The Hill: Dems push leaders to talk less about Russia

News Alert

The Hill: Dems push leaders to talk less about Russia
June 24, 2017

Frustrated Democrats hoping to elevate their election fortunes have a resounding message for party leaders: Stop talking so much about Russia.
Democratic leaders have been beating the drum this year over the ongoing probes into the Trump administration’s potential ties to Moscow, taking every opportunity to highlight the saga and forcing floor votes designed to uncover any business dealings the president might have with Russian figures.
But rank-and-file Democrats say the Russia-Trump narrative is simply a non-issue with district voters, who are much more worried about bread-and-butter economic concerns like jobs, wages and the cost of education and healthcare.

“The letter written by Coretta Scott King about Jeff Sessions that Elizabeth Warren wasn't allowed to read on the Senate Floor.”

“The letter written by Coretta Scott King about Jeff Sessions that Elizabeth Warren wasn't allowed to read on the Senate Floor.”

Senate confirms Sessions as attorney general BY JORDAIN CARNEY - 02/08/17 07:20 PM EST http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/senate/318608-senate-confirms-sessions-as-attorney-general

https://www.scribd.com/document/338729117/Scott-King-1986-Letter-and-Testimony-Signed

The Senate voted Wednesday night to confirm Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) as attorney general, capping a vicious debate that left Democrats and Republicans alike seething at times.

No Republicans went against Sessions in the 52-47 vote. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) was the only Democrat to back Sessions.

[…]

Republicans decried the Democratic tactics, arguing they were going to new lows to smear Sessions.

[…]

The fiery words in the last days of the debate over Sessions were somewhat surprising.

While the issue of race had always hung over the debate, Sessions is well-liked personally by many senators. That made the stinging words all the more noteworthy — and raises questions about the ability of lawmakers to work together going forward.

March 19, 1986

According to the Washington Post, “Coretta Scott King, the widow of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., urged Congress in a letter to block the 1986 nomination of Jeff Sessions for federal judge, saying that allowing him to join the federal bench would ‘irreparably damage the work of my husband.’”

“In the letter, King writes that Sessions’s ascension to the federal bench ‘simply cannot be allowed to happen,’ arguing that as a U.S. attorney, the Alabama lawmaker pursued ‘politically-motivated voting fraud prosecutions’ and that he ‘lacks the temperament, fairness and judgment to be a federal judge.’ She said Sessions’s conduct in prosecuting civil rights leaders in a voting-fraud case ‘raises serious questions about his commitment to the protection of the voting rights of all American citizens.’” https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2017/01/10/read-the-letter-coretta-scott-king-wrote-opposing-sessionss-1986-federal-nomination/?utm_term=.dfbccea3ba10

Republicans vote to rebuke Elizabeth Warren, saying she impugned Sessions’s character By Paul Kane and Ed O'Keefe February 7 at 11:39 PM

“Senate Republicans passed a party-line rebuke Tuesday night of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) for a speech opposing attorney general nominee Jeff Sessions, striking down her words for impugning the Alabama senator’s character.

“In an extraordinarily rare move, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) interrupted Warren’s speech, in a near-empty chamber as debate on Sessions’s nomination heads toward a Wednesday evening vote, and said that she had breached Senate rules by reading past statements against Sessions from figures such as the late senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) and the late Coretta Scott King.”

[…]

The Senate voted, 49 to 43, strictly on party lines, to uphold the ruling that Warren violated Rule 19 of the Senate that says senators are not allowed to “directly or indirectly, by any form of words impute to another Senator or to other Senators any conduct or motive unworthy or unbecoming a Senator.” Pursuant to that rule, Warren was ordered to sit down and forbidden from speaking during the remainder of the debate on the nomination of Sessions.

Writer and author Joseph F. Steffen Jr., 57, died Fri. Jan. 27, 2017

Writer and author Joseph F. Steffen Jr., 57, died Fri. Jan. 27, 2017
By Jacques Kelly and Luke Broadwater, The Baltimore Sun, Feb. 1, 2017 http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/obituaries/bs-md-ob-joseph-steffen-20170201-story.html

Joseph F. Steffen Jr., a Republican political operative who enjoyed describing himself as the "Prince of Darkness," died of coronary disease Friday at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. The Dundalk resident was 57.

His daughter Jennifer Steffen, with whom he lived, said her father suffered two strokes several years ago.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Reisterstown, he was the son of Joseph F. Steffen Sr., a machinist, and Anne Steffen. He attended Sacred Heart School and was a 1977 Franklin High School graduate. He then did odd jobs before he began working as a speechwriter in Republican politics.

"He was noticed for an article he wrote in a Reisterstown newspaper, and went on to work for [conservative figures] Linda Chavez and Richard Viguerie," his daughter said. "On the basis of that initial article, he was noticed by the National Conservative Action Committee, and at age 23, he became a press secretary for it."

Mr. Steffen was best known for his work in the rough-and-tumble world of Maryland politics, including more than a decade working for former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.

Frederick News-Post: Political Notes: Getting schooled on presidential politics By Danielle E. Gaines

Hood College professors are holding classes this fall to bring their students context — and a healthy dose of skepticism, the school says — on the upcoming presidential election.

I sat in on Carin Robinson’s “Election 2016” special topics class this Monday.

[…]

Peters said the state of the party is “a disaster” with the fault line between Donald Trump die-hards and old-school D.C. political elitists.

“My hope is that it can end quickly,” he said.

Rob Lowe Burns President Obama for His Interviews with Youtube Stars and Twitter Roars in Approval

This is the president who won the Nobel Peace Prize and campaigned that he was going to solve all the conflicts of the world by talking to anyone and everyone…

Weeks later I am still laughing….

LOL On Jan. 22, 2015, Rob Lowe (@RobLowe) caused a Twitter uproar when he asked: "Hold up. Is it true that a woman who eats cereal out of a bathtub gets to meet with the President and the Prime Minister of Israel does not?"

Oh my - this won't do. I'm sure Bibi does.not.care.Really - Just saying...

Politico: Benjamin Netanyahu’s side strikes back

Benjamin Netanyahu’s side strikes back

Now comes the backlash to the Bibi backlash.

By Edward-Isaac Dovere and Jake Sherman

2/6/15

Now comes the backlash to the Bibi backlash.

Republican and conservative Jewish organizations are threatening shaming campaigns against Democrats who skip Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned speech to a joint meeting of Congress next month. Even talking about not showing, they say, is forsaking America’s relationship with Israel.

Joe Biden apparently isn't worried. A spokesperson for the vice president on Friday said Biden would not preside over the joint meeting because he'll be travelling abroad.

The furor around the speech, which Democrats say is forcing them to choose between loyalty to Israel and loyalty to their party, reflects a slow transformation. Though the overwhelming majority of American Jewish voters remain Democrats, Jewish Republicans have grown in numbers and influence. That’s a trend conservative Israeli politicians, led by Netanyahu, are seeking to use to their advantage—and a small number of well-funded right-leaning American Jews are eager to exploit.

Carroll County Md Commissioners vote for legislative initiative to fill vacancies with special election

Carroll County Md Commissioners vote for legislative initiative to fill vacancies with special election

Carroll County Times article by Wiley Hayes: Late legislative initiative to limit central committee's responsibilities

The Carroll County Board of Commissioners will be submitting a late addition to their legislative package to take away the power of the Carroll County Republican Central Committee to select the replacement of a county commissioner in the event of an opening.

This legislation is in part due to the controversial decision by the committee to only recommend former Commissioner Robin Bartlett Frazier to replace Sen. Joe Getty. The Republican Central Committee has since reversed course and recommended three names to Gov. Larry Hogan for the seat.

The commissioners voted 3-2 on Thursday to send this legislation to the Carroll County delegation. Commissioners Stephen Wantz, R-District 1, and Richard Rothschild R-District 4, were the opposing votes.

Len Lazarick MarylandReporter.com: Delegates want voters to
fill vacancies in legislature, but GOP wants to keep party role

By Len Lazarick Len@MarylandReporter.com

Two freshman delegates from each party are working on
legislation to give voters a greater role in filling legislative seats that
become vacant.

At the same time, Republican Party officials are working on
ways to establish statewide party rules that will maintain the strong role of
party central committees in the process and avoid the special elections the
delegates are proposing.

The issue is a hot one in Annapolis as three counties must
fill seats held by senators and a delegate who have now become part of the
Hogan administration.

The Maryland Constitution gives the local party committees a
key role in selecting a replacement for senators and delegates from their own
party. But it does not specify a process for how they select a name to send to
the governor, who makes the final appointment.

The Republican Central Committees in Carroll, Frederick and
Washington counties all used different methods to select replacements for Sen.
Joe Getty, Del. Kelly Schulz and Sen. Chris Shank. Carroll had the most
secretive process, voting in closed meetings on names of applicants the
committee would not reveal.

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.:) GOP won the Senate because of racist Southerners

Democratic Congressman: GOP won the Senate because of racist Southerners Posted on November 5, 2014 by Sam Rolley

According to Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.), the GOP’s senatorial gains in the 2014 midterms have nothing to do with voter frustration at President Barack Obama or failed policies from his party. Republicans won, Rangel contends, because Americans are racist.

Last week, Rangel claimed that Southern Republicans still believe in slavery and think the Confederates won the Civil War. That, he said, is why voters in the South would reject progressive Democratic candidates.

According to the lawmaker, voter ID laws and other GOP causes relate directly to lingering Southern racism.

Rangel had said during a Democratic campaign rally in New York: “We have to win, and we’re going to be able to send a national message. … And the thing is, everything we believe in, everything we believe in they hate! They don’t disagree, they hate! ... http://personalliberty.com/democratic-congressman-gop-won-senate-racist-southerners/

The Heritage Foundation: The Pity Party A Mean-Spirited Diatribe Against Liberal Compassion

The Heritage Foundation invites you to a Book Event t

The Pity Party
A Mean-Spirited Diatribe Against Liberal Compassion

featuring author William Voegeli
Senior Editor, Claremont Review of Books

The finest trick of the devil, Baudelaire once wrote, is to persuade you that he does not exist.  Modern liberalism, being far less devilish, has pulled a lesser, but still effective, trick: It has convinced Americans that conservatives don’t care.  In fact, the left has made “caring” their exclusive prerogative and successfully framed most political debates as pitting compassionate liberals against heartless conservatives.  Along the way, liberals have built a remarkable edifice of government programs that are justified by appeals to citizens’ compassion.

In The Pity Party: A Mean-Spirited Diatribe Against Liberal Compassion, Bill Voegeli offers a scathing critique of the politics of liberal compassion.  Voegeli chronicles how liberal compassion ultimately fails to deliver on its promise to help others, although it never fails to make liberals feel better about themselves.

William Voegeli is a Senior Editor of the Claremont Review of Books, a Visiting Scholar at Claremont McKenna College’s Henry Salvatori Center, and the author of Never Enough: America’s Limitless Welfare State (Encounter Books, 2010).
