I was so pleased that my friend Virginia Harrison got the 2015 Good Scout Award

I was so pleased that my friend Virginia Harrison got the 2015 Good Scout Award to recognize all her great selfless unsung work for Carroll County Md. Here, Alexander Bracy, left, helps Virginia, a dressmaker mind you, with the Boy Scout handkerchief.

I must admit that I have never seen a handkerchief look so good - except of course, when Caroline got the award last year... Several members of the school board, Bob Lord, and Jim Doolan, superintendent Steve Guthrie, and director of human services Jimmie Saylor were in attendance at the 7:30 am breakfast, to help recognize their fellow school board member Virginia, after the brutal public hearing the night before. I pray for the school board and I am embarrassed for our community for the way they are being treated.

Carroll's NAACP finds a community-building opportunity in Westminster's Memorial Day parade - May 26, 2015 by Heather Cobun Carroll County Times

Carroll's NAACP finds a community-building opportunity in Westminster's Memorial Day parade - May 26, 2015 by Heather Cobun Carroll County Times

Despite having a presence in the community for years, it wasn't until 2013 that Carroll County's NAACP chapter participated in the Westminster Memorial Day Parade for the first time, and this year's event was only the second for the local civil rights organization.

[…]

NAACP members have served in every war since the organization's founding in 1909, according to Pamela Zappardino, first vice president of Carroll's NAACP chapter.

[…]

Charles Harrison, an Army veteran who served in Vietnam, said he wanted to involve and highlight youth in the parade.

"I'd like to get them more involved and get kids in general more involved," he said of the Silver Oak students.

Harrison drove a convertible ahead of the NAACP float and invited his granddaughter and children and grandchildren of other members of the organization to ride with him.

Board of Ed appointee running as write-in

By Karen Kemp,
Carroll County Times Staff Writer Thursday, July 31, 2008

After being appointed to the Carroll County Board of Education in April, Virginia Harrison has decided she wants to serve on the board for another four years.

Harrison filed as a write-in candidate July 3, said Gail Carter, director of the Carroll County Board of Elections. Carter said Harrison first contacted the board about two months ago requesting information about running a write-in campaign.

Harrison was appointed at the April 9 board meeting by Gov. Martin O’Malley to fill a vacancy after member Jeff Morse resigned for using a racial slur while visiting a school construction site.

Her term expires in November, and she has attended four out of five board meetings so far.

However, Harrison said she has been involved in various school activities during the past 10 years and said she quickly absorbed the information about the processes involved in being a board member.

“I thought it was a good fit for me,” Harrison said.

While each polling place will have a list of write-in candidates posted on the wall during the election in November, Harrison’s name and those of other write-in candidates will not appear on the county’s touch-screen voting machines, according to Carter.
