The Hill: Dems push leaders to talk less about Russia

News Alert

The Hill: Dems push leaders to talk less about Russia
June 24, 2017

Frustrated Democrats hoping to elevate their election fortunes have a resounding message for party leaders: Stop talking so much about Russia.
Democratic leaders have been beating the drum this year over the ongoing probes into the Trump administration’s potential ties to Moscow, taking every opportunity to highlight the saga and forcing floor votes designed to uncover any business dealings the president might have with Russian figures.
But rank-and-file Democrats say the Russia-Trump narrative is simply a non-issue with district voters, who are much more worried about bread-and-butter economic concerns like jobs, wages and the cost of education and healthcare.

“The letter written by Coretta Scott King about Jeff Sessions that Elizabeth Warren wasn't allowed to read on the Senate Floor.”

“The letter written by Coretta Scott King about Jeff Sessions that Elizabeth Warren wasn't allowed to read on the Senate Floor.”

Senate confirms Sessions as attorney general BY JORDAIN CARNEY - 02/08/17 07:20 PM EST http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/senate/318608-senate-confirms-sessions-as-attorney-general

https://www.scribd.com/document/338729117/Scott-King-1986-Letter-and-Testimony-Signed

The Senate voted Wednesday night to confirm Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) as attorney general, capping a vicious debate that left Democrats and Republicans alike seething at times.

No Republicans went against Sessions in the 52-47 vote. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) was the only Democrat to back Sessions.

[…]

Republicans decried the Democratic tactics, arguing they were going to new lows to smear Sessions.

[…]

The fiery words in the last days of the debate over Sessions were somewhat surprising.

While the issue of race had always hung over the debate, Sessions is well-liked personally by many senators. That made the stinging words all the more noteworthy — and raises questions about the ability of lawmakers to work together going forward.

March 19, 1986

According to the Washington Post, “Coretta Scott King, the widow of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., urged Congress in a letter to block the 1986 nomination of Jeff Sessions for federal judge, saying that allowing him to join the federal bench would ‘irreparably damage the work of my husband.’”

“In the letter, King writes that Sessions’s ascension to the federal bench ‘simply cannot be allowed to happen,’ arguing that as a U.S. attorney, the Alabama lawmaker pursued ‘politically-motivated voting fraud prosecutions’ and that he ‘lacks the temperament, fairness and judgment to be a federal judge.’ She said Sessions’s conduct in prosecuting civil rights leaders in a voting-fraud case ‘raises serious questions about his commitment to the protection of the voting rights of all American citizens.’” https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2017/01/10/read-the-letter-coretta-scott-king-wrote-opposing-sessionss-1986-federal-nomination/?utm_term=.dfbccea3ba10

Republicans vote to rebuke Elizabeth Warren, saying she impugned Sessions’s character By Paul Kane and Ed O'Keefe February 7 at 11:39 PM

“Senate Republicans passed a party-line rebuke Tuesday night of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) for a speech opposing attorney general nominee Jeff Sessions, striking down her words for impugning the Alabama senator’s character.

“In an extraordinarily rare move, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) interrupted Warren’s speech, in a near-empty chamber as debate on Sessions’s nomination heads toward a Wednesday evening vote, and said that she had breached Senate rules by reading past statements against Sessions from figures such as the late senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) and the late Coretta Scott King.”

[…]

The Senate voted, 49 to 43, strictly on party lines, to uphold the ruling that Warren violated Rule 19 of the Senate that says senators are not allowed to “directly or indirectly, by any form of words impute to another Senator or to other Senators any conduct or motive unworthy or unbecoming a Senator.” Pursuant to that rule, Warren was ordered to sit down and forbidden from speaking during the remainder of the debate on the nomination of Sessions.

Writer and author Joseph F. Steffen Jr., 57, died Fri. Jan. 27, 2017
By Jacques Kelly and Luke Broadwater, The Baltimore Sun, Feb. 1, 2017 http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/obituaries/bs-md-ob-joseph-steffen-20170201-story.html

Joseph F. Steffen Jr., a Republican political operative who enjoyed describing himself as the "Prince of Darkness," died of coronary disease Friday at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. The Dundalk resident was 57.

His daughter Jennifer Steffen, with whom he lived, said her father suffered two strokes several years ago.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Reisterstown, he was the son of Joseph F. Steffen Sr., a machinist, and Anne Steffen. He attended Sacred Heart School and was a 1977 Franklin High School graduate. He then did odd jobs before he began working as a speechwriter in Republican politics.

"He was noticed for an article he wrote in a Reisterstown newspaper, and went on to work for [conservative figures] Linda Chavez and Richard Viguerie," his daughter said. "On the basis of that initial article, he was noticed by the National Conservative Action Committee, and at age 23, he became a press secretary for it."

Mr. Steffen was best known for his work in the rough-and-tumble world of Maryland politics, including more than a decade working for former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.

Rob Lowe Burns President Obama for His Interviews with Youtube Stars and Twitter Roars in Approval

This is the president who won the Nobel Peace Prize and campaigned that he was going to solve all the conflicts of the world by talking to anyone and everyone…

Weeks later I am still laughing….

LOL On Jan. 22, 2015, Rob Lowe (@RobLowe) caused a Twitter uproar when he asked: "Hold up. Is it true that a woman who eats cereal out of a bathtub gets to meet with the President and the Prime Minister of Israel does not?"

Oh my - this won't do. I'm sure Bibi does.not.care.Really - Just saying...

Politico: Benjamin Netanyahu’s side strikes back

Benjamin Netanyahu’s side strikes back

Now comes the backlash to the Bibi backlash.

By Edward-Isaac Dovere and Jake Sherman

2/6/15

Now comes the backlash to the Bibi backlash.

Republican and conservative Jewish organizations are threatening shaming campaigns against Democrats who skip Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned speech to a joint meeting of Congress next month. Even talking about not showing, they say, is forsaking America’s relationship with Israel.

Joe Biden apparently isn't worried. A spokesperson for the vice president on Friday said Biden would not preside over the joint meeting because he'll be travelling abroad.

The furor around the speech, which Democrats say is forcing them to choose between loyalty to Israel and loyalty to their party, reflects a slow transformation. Though the overwhelming majority of American Jewish voters remain Democrats, Jewish Republicans have grown in numbers and influence. That’s a trend conservative Israeli politicians, led by Netanyahu, are seeking to use to their advantage—and a small number of well-funded right-leaning American Jews are eager to exploit.

Ten top reasons to vote Democrat

Ten top reasons to vote Democrat

LETTERMAN’S TOP 10 REASONS TO VOTE DEMOCRAT

#10. I vote Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry whatever I want. I’ve decided to marry my German Shepherd.

#9. I vote Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 4% on a gallon of gas are obscene, but the government taxing the same gallon at 15% isn’t.

#8. I vote Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.

#7. I vote Democrat because Freedom of Speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.

#6. I vote Democrat because I'm way too irresponsible to own a gun, and I know that my local police are all I need to protect me from murderers and thieves. I am also thankful that we have a 911 service that get police to your home in order to identify your body after a home invasion.

#5. I vote Democrat because I'm not concerned about millions of babies being aborted so long as we keep all death row inmates alive and comfy.

#4. I vote Democrat because I think illegal aliens have a right to free health care, education, and Social Security benefits, and we should take away Social Security from those who paid into it.

#3. I vote Democrat because I believe that businesses should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as the Democrat Party sees fit.

#2. I vote Democrat because I believe liberal judges need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit fringe kooks who would never get their agendas past the voters.

…And the #1 reason I vote Democrat is because I think it's better to pay $billions$ for oil to people who hate us, but not drill our own because it might upset some endangered beetle, gopher or fish here in America. We don't care about the beetles, gophers or fish in those other countries.

Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey won re-election on Tuesday, defeating his Democratic rival, State Senator Barbara Buono, by a crushing margin. The victory vaulted him to the front ranks of Republican presidential contenders.
In a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans by 700,000, Mr. Christie won decisively, making impressive inroads among younger voters, blacks, Hispanics and women – all groups that Republicans nationally have struggled to attract...

San Antonio Passes Far-Reaching Antidiscrimination Measure

San Antonio Passes Far-Reaching Antidiscrimination Measure

By MANNY FERNANDEZ Published: September 5, 2013

HOUSTON — Nearly 200 cities across the country have enacted ordinances in recent years that prohibit bias by municipal employees or in city contracts over someone’s race, sex, age, religion or sexual orientation. Houston, Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth are a few of the Texas cities that adopted such measures.

But in San Antonio, a nondiscrimination ordinance that includes protections for sexual orientation and gender identity turned into a divisive political battle this summer, the likes of which this liberal-leaning city of 1.4 million has rarely seen in recent decades.

The City Council passed the measure, 8 to 3, on Thursday, capping weeks of heated debate that exposed racial, religious and gay-and-straight divisions and drew the scorn of Republican leaders and candidates around the state who are just starting to position themselves for next spring’s primary elections.

The Texas attorney general, Greg Abbott, who has been running for governor since Gov. Rick Perry announced he was not seeking re-election, weighed in on the issue, expressing his opposition. The state agriculture commissioner, Todd Staples, who is running for lieutenant governor — and who as a state senator sponsored the constitutional amendment that passed in 2005 that defined marriage in Texas as between one man and one woman — also spoke out against it.

Mr. Conservative: Why My Liberal Neighbors Aren’t Speaking To Me Anymore

Mr. Conservative: Why My Liberal Neighbors Aren’t Speaking To Me Anymore

January 21, 2013

I recently asked my neighbors’ little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be President some day. Both of her parents, are liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her, ‘If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?’

She replied, ‘I’d give food and houses to all the homeless people.’

Her parents beamed with pride.

’Wow…what a worthy goal.’ I told her, ‘But you don’t have to wait until you’re President to do that! You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I’ll pay you $50. Then I’ll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house.‘

She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, ’ Why doesn’t the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50? ‘

I said, ‘Welcome to Conservatism.’ Her parents still aren’t speaking to me…

A story about a biker, US Marine, heroic acts and today’s liberal media

This pretty much sums up the media's approach to the news these days

A Harley biker is riding by the zoo in Louisiana when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion's cage.

Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents.

The biker jumps off his Harley, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch.

Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly.

A reporter has watched the whole event. The reporter addressing the Harley rider says, 'Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I've seen a man do in my whole life.'

The Harley rider replies, 'Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger and acted as I felt right.'

The reporter says, 'Well, I'll make sure this won't go unnoticed. I'm a journalist, and tomorrow's paper will have this story on the front page...

So, what do you do for a living and what political affiliation do you have?'

The biker replies, 'I'm a U.S. Marine and a Republican.'

The journalist leaves.

The following morning the biker buys the paper to see news of his actions, and reads, on the front page:

U.S. MARINE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH

That pretty much sums up the media's approach to the news these days...

Olympia Snowe: Why I’m leaving the Senate - The Washington Post: "By Olympia J. Snowe, Published: March 1

Olympia J. Snowe is a Republican senator from Maine.

Two truths are all too often overshadowed in today’s political discourse: Public service is a most honorable pursuit, and so is bipartisanship.

I have been immeasurably honored to serve the people of Maine for nearly 40 years in public office and for the past 17 years in the United States Senate. It was incredibly difficult to decide that I would not seek a fourth term in the Senate." ... http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/olympia-snowe-why-im-leaving-the-senate/2012/03/01/gIQApGYZlR_story.html?tid=pm_opinions_pop

Republican Bob Turner won in an upset Tuesday in a special congressional election, claiming a New York City seat that has been held by Democrats since the 1920s. Turner, a 70-year-old former cable TV executive with no experience in elected office, ran a conservative campaign against President Obama's handling of the economy and, in a district with a large Jewish vote, opposing the president's support of Palestinian statehood.
