24/7 Wall St.:The 10 Cities Where No One Wants to Drive By Alexander E.M. Hess and Thomas C. Frohlich February 6, 2014

For many Americans, there’s no escaping the stressful rush hour drive — but not for everybody. Many choose not to own a car. In fact, according to a recent report, more than 9% of U.S. households did not have a car in 2012, a higher figure than five years ago. In 21 of the nation’s 30 largest cities, households were also less likely to have a vehicle than just five years earlier.

According to a study by Michael Sivak, a research professor at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, the growth in households without a vehicle provides evidence that Americans are less dependent on cars than in the past. Sivak’s research also indicates that, per capita, Americans own fewer vehicles, drive fewer miles, and consume less fuel. While the number of households without a car rose nationwide, from 8.7% in 2007 to 9.2% in 2012, figures by city differ dramatically. In San Jose, just 5.8% of households did not have a car. In New York, 56.5% of households did not have a car.

6. Baltimore, MD
> Pct. of households without a vehicle: 31.2%
> Pct. commuting to work via public transportation: 19.2% (23rd most)
> Transit score: 56.9 (10th best)
> Population: 620,216 (26th largest)
The percentage of Baltimore households without a car rose from 29.3% in 2007 to 31.2% in 2012. One reason may be the quality of walking routes and public transportation in the city; Baltimore received some of the top marks in the nation for both walking and public transportation. The Maryland Transit Administration operates a number of services, including commuter buses and trains, as well as a more-than 15 mile-long subway. In 2012, more than 19% of commuters took public transportation to work, one of the higher percentages in the nation. There are also plans to build a new light-rail system, called the Red Line.

Removal of American flag from Woodbine traffic circle sparks patriotic rally

State highway decision riles neighbors, leads to large showing of troop support

As the sun began to set over western Howard County on Dec. 23, dozens of people standing around and driving through the traffic circle at Woodbine Road and Old Frederick Road in Woodbine gazed up toward the sky, their eyes focused on a massive, billowing American flag hanging above the circle from the long arm of a crane. Many had changed or tweaked their holiday plans to be at the circle. Those coincidently passing by in their cars honked their horns loudly and shouted out their windows in support.
A large sign next to the crane, up a small hill from the circle, read, "Welcome Home U.S. TROOPS, United Patriots of Maryland."
The event, a rally of sorts, had been organized earlier in the week by Rhonda Winkler and her family, neighbors and friends — dozens of whom were at the event — as a show of patriotism, unity and undiminished resolve to fly the stars and stripes at the circle, despite what they have been told by the State Highway Administration.
The impetus behind the event, and the group's creation of the nonprofit United Patriots of Maryland, was the removal of a much smaller flag Winkler's family had placed on the circle by a state road crew last week.. http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/howard/news/community/ph-ho-cf-flag-rally-1229-20111227,0,6354426.story

[Baltimore Brew] LaHood: why feds were unimpressed with Maryland's high-speed rail bid

Baltimore Brew has posted a new item, 'LaHood: why feds were unimpressed with
Maryland's high-speed rail bid'

A recent interview with Ray LaHood, secretary of the U.S. Department of
Transportation, sheds more light on why Maryland and several other Northeast
states with substantial rail passenger needs got so little of the $8 billion in
federal stimulus money recently awarded for high-speed-rail projects.

LaHood said in the Huffington Post that the Obama administration looked [...]

Red Maryland: Way to Avoid Maryland's Proposed EZ Pass Fee

Red Maryland: Way to Avoid Maryland's Proposed EZ Pass Fee

Tuesday, January 6, 2009

My wife called this to my attention the other day and we are less than pleased…

Ya know – this is nuts. Maryland should be encouraging the use of EZ Pass as it saves the state a great deal of money in personnel expenses and other assorted overhead with efficiency fueled by technology.

Way to Avoid Maryland's Proposed EZ Pass Fee

Despite the tough economic times, I knew Governor Martin O'Malley could never resist the urge to raise some form of tax/fee.

Bud may be on to something here.  If a day were to be picked in which “everyone” did NOT use their EZ Pass, the resulting traffic suggestion may wake some officials up.

Others have suggested getting an EZ Pass from New Jersey, which I am told does offer some sort of discount.  If anyone is aware of more information, perhaps they could share it with all of us.

Maryland seems to have a real affinity for running business out of the state.

With a 2010 re-election date looming, his window of opportunity would likely pass with the close of session in April. Low and behold, O'Malley found his golden parachute. Since an increasing number of motorists have discovered EZ Pass as a way to avoid toll delays, O'Malley now figures everyone will happily fork over an additional $18 a year for this supposed luxury.

Admittedly, I use EZ Pass more so for convenience than necessity. Therefore, I will continue to use the system. That said, I will return my current transponder to the Maryland MVA and order a new one through the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. As opposed to an $18/year fee, these guys only charge $3. Although it's just a small savings, I figure the $15 is better suited for my use than the state of Maryland's.

20070522 Governor O’Malley Calls for Inquiry Into Gasoline Prices

Governor O’Malley Calls for Inquiry Into Gasoline Prices

May 22, 2007

Press Release - Office of the Governor

Governor O'Malley Calls for National, Bi-Partisan Inquiry Into Gasoline Prices

Letter Asks for Investigation Into Rising Prices

ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 22, 2007) - Yesterday, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley joined with Governors from 21 other states to call for an investigation into escalating gasoline prices throughout the United States. Together, they signed and submitted a letter to the Senate and House of Representative leadership asking them to study the perennially high price of gasoline.

“It is difficult to understand how oil companies can be making record profits each quarter without making capital investments in refineries that would address refinery issues,” wrote the Governors. “Families and businesses across the nation are straining under these uncontrollable prices.”

The letter was directed to the Sen. Harry Reid - Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell - Senate Minority Leader, Speaker Nancy Pelosi - Speaker of the House, and John Boehner - House Minority Leader.
