City teachers upset about mail clause in proposed contract
They criticize clause shutting down communication channels

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/education/blog/bs-md-ci-teachers-contract-complaints-20140205,0,1925347.story

"By Erica L. Green, The Baltimore Sun 7:59 p.m. EST, February 5, 2014

On any given day, a teacher's mailbox is usually chock full of messages: leaflets advertising professional development, discount coupons for office supplies, publications from curriculum companies, and book club invitations.

But under a contract that teachers are expected to vote on Thursday, they fear that such communication would cease — unless it comes from the Baltimore Teachers Union.

City teachers are criticizing an unusual clause included in the proposed contract that appears to give the union the exclusive right to disseminate information via email or through teachers' mailboxes. They say the new language is too broad and attempts to silence dissenters and disempower those who organize outside of union parameters."

Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey won re-election on Tuesday, defeating his Democratic rival, State Senator Barbara Buono, by a crushing margin. The victory vaulted him to the front ranks of Republican presidential contenders.
In a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans by 700,000, Mr. Christie won decisively, making impressive inroads among younger voters, blacks, Hispanics and women – all groups that Republicans nationally have struggled to attract...

Eagle Archive: Where were you when Twinkie the Kid and Captain Cupcake died? By Kevin E. Dayhoff Dec 8, 2012 http://tinyurl.com/bqf5tfo

November 21, 2012, was a sad day.

As many were looking forward to sharing Thanksgiving dinner with friends and family; Hostess Brands, the makers of Twinkies, Wonder Bread, Ding Dongs and many other culinary delights high in the food pyramid, announced it was closing its 85-year old business.

The Hostess Brands website did not mince words, "Hostess Brands is Closed. We are sorry to announce that Hostess Brands, Inc. has been forced by a Bakers Union strike to shut down all operations and sell all company assets.

"Thank you for all of your loyalty and support over the years. …The wind down means the closure of 33 bakeries, 565 distribution centers, approximately 5,500 delivery routes, 570 bakery outlet stores and the loss of 18,500 jobs."

If such treats as Suzy Q's, Dolly Madison Zingers and HoHos are not a critical part of your childhood, then certainly you remember the holy trinity of spokespersons for Hostess: Captain Cupcake, Fruit Pie the Magician and Twinkie the Kid.

Certainly many of the 30 Hostess products are a strong childhood memory for many Carroll Countians. As soon as the news that an expiration date had finally been determined for the Twinkies family, the Eagle Archives crisis lines lit-up with inquiries as whether or not it was true that Dolly Madison and Twinkie the Kid were no longer with us… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-1209-20121208,0,344660.story

Washington Post - Dylan Matthews: How much do Chicago teachers make?

How much do Chicago teachers make?

Posted by Dylan Matthews on September 11, 2012

Monday, I passed along the Chicago Public Schools’ estimate of the mean teacher salary, which is $74,839. Pro-union sources are objecting, with some putting the figure at $56,720, almost $20,000 below CPS’ estimate. So is the school district just lying about this? … http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/wp/2012/09/11/how-much-do-chicago-teachers-make/

Supreme Court deals blow to unions

By David G. Savage

JewishWorldReview.com

WASHINGTON—(MCT)The U.S. Supreme Court sharply criticized public-sector unions for using money from nonmembers to fund special political campaigns, stepping into the intense political debate about such unions and signaling that new constitutional limits may be coming.

The justices ruled Thursday that the Service Employees International Union in California violated the First Amendment rights of its dissident members by taking extra fees from their paychecks in 2005. The money was used to fight two anti-union ballot measures.

"This aggressive use of power by the SEIU to collect fees from nonmembers is indefensible," said Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., speaking for the court's majority. "When a public-sector union imposes a special assessment or dues increase, the union ... may not exact any funds from nonmembers without their affirmative consent."

The court fight carried echoes of the recent battles in Wisconsin, Ohio and other states where Republican governors sought to limit the power of public-sector unions, and the two dissenters Thursday made reference to those tensions… http://www.jewishworldreview.com/0612/supreme_court_unions.php3

Maryland Reporter: State employee unions will start collecting fees from non-members

July 05, 2011

Starting this month, all of the state’s employees who are represented by two labor unions will be paying a service fee to the unions, even if they are not members.

The service fees authorized by a 2009 state law range from $161 to $388 a year. They were negotiated as part of the most recent contracts for the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees and the State Law Enforcement Officers Labor Alliance. Both contracts went into effect July 1.

The fees are based on the theory that the unions furnish services that impact all employees. These services include negotiating health benefits and work conditions, or representing workers in disputes with managers. Those who don’t join the union and pay union dues have to pay a fee for that representation.

AFSCME

AFSCME represents 21,000 employees throughout state government, and about 8,500 of them are members of the union.

Sue Esty, associate director of AFSCME Maryland, said that the fee will start coming out of non-members’ paychecks during the first entire pay period in the new fiscal year, which began Friday. Members’ dues are $14.96 a pay period. Most non-members will also have to pay $14.96 a pay period, though non-members who object to the union’s political activities will be paying just $10.80 out of each paycheck. Additionally, non-members who object to paying the union on religious grounds will either have their money donated to a nonprofit, or not have to pay.

AFSCME representatives said that there are still ongoing negotiations that may lower fees for non-members. The new fees are expected to generate over $4 million for the union…  http://marylandreporter.com/2011/07/05/state-employee-unions-will-start-collecting-fees-from-non-members/
