-setting sub-zero range; from 12 below zero on Feb. 9; then 20 below zero on Feb. 10, and "from 14 to 27 below" zero on Feb. 11.

The photograph is from the family papers of Caroline Babylon and Kevin Dayhoff ©. Depicted is a scene from the February 14, 1899 blizzard. The view is of Main Street, looking west over the railroad tracks at the intersection of Main Street and Liberty Street. Oral history indicates that the individuals in the photo include family member Frank Thomas Babylon. [18990214 Main St during Blizzardc]

Bush ‘Miss Me Yet?’

Billboard NPR Most E-mailed Stories

The Two-Way
There is a billboard along I-35 near Wyoming, Minn., with a huge photo of former president George W. Bush and this question: "Miss Me Yet?" Now, the push is on to find out who paid to have it put up.

Your Health
It starts sometime during our 50s and 60s: that belly bulge, those "extra" pounds we just can't seem to shed. Part of it is simply the biology of our bodies. Our muscles literally shrink as we age, and that means more calories turn into fat — and it's a lot harder to exercise it off. But the good news is that working out still helps.

Your Health
Getting fit can seem a daunting task, but increasingly, research is finding that small changes can make a big difference. Something as simple as brisk walking can markedly improve fitness — and lifespan. One key to optimizing your workout is getting your heart rate in the target zone.

Krulwich On Science
Each New Year's, Christmas and birthday seems to come round faster every year. But why is it that we feel time goes by faster as we get older? Scientists dissect one of life's intriguing mysteries.

Mental Health
Researchers have referred to Asperger's as high-functioning autism for years, but it's never been listed officially as a form of autism by the American Psychiatric Association. But an updated edition of a mental health disorder guide now says Asperger's really is a form of autism — and some of those with Asperger's are objecting.
Business
A nonprofit in Chicago is training and hiring people with Asperger's syndrome to test computer software. Aspiritech says this work is a good match for high-functioning autistic people because it leverages their skills such as lack of boredom with repetitive tasks and talent for work precision.

Non-Fiction
Once asked to write a full story in six words, legend has it that novelist Ernest Hemingway responded: "For Sale: baby shoes, never worn." In this spirit, Smith Magazine invited writers "famous and obscure" to distill their own life stories into a single sentence. It All Changed in an Instant is the fourth collection of six-word memoirs from the magazine.

Lyrics by: Carly Simon Music by: Carly Simon http://www.carlysimon.com/music/Lyrics/You%27re_So_Vain.html

You walked into the party
Like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror
As you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed
That they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner, and....

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

You had me several years ago
When I was still quite naïve
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave

But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me
I had some dreams
They were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee and....

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

Well I hear you went up to Saratoga
And your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun

Well, you're where you should be all of the time
And when you're not you're with
Some underworld spy
Or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and....

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

Clear-eyed girl
In a crooked way
All the crooked walkin
To avoid and evade
Hair like maple, skin like cream
Bet they say I love you
When you strip them thin

Chorus:
Baby, you're so vague
That you probably think this song ain't about you

Green eyed boys
Lick the razor blade
Girl I think I love you
And the mess you made
Setting you up
It don't get you down
When you flash your fangs
You own this town

Chorus:
Baby, you're so vague
That you probably think this song ain't about you

DAYHOFF: In the 1800s, residents endured a real storm of the century

Everyone has a story of driving a car in the middle of a snowstorm, but can you imagine attempting to negotiate the snow in horse and buggy days?

On Feb. 15, 1896, the now out-of-print Westminster newspaper, American Sentinel, carried a snow-related horror story involving "Thomas Martin, who was hauling grain to this place and was returning home, stopped at the post office for his mail, leaving his team standing.

"He was talking to some person when some snow fell from the roof of Mr. T. H. Eckenrode's house, frightening the horses. ...

"He endeavored to check them, but the rein ... broke, throwing him under the wheels of the wagon, which passed over his body, breaking three of his ribs and puncturing one of his lungs."

Of course, this was in the days long before the local volunteer fire departments provided emergency medical services.

"Mr. Martin was at once taken into the drug store of Mr. John McKellip…

Carroll County Baseball history

I say with a sigh,
With the snow piled so high,
It's time to write about anything I know,
Other than the snow and the cold.
If I may be so bold.

So let's talk about baseball? I'm happy to report that this past Wednesday, the Baltimore Orioles pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in Sarasota, Fla.

Carroll County has always had a love affair with baseball. Some of my best memories of growing up in Carroll came from listening to Orioles baseball on WTTR or getting together with friends and family to attend Little League or Babe Ruth games. Baseball has been a favorite topic for many local history writers. And why not? Writing about baseball is fun.

IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 26, 2010

On Monday, March 1, 2010, as part of an on-going comprehensive traffic safety initiative, the Westminster Police Department will activate red light cameras at two intersections within the City.

Red light cameras have been installed to monitor violations on eastbound and westbound MD Route 140 at Malcolm Drive (including the dual left turn lanes) as well as southbound MD Route 97 at Nursery Round (including the left turn lane). The cameras will monitor traffic twenty four hours a day.

Based on extensive research, these two intersections were approved by the Maryland State Highway Administration for the installation of cameras due to a high number of red light running violations as well as crashes that were the result of red light running.

Starting on March 1, 2010 and continuing through March 14, 2010, violators who are detected running red lights at either of these locations will receive a warning notice. Individuals who receive a warning notice during this period will not be subject to a fine or any other penalty, but simply reminded via the warning notice to correct the driving behavior that resulted in their running the red light. Beginning on March 15, 2010, violators will receive citations.

Consistent with Maryland law governing the use of red light cameras, violations are considered a civil infraction and carry a seventy five dollar fine. Citations are sent to the registered owner of the vehicle involved and the registered owner can either pay the fine or stand trial in District Court. Upon paying the fine or a conviction in court, the registered owner will not receive points on their driver’s license and their insurance company cannot raise their rates.

Red light cameras have been utilized in Maryland since 1998 and their usage has resulted in a significant decrease in not only the number of instances of red light running but in red light running related collisions as well.
