MDGOP Chairman Jim Pelura and Maryland McCain Campaign Chair Chris Cavey React to Governor Palin’s Acceptance Speech

“Governor Palin flipped the script on the media and the Democrats tonight with an amazing, game changing address,” said Chairman Pelura. “The shrill, negative attacks and dirty whisper campaign did not phase her. "She not only answered the critics tonight, she served notice that she and Senator McCain have the experience, judgment, and positive vision to lead this country. The Maryland Republican Party is so proud of our McCain/Palin ticket,” Pelura concluded.

“Sarah Palin has energized this campaign and our party,” said Maryland McCain Chairman Chris Cavey. “Like Senator McCain, she has used her career to affect real, positive change rather than using the buzzword of change to advance her career. Washington D.C. had better watch out because the McCain/Palin team is going to bring real reform to our government.”

Republican National Convention Breakfast Monday, September 1, 2008

Monday, September 1, 2008 by Kevin Dayhoff

Today is the first day of a much more subdued convention than what many of us had anticipated before Hurricane Gustav decided to crash the party.

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Arizona Sen. John McCain essentially cancelled everything except some party – convention parliamentary business.

Most of the Maryland delegation to the Republican National Convention here in Minneapolis St Paul, Minnesota got together early Monday morning for breakfast some presentations and business and events organizational updates.

This was especially important this morning as everything is very fluid…

This morning Maryland state delegate and convention delegate Tony O’Donnell and former Maryland state delegate and convention delegate Carmen Amedori presented an update on discussions and deliberations on the Republican National Party platform.

The platform process was not scripted and was very open. They had a blog which received over 15,000 suggestions, including videos and songs. The process was live on C-span. It was also recorded by court reporters – one was from Maryland.

The platform was reduced to 20,000 words – from 40,000. The prior year is used as the starting point for the subsequent year.

In other news tidbits, several members of the Maryland delegation are veterans of many conventions. For Anne Arundel county executive John Leopold (and about 2 others…) … it is their 8th Republican National Convention.

Although I have not seen her, political activist Phyllis Schlafly is staying in this hotel. I had also heard that political commentator Pat Buchanan is also staying here. I have not seen him either.

Of course, one of the challenges with such a politically charged congregation of over 45,000 folks from all over the country is rumor control and sometimes, getting hard information requires having good connections and lots of gumshoe detective work.

They expect some protestors in the convention hall. The suggested process is to outshout the protestors. Mr. Louis Pope, national committeeman, remembers the last convention in which a woman starting shouting anti-war slogans during President Bush’s speech – the crowd started yelling “4 more years.”

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, the vice presidential running mate announced last Friday, has re-invigorated the campaign. $5 million in new donations were received this weekend. MoveOn.org has lots of comments meant to be negative about Sarah Palin. They seem pretty positive to us. Of course, I have followed Governor Palin’s career for a number of years. As a fellow journalist who has also switched back and forth of the keyboard (an elected official whose profession is writing…) one of the very first things that caught my attention is that she has a degree in journalism.

… The assistant minority leader in House of Representatives for Minnesota – Laura Brod, also spoke this morning.

Next stop later in the morning is a luncheon reception at “Circus Juventas:”
www.circusjuventas.org.

John McCain Selects Alaska Governor Sarah Palin As Vice Presidential Running Mate

http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/News/PressReleases/b1a33b7f-5388-4ab9-99a4-95d9d35268ce.htm

ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain today announced that he has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate and to serve as his vice president.

Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington.

Governor Palin has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources. She leads a state that matters to every one of us -- Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.

In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the "bridge to nowhere" that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

As the head of Alaska's National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.

Governor Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today.

Could it be Alaska Governor Sarah Palin?

Could it be Alaska Governor Sarah Palin?

August 29, 2008 by Kevin Dayhoff

Of course, in a matter of hours we will know for sure; however, could it be that Arizona Sen. John McCain will choose Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate?

It would be a brilliant choice.

Here’s a screenshot of the McCain Palin website. Could it have been put up as a red herring to throw us off?

In spite of what I wrote on April 2, 2008, or here; the popular Alaska governor would certainly be my first choice – just slightly ahead of Florida Governor Charlie Crist; or South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford. My second choice would be either South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham or Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty.

Gov. Martin O'Malley is one of only three governors from the class of 2006 to have
net negative approval scores.

[…]

The most popular governors appear to be
Mike Beebe (D-Ark.) and Sarah Palin (R-Alaska), who both have favorable ratings of at least 80 percent.

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland (D) and Florida governor Charlie Crist (R) are in the middle of the pack, both with high approval ratings. In June, Crist had a 61 percent to 23 percent approval according to a
Quinnipiac poll, while a recent Quinnipiac poll placed Strickland a 60 percent to 25 percent approval rating.

According to a recent
Rocky Mountain News poll, Bill Ritter, the Democratic governor of Colorado, has a 50 percent to 26 percent favorability rating and a SurveyUSA poll in May found that Gov. Chet Culver (D) has a positive 51 percent to 43 percent approval in Iowa.

Little recent polling is available in Idaho, though a December 2007 survey showed governor Butch Otter (R) with an
approval rating of 65 percent to 19 percent.

Gov. Palin gives birth to son Trig

By KYLE HOPKINS April 18th, 2008

Gov. Sarah Palin gave birth to her fifth child at 6:30 this morning at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, her spokeswoman said today.

The boy's name is Trig Paxson Van Palin. He's 6 pounds, 2 ounces.

"The governor's labor began while she was in Texas, and I do know that she got on a plane and landed in Anchorage late last night," said Palin spokeswoman Sharon Leighow.

[…]

Palin and her husband, Todd, had been in Texas since Tuesday for a Republican Governors Association convention, Leighow said.

The Palin family issued a statement that read: "Trig is beautiful and already adored by us. We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives.

[…]

Earlier this year, Palin joked to a Daily News reporter that "we've always liked the middle name Van because, you know, growing up in the '80s, Van Palin would be a really cool name."

GOPAC Chair Michael Steele’s brief web site bio

April 3, 2008

In this past Wednesday’s Tentacle[1] column (The McCain Vice President Decision) I said that of my top three dream choices for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Senator John McCain’s vice presidential running mate; one of the three is former Maryland Lt. Governor Michael Steele.

The other two were Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

When I researching the column I re-read my latest Tentacle column, I came across the brief bio for Mr. Steele pasted below for the couple of folks I heard from who not familiar with him…

This post is for my Anchorage brother-in-law… And yes, the East Coast is slowly but surely discovering Alaska Governor Sarah Palin…

20080317 Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin on the vice-presidency

Speculation continues to persist as to whom Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain will choose as a running mate.

One person frequently mentioned in the mix is the popular Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin, 44. Many of us feel that she would do a great job as vice-president.

Then in an interview with the Washington Post in late February 2008; “When asked about whether she would consider the number-2 spot in the country -- the vice presidency… Pursing her lips, Palin calls it an ‘impossibility’ this time around, but not altogether out of the question.

Many folks did not pick up on her use of the words “impossibility this time around, but not altogether out of the question.”

In the video, carried by ABC Alaska News http://www.aksuperstation.com/, also notice the quick cameo appearance of former Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich…

And do not overlook her quick take on the candidacy of Senator Barack Obama…

Then, on or about March 6th, 2008, the matter of the curious words, “impossibility” was explained. Many media outlets carried the news, including the Anchorage Daily News http://www.adn.com/ and ABC Alaska News http://www.aksuperstation.com/; which carried the second half of this video:

“Gov. Sarah Palin dropped a day-ending bombshell. She's pregnant. Palin said Wednesday that she and her husband Todd are expecting their fifth child sometime in mid-May.”

When asked about how this new child would affect her, the Governor said, "This is one of those circumstances that has kinda shifted our way of thinking. It certainly makes me very much more so committed to even wanting to stay in Alaska, you know wanting to raise kids in Alaska and at some point in the future I don't know how far off in the future but in some point maybe there will be other doors open."

We certainly look forward to Governor Palin’s future national leadership; meanwhile congratulations are in order for the impending birth of her fifth child.

Mat Maid What a confusing mess

The Matanuska Maid state-owned dairy has had a good run -- 71 years, from the time the new Matanuska farm colony organized a cooperative and opened a creamery in 1936.

With losses mounting, though, it sounds like it may be time to let Mat Maid go. The dairy lost more than $1.3 million since 2005, according to Mac Carter, chair of the Creamery Board that runs Mat Maid. That includes a $700,000 debt from this year alone.

[…]

A string of troubling, sometimes goofy incidents further undermines confidence in Mat Maid's management.

Just a few weeks ago, Mat Maid was asking for $600,000 from the state to help keep the dairy going while it explored ways to make the operation profitable. Now, even before getting the $600,000, management has decided that Mat Maid must close, and right away.

Kaladi Brothers Coffee Co. said it called multiple times to try to do a million dollars' worth of business with Mat Maid and did not get a return phone call from the milk factory.

And there's unexplained friction between Gov. Sarah Palin and the Creamery Board. Mat Maid execs agreed, despite little advance notice, to take the governor on an informal tour of Mat Maid. When she showed up, the dairy wouldn't let her go without the chief executive there.

Later, there was some explanation of "security" concerns, and not having anyone there to get her to put on sanitary booties and a hair net. Come on, folks, the governor is not going to jump into a milk vat.

Readers who follow “Soundtrack” are aware that I try to keep up with all-things-Alaska. So I was a bit amused when it was called to my attention by “Anchorage Colonel B5” that in the midst of discussions over the “troubled Matanuska Maid diary:

“Gov. Sarah Palin has dismissed all seven members of the Alaska Board of Agriculture and Conservation, the group that ultimately has authority over the creamery board, and the troubled Matanuska Maid dairy.”

It gets better: when she showed up wanting a tour of their Anchorage dairy, officials refused to let her in and made her wait in the lobby for an hour.

What were they thinking?

Palin dismisses entire state agriculture board

Anchorage Daily News By KATIE PESZNECKER kpesznecker@adn.com June 18, 2007

MATANUSKA MAID: Action is first step to shaking up creamery board that decided to close state's dairy.

_____

Gov. Sarah Palin has dismissed all seven members of the Alaska Board of Agriculture and Conservation, the group that ultimately has authority over the creamery board, and the troubled Matanuska Maid dairy.

The governor will begin announcing replacements to serve on the board today, said Meghan Stapleton, Palin spokeswoman.

The appointments will be made quickly, Stapleton said Sunday, "So this board ... can at least start looking at the creamery board information and perhaps find some alternative solution. (Palin) recognizes and knows that it may mean that ultimately Mat Maid shuts down. But there's not been enough discussion ... about why all of the sudden doors are closing July 7."

Annual revenue at the state-owned dairy has been about $15 million in the past couple of years, but escalating debt led the board that runs the dairy to vote this month to close the dairy for good this summer.

Palin offered to intervene, wanting to avoid the sudden closure.

That didn't go well.

First, the creamery board that runs the dairy rejected her offer. Then, when she showed up wanting a tour of their Anchorage dairy, officials refused to let her in and made her wait in the lobby for an hour. She eventually left for a scheduled meeting.

Meet the AK Gov.-elect Sarah Palin Family

November 8th, 2006

On Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, former small-town Wasilla, AK Republican mayor Sarah Palin, 42, bucked the national trend of “Black Tuesday” for Republicans to successfully be elected to be the next governor of the AK. This introduction to Mayor Palin’s family is one of the commercials that helped put over the top.

Candidate of change resonated with voters

Published: November 7, 2006

Voters chose change over experience Tuesday night, making Republican Sarah Palin Alaska’s next governor and the first woman to hold the job.

On a night of political upheaval across the country, Democrat Tony Knowles couldn’t stop the wave of anti-establishment momentum that carried Palin from her small town roots in Wasilla, past incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski in the primary and into Alaska government’s top job.

With 98 percent of the precincts counted this morning, Palin had clinched the race with 48.7 percent of the vote to Knowles' 40.5 percent. Independent Andrew Halcro had 9.6 percent.

Palin, 42, claimed victory late Tuesday.
