Eagle Archive: A New Windsor summer made glorious by William Shakespeare

Eagle Archive: A New Windsor summer made glorious by William Shakespeare

By Kevin Dayhoff, August 26, 2012: https://wp.me/p8C7tH-am On the morning of Aug. 22, in 1485, a defining moment in English history took place with the death of Richard III in the Battle of Bosworth Field.

This of course, leads us directly to the summer of 1938 at Blue Ridge College in New Windsor.

Well, sorta-kinda.

I'll explain … after I wax poetic with William Shakespeare: "Now is the winter of our discontent, Made glorious summer by this son of York…"

Many will recognize that these lines appear in Shakespeare's "Richard III" — the last play of a study in history of the Wars of Roses by Shakespeare, which includes, "Henry VI, parts 1, 2 and 3," "Richard II" and "Henry V." Of all of Shakespeare's work, "Richard III" remains my favorite (followed by, on any given day, "As You Like It").

My next column will be on the upcoming New Windsor Heritage Committee Summer's End Home and Garden Tour on September 10, 2016 from 1:00 to 5:00p.m.

I interviewed Frank Batavick by email and one of the great resources he provided me about the event is this press release about the tour.

Sadly, many of my print stories have not been making it to the web – but if it does, it will be located here: http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/search/dispatcher.front?Query=Kevin+Dayhoff&target=all&spell=on

NEW WINDSOR HERITAGE ANNOUNCES 2016 SUMMER'S END HOME & GARDEN TOUR

New Windsor Heritage is sponsoring a Summer's End Home and Garden Tour on September 10, 2016 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The event features five historic homes and gardens, a contemporary home with extensive plantings, a restored 1854 school house, an 18th century log house, and a jewel of an 1897 church. Each site will include plein air artists working in a variety of media, and Master Gardeners will be on-hand to answer questions about the gardens on tour and attendees’ own trees, shrubs, and plants.

Homes include an 1813 high-style, Federal era, three story bank house/villa and an early 19th century Piedmont Plantation house. Owners and docents will be on-hand to share each house's history. A special attraction is the Springdale School where a teacher and students in period costumes will conduct lessons derived from 19th century textbooks.

Each visitor will receive a tour booklet containing descriptions of the homes and gardens and a map to the sites. The booklet will serve as a ticket to all of the locations. Admission is $15 per person, and children under 12 are free.

Fees may be paid on the day of the tour starting at 12:45 p.m. at the New Windsor Heritage Museum, 207 Main Street, right next to New Windsor State Bank. Drinks, snacks, and rest room facilities will be available.

For additional information about the tour and the houses and gardens featured, please contact Dori or Frank Batavick at 410-848-5263.

The New Windsor Heritage Committee is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization founded in 1986 and dedicated to the preservation and documentation of all aspects of the history of New Windsor, Maryland. New Windsor's Dielman Inn on list of endangered historic properties

New Windsor's Dielman Inn on list of endangered historic properties

Inn sprang from tavern owned by town founder, but now is in disrepair

A New Windsor tavern turned inn, dating back to the early 19th century, is among the state's "endangered" historical properties, according to Preservation Maryland, a statewide advocacy group.

The Dielman Inn in New Windsor, located at Main and High streets, is described by the group as "a 42-room amalgamation of a number of early 19th century buildings."

The inn has been mostly vacant since 2004, and much of the structure has fallen into disrepair. The Town of New Windsor bought it in early 2011, and is seeking proposals for development. But if no proposals emerge, the town may sell the site, and currently has it on the market.

Dielman Inn is among 10 locations listed on the 2012 Endangered Maryland list of threatened historic properties, released March 15 by the nonprofit Preservation Maryland.

[…]

Other locations on the list include the Pest House, a Cockeysville building that was once a home for people with communicable diseases; Bostwick, a Prince George's County site that was damaged in last year's earthquake; a Silver Spring church that could be leveled to make way for a new house of worship; and "Superblock," a section of Baltimore's west side that the group says has redevelopment threats to its "outstanding collection of historically and culturally significant buildings."

This year's list also names a working class category — "Maryland Watermen" — as being endangered as well due to declining oyster populations… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/ph-ce-dielman-endangered-0325-20120317,0,5450783.story

New Windsor students dig deep to explore archaeology and local history

New Windsor students dig deep to explore archaeology and local history By Bob Allen
November 25, 2011
Digging into the past can be an intriguing and enlightening experience.
But when it involves slogging for hours through shin-deep mud and frigid water on a chilly November morning, it might tend to dampen the intrigue and stifle the enlightenment a little bit.
Not so for a dozen or so students from New Windsor Middle School who, on a recent Saturday morning, participated in an ongoing archaeological dig at one of New Windsor's landmarks, its 1797 springhouse.
Long ago, tourists from as far away as Philadelphia flocked to this Carroll County hamlet to partake of the spring's sulphur-laden "wonder waters." ... http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/education/ph-ce-kid-dig-1127-20111121,0,5638152.story
