Westminster plugs into the season with first-ever Holiday Electric Parade

By Katie V. Jones Posted 11/22/09

On the evening of Nov. 28, the streets of Westminster will be aglow to greet the holiday season as some 50 floats — each with more than 2,000 lights — travel down Main Street as part of the city's first-ever "Holiday Electric Parade."

The parade is expanding on the Westminster tradition of hosting a Christmas parade, followed by a tree lighting.

The idea of adding the element of an "electric light parade" had been suggested by Eileen Gist, a volunteer, for years, and she's thrilled to see it come to light.
"They call me the 'electric chair,' " Gist laughed.

[…]

Watching Lori Graham, a parade organizer, create lighted lamp posts out of bird feeders for a float that will carry Mayor Kevin Utz and the Common Council…

[…]

From midday to night, Nov. 28 will feature a variety of events, starting with a children's carnival in the parking lot off Locust Lane at 1 p.m., and a showing of Laurel and Hardy movies at the Carroll Arts Center at 2:30 p.m.

The Wishbone Mile benefit run will be held at 4:45 p.m., and the Holiday Electric Light Parade will begin at 5 p.m., starting at Pennsylvania Avenue and proceeding down Main Street to Longwell Avenue.

The tree lighting will be held at the conclusion of the parade, at Locust Lane. From there, children and their families are invited to the Westminster Family Fitness Center on Longwell, where the city's Recreation and Parks Department will host "Santa's Treat," a party for children.

Many local businesses will also stay open late for "Starlight Shopping."  http://www.explorecarroll.com/news/3643/glow/

Merry Christmas weeks early Bill Moyers Retiring From Weekly Television

Bill Moyers Retiring From Weekly Television

November 21, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff

Merry Christmas weeks early. It’s a great day in American, “Bill Moyers is leaving weekly television.”

One of the best things about him leaving television is that his departure is scheduled to take place in just a few weeks. Yes, that’s right, Mr. Moyers, the hypocritical smug Prince of thug-journalism who raised concepts such as situational ethics and moral relativism to a high art form, will be leaving public television this Christmas.

Merry Christmas America. His last day ought to be declared a national day of celebration.

I guess with a Democratic administration in power; there is no need for him to continue leach off of taxpayer dollars and bash the Republicans and act-out on Bush Derangement Syndrome on the so-called politically-neutral Public Broadcasting System.

According to a Huffington Post news brief, “The New York Times' Elizabeth Jensen reports that the PBS newscaster is retiring from his Friday night program, ‘Bill Moyers Journal,’ on April 30, 2010. ‘Bill Moyers Journal’ launched in April 2007.”

And what journey onto hell his “Journal” was.

"I am 75 years old," Moyers told Jensen. "I feel it's time."

It’s really about time. It was “time” before he even began the program.

Good riddance. Don’t let the door hit you on the ass as you are leaving.

Troopers Injured In Pursuit

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 21, 2009

Troopers Injured In Pursuit

(Largo, MD) - Two Maryland state troopers are hospitalized and a suspect is in custody facing criminal charges after an extended pursuit this afternoon from Prince George’s County to Baltimore County along Interstate 95/495.

The suspect is a 30-year-old man believed to be from Pennsylvania. He is in State Police custody and is expected to be charged later tonight.

The injured troopers are identified as Trooper Michael O’Brien and Trooper Alphrin Norman, both of whom are assigned to road patrol duties at the College Park Barracks. The troopers are both listed in stable condition at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

A motorist injured in the incident is identified as Ellen Sistare, of Mitchellville, Md. She is currently being treated at the Prince George’s Hospital Center.

The preliminary investigation indicates the following information.
Shortly after 10:30 a.m. today, multiple calls were received at the Maryland State Police College Park Barracks from motorists reporting an erratic driver who was operating in a dangerous manner on the inner loop of I-495 near Largo. The vehicle was described as a red Ford Mustang with Pennsylvania registration.

Trooper J. Deible, from the College Park Barracks took a stationary position in a crossover on the inner loop of I-495 at Rt. 201. He spotted the suspect vehicle traveling behind a Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office vehicle. The driver, and sole occupant of the suspect vehicle, was flashing his headlights, apparently attempting to prompt the sheriff’s vehicle to move out of his way, but then made an unsafe lane change and swerved around the vehicle.

Trooper Deible activated his emergency equipment and attempted to stop the Mustang. Instead of stopping, the driver threw a pack of cigarettes from the convertible back onto the trooper’s car and continued to drive erratically, switching lanes and passing slower traffic on the shoulders of the interstate.

Continuing to weave through traffic and cut vehicles off, the suspect took Rt. 202 toward Bladensburg. Prince George’s County Police units entered the pursuit in this area. The suspect went back onto I-495 and eventually took the crossover north of Rt. 4 and started back north on the outer loop of I-495.

In the area of the Rt. 202, the preliminary investigation indicates the suspect swerved into the side of Trooper Norman’s marked patrol car and forced it into Trooper O’Brien’s marked patrol car. Both police cars spun out of control and crashed on either side of the interstate. In this same location, Ms. Sistare’s vehicle was struck, but it is not clear at this time which vehicle struck hers.

The suspect continued north onto I-95 north towards Baltimore. Maryland State Police and Prince George’s County Police continued in pursuit. State Police notified Maryland Transportation Authority Police of the approaching pursuit.

The pursuit continued into the Ft. McHenry Tunnel on I-95. Just after the toll plaza, Maryland Transportation Authority Police officers had deployed tire deflation devices. The suspect struck those devices, lost control of his car, and then struck two Prince George’s County Police patrol vehicles. Neither county officer was injured, but one of the patrol cars was disabled.

The suspect was taken into custody by police on the scene. He was transported to Bayview Hospital where he was examined and released about 3:00 p.m. Upon his release, troopers transported him back to the College Park Barrack for processing. Troopers will consult with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding charges, which are expected to be placed later tonight.

The investigation is continuing.

B P Sears: Baltimore Co Salary advisory board violated Open Meetings Act

Portion of discussion on raises should have been public, senior official said By Bryan P. Sears bsears@patuxent.com Posted 11/20/09

A salary advisory board violated the state Open Meetings Act, a senior county official said today.

The Baltimore County Personnel and Salary Advisory Board met Nov. 18 to recommend pay increases for the county executive and members of the County Council but did not open to the public an earlier unannounced meeting during which the particulars of their recommendations were discussed.

County Administrative Officer Fred Homan acknowledged in a brief phone call made to a reporter late Friday afternoon that the board violated the act by not opening the unannounced meeting.

“We do believe that, in fact, they did (violate the law) and we’re going to institute some training,” Homan said.

The county Office of Law began a review of the lawfulness of not making public the unannounced meeting after Patuxent Publishing Co., publisher of this Web site, raised questions with a county attorney.

An hour’s pay for the working poor

In addition to our families and our health, we have many things for which to be thankful. As we begin the holidays, let our Thanksgiving also be revealed in the compassionate support our community renders to citizens who are less fortunate.

Uniformed squirrel leader returns, makes demands

Uniformed squirrel leader returns, makes demands

10-68: OMG! 10-15 in progress - - The squirrels have returned – in force. There are making demands. 10-10 with a deranged 10-96 former mayor and a marauding band of angry squirrels.

For the story so far:

This is a peanut butter emergency

This not a drill.

This is a peanut butter emergency. Call 911.

(I wonder what would happen if I called the Westminster Police Department? Do you think they deliver emergency rations of peanut butter?)

The Grammy: “I thought that peanut butter jar was for the squirrels!”

10-96 Mayor: “There is still a peanut butter emergency in my household. I put the jar you gave us for the squirrels out back and then when I discovered that we had the peanut butter emergency, I promptly went out back and wrestled the jar away from the squirrels and licked the jar clean myself. The squirrels are not amused and have threatened to call the police. I gave them Brenda Roper's phone number. Stay tuned as the drama here continues to unfold.”

In an update Mr. Sears filed earlier today, “Browser trouble?”, he notes that the best browser to use to listen to the audio on the http://www.explorebaltimorecounty.com/ web site is Mozilla Firefox.

Or, he calls to our attention: “Here’s a direct link if you want to try Youtube.” It may be found on his YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/bpsearsppc

Caramel Creams

Caramel Creams

Today, let’s celebrate Caramel Creams – it’s an entire food group all to itself. Click here for a larger image: http://twitpic.com/q3oyc or here: http://kevindayhoff.tumblr.com/post/249665574/today-lets-celebrate-caramel-creams-its-an

According to the Goetze’s web site: “August Goetze purchased the Baltimore Chewing Gum Company five generations ago in 1895…

1895: “August L. Goetze and his son, William A. Goetze, began manufacturing a variety of confections in Baltimore, Maryland. The company was then known as the Baltimore Chewing Gum Company, and was located around the corner from the world-famous John[s] Hopkins Hospital…”

1917: “R. Melvin Goetze, Sr., made chunkees (Caramel Creams without the center) at home, which soon developed into the first Caramel Creams when the cream center was added…”

And now you know.
