Dec. 31, 2016 - Do not drink and drive. Your dog would not understand why you never came home. I mean, I can explain to your family, friends and loved-ones that you had a terrible accident – but how will I be able to tell your dog? Help me out here – do not drink and drive. Give it a rest. Give me a break. Give the keys to a designated driver. Just saying. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10209669173819709&set=a.1514955267414.75651.1040426835&type=3&theater

The legend of Santa Claus and the nine reindeer by Kevin Dayhoff

The legend of Santa Claus and the nine reindeer by Kevin Dayhoff Merry Christmas.

The tradition that Santa Claus, or Father Christmas as he is known in England, traveled through the night in a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer is thought to be a Scandinavian myth.

We got the ninth reindeer, Rudolf, from the department store, Montgomery Ward. The character first appeared in a 1939 publication by Robert L. May, which was marketed by Montgomery Ward. According to many sources, including a December 25, 2013 story on "Morning Edition," on NPR, the author considered the name 'Reginald' or 'Rollo,' before settling upon the name Rudolf...

First snow and ice of the season hits Carroll County

First snow and ice of the season hits Carroll County

Dec. 17, 2016

We did not enjoy the cold and the snow today as we ran a few errands. I do not like winter. Dec. 17, 2016

The roads were in fairly good shape this afternoon thanks to the hard work of the Westminster, Carroll County, and Maryland snow removal crews. They are rock stars and rank up there with Santa Claus this time of the year.

However, I imagine all the wet roads are going to turn to ice this evening. If you do not have to go out, stay home. If you must go out on the roads, please be safe.

The firefighters, EMS providers, and police work hard to keep you safe and we want all our men and woman in uniform to go home safe to their families at the end of the day. Do your part, and make some hot chocolate and watch the Hallmark channel from the warmth and safety of your living room couch.

First president racks-up $300,000 in overdue library fines - May 10, 2010 by Kevin Dayhoff

Our nation’s first president may never have told a lie, but he was not without his faults. http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2010/05/our-nations-first-president-may-not_15.html

First president racks-up $300,000 in overdue library fines. http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2010/05/our-nations-first-president-may-not_15.html

Too funny. Sadly, the links for most of 1,000 stories I wrote in the Carroll Eagle Section, all its predecessors, the Westminster Eagle et al; from the years before The Baltimore Sun purchased the Carroll County Times – are now all dead. Really bums me out.

However, I cross-posted a link to many of the stories on my websites, kevindayhoff.net and kevindayhoff.org …

I was recently reminded of one of my all-time favorite stories of my all-time favorite stories in response to a colleague’s (CAMK) confession on Facebook that she owes the library late-fees. Too funny. Epic… Dec. 14, 2016 / ked. All of you are in good company: First president racks-up $300,000 in overdue library fines. http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2010/05/our-nations-first-president-may-not_15.html

May 10, 2010 by Kevin Dayhoff

The BBC is reporting that archivists in New York’s oldest library have uncovered a surprising borrower with overdue books.

It has been recently revealed that on October 5, 1789, our nation’s first president, George Washington, borrowed two books from what was then the only library in Manhattan, the New York Society Library.

According to the BBC, on October 5, 1789, a time when New York City was serving as our nation’s capital, President Washington borrowed the “Law of Nations,” a dissertation on international relations, and volume 12 of a collection of transcripts of debate transcripts from Britain's House of Commons.

Now this in itself may not be earth-shattering news.  However there is a catch.  It appears that the books were due a month later but they were never returned.

At the moment, the overdue fines for this lapse, by the president who never told a lie, have grown to $300,000.00 in the ensuing 220 years.

The BBC reports that although the library is willing to excuse the fine from the first president, it does, however, want the books back. “Sadly for fans of 18th-Century political literature, they appear to have vanished,” laments the BBC.

Locally, in Carroll County, the first library did not open until 1863, so that rules-out the opportunity for President Washington to have any overdue library fines in Carroll County.

Furthermore, the Carroll County Public Library is not aware of any president who has any overdue library books, according to Gregor Becker, an information specialist with the local library.

I believe in Santa Claus by Kevin Earl Dayhoff

December 9, 2016

Throughout history, Westminster and Carroll County have been filled with the spirit of the season for the Christmas holidays. No Grinches here.

I hope that by now you are putting the final touches on your Christmas decorations and wrapping presents with some soothing heavy metal Christmas music on in the background.

Actually, some of my all-time Christmas favorites include "The Chipmunk Song" sung by Alvin and the Chipmunks in 1958 and "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" written by John Rox and performed by Gayla Peevey, 10 years old at the time, in 1953.

Another classic that comes to mind is a little more offbeat, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by Tommie Connor. He was only 13 years old when it was recorded in 1952. The song was actually banned by the Catholic Church in several cities.

Yes, of course, I believe in Santa Claus.

I believe because Dolly Pardon and local community leader Mary Bostwick Shellman have told me that Santa exists...

‘Kenny & Dolly: A Christmas to Remember’, Published November 15, 1984 / Last Updated August 23, 2015: ‘Kenny & Dolly – Christmas To Remember’ is a network television Christmas special inspired by their popular album, ‘Once Upon a Christmas’

In 1984, Dolly Parton starred alongside of Kenny Rogers in “Kenny & Dolly: A Christmas To Remember,” a network television special inspired by “Once Upon A Christmas,” a popular Christmas album recorded by Dolly and Kenny Rogers.

Parton told the world that she believes in Santa Claus on December 2, 1984 when she sang “I Believe in Santa Claus” with Kenny Rogers in a Christmas special on CBS, “Kenny & Dolly – Christmas To Remember.” According to her website, dollyparton.com, the Christmas special show was “inspired by their popular album, ‘Once Upon a Christmas.’” http://dollyparton.com/life-and-career/movies-television/christmas-to-remember/463

‘Kenny & Dolly’ sang, “… I believe in Santa Claus I'll tell you why I do… I believe that dreams and plans and wishes can come true. I believe in miracles I believe in magic too. I believe in Santa Claus and I believe in you. I believe in family in country and in smiles. I believe in turning negatives to positives in life…”

In Carroll County, we are dealing with the consequences of years of paying high Maryland state taxes and contributing to the Maryland transportation fund and getting nothing in return.

We are long overdue to have the state address many of the neglected but much needed road and intersection upgrades.

Not only are the roads not designed in Carroll County to handle the current traffic loads but also it seems many folks could stand to be more patient and polite. Just saying
