The scammers are at it again. We are getting reports of a man named John calling from 443-345-8283. He says he is with the "foundation" and asked for donations to the fire service in Harford County.

When asked questions he abruptly hangs up.

No fire or EMS company/dept in Harford County solicits donations by telephone. Not one.

Please do not fall prey to this guy or anyone else who may try a scam like this.

Share this info with those who aren't on social media, especially the older population.

Feb. 7, 1936 MSP LODD: Maryland State Police Quartermaster Sergeant Wilbert V. Hunter died of exposure on 2/7/1936

Feb. 7, 1936 MSP LODD: Maryland State Police Quartermaster Sergeant Wilbert V. Hunter died of exposure on 2/7/1936 http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2017/02/feb-7-1936-msp-lodd-maryland-state.html

And Harford County Sheriff’s Deputies Patrick Dailey and Mark Logsdon were shot and killed on Feb. 10, 2016

Fortunately, throughout history, we have only lost one Maryland State Trooper in the month of February. On February 7th, we remember Maryland State Police Quartermaster Sergeant Wilbert V. Hunter who died of exposure on February 7, 1936. https://www.odmp.org/agency/2367-maryland-state-police-maryland

Heavenly Father. We ask for your healing graces for the friends, family, and colleagues of Harford County Sheriff’s Deputies Patrick Dailey and Mark Logsdon who were shot and killed last year on Feb. 10, 2016 – and Maryland State Police Quartermaster Sergeant Wilbert V. Hunter, who died of exposure on 2/7/1936. Amen.

I think of Sgt. Hunter when I complain about the cold and snow of February and how much I do not like the winter. It puts things in perspective.

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, “Quartermaster Sergeant Hunter died of exposure after falling through ice covering Tangier Sound. He was part of an expedition taking 2,000 pounds of food to stranded residents on Tangier Island during a blizzard. Sergeant Hunter (was 30-yrs old and) had served with the Maryland State Police for just under 8 years.” http://www.odmp.org/officer/reflections/6867-quartermaster-sergeant-wilbert-v-hunter

Time never diminishes respect and Harford County Sheriff’s Deputies Dailey and Logsdon, and Maryland State Police Sgt. Hunter will always be honored and revered. May they Rest In Peace.

The Officer Down Memorial Page reports that throughout history, in the United States, on Feb. 7, 79 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty. https://www.odmp.org/search/this_day_in_history/february/7

We lift them up into your loving arms. Hold them their family, friends, and colleagues in your heart and our prayers.

In your boundless compassion, console us who still mourn.

Remember our fallen servants. … Remember those who serve for our public safety and community.

We Pray and ask the Lord for the protection of our military personnel, law enforcement, firefighters and EMS personnel and their families. Keep us safe as we protect and serve. Amen ####

Carroll Co. Md. Sheriff Jim DeWees - A Letter from me to our president

Carroll Co. Md. Sheriff Jim DeWees - A Letter from me to our president

Facebook 9:01 a.m. February 13, 2016 https://www.facebook.com/sheriffjimdewees/

Dear President Obama:

In case you haven’t heard, eight American police officers over the past eight days have been killed in the line of duty. Two of these police officers were Harford County Sheriff’s Deputies that were gunned down at a Panera Restaurant just 50 miles from where you live. I’ve watched and listened intently for words of encouragement and sorrow to come from you, but haven’t heard or seen anything.

Conversely, just two weeks ago my governor, Larry Hogan, spent the better part of a week placing a call each day to one of my deputies that was involved in a severe traffic collision in Carroll County. He wasn’t satisfied with speaking to me in order to send his prayers and regards; he called every day after the collision until he spoke with my deputy’s wife. Governor Hogan also drove to Harford County the day after two deputies were slain to meet Sheriff Gahler and the men & women of his office to grieve with them. The governor is in the middle of the 2016 Legislative Session and is pretty busy, yet found time to call, visit, and pay his respects to me & my deputy, and the men & women of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.

I understand that you are a busy man and are being pulled in multiple directions every day of the week. But, when my president doesn’t take the time to openly recognize the sacrifices that brave men & women of law enforcement make each day to keep domestic peace, I’m disappointed! I suspect that if these same deputies walked in to a restaurant, and without provocation shot and killed an innocent man, you and your staff would quickly whisk their family away to Washington for a future speech to make an example of police officers nationwide.

For me Mr. President, it has nothing to do with Republican or Democrat; black or white, male or female; but, it has everything to do with leading or following. I’m not shocked that you haven’t openly reached out or acknowledged publically the recent rash of deaths in law enforcement, but I’m tremendously disappointed!

Mr. President, your silence about these events SPEAKS VOLUMES!!!!

PS: I'll be standing outside in the cold next week with my deputies for the funerals of the Harford Co deputies; I'll save you a spot next to me!

James T. DeWees

Two Deputies Murdered in Line of Duty

[February 11, 2016, Abindgon, MD]

On Wednesday, February 10, 2016, Senior Deputy Patrick Dailey and Senior Deputy Mark Logsdon of the Harford County Sheriff's Office were killed in the line of duty while faithfully serving the citizens of Harford County.

At approximately 11:40 a.m., the Harford County Department of Emergency Services received a call from a citizen concerning a suspicious circumstance, indicating a wanted person was in the Panera Bread restaurant located in the 3400 block of Merchant Drive in Abingdon, Maryland.

At approximately 11:46 a.m., Deputies were dispatched to the location in an attempt to locate the wanted subject who had been described by the caller.
The investigation has revealed that Senior Deputy Dailey arrived at the Panera Bread a short time after the initial dispatch, entered and approached a subject meeting the description who was seated alone at a table.  While speaking to Senior Deputy Dailey, the suspect, without warning, produced a handgun and shot Senior Deputy Dailey in the head.  The suspect then exited the Panera Bread and ran in the direction of Parkview at Box Hill, a senior living apartment center.

Within moments, a second Deputy arrived at the restaurant and located Senior Deputy Dailey with a gunshot wound.

Shortly after 12:00 p.m., Senior Deputy Logsdon, who had arrived on scene, exited his vehicle and, along with additional Harford County deputies, located the suspect seated in the front seat of a vehicle in the parking lot at Parkview at Box Hill.  Upon contact by Senior Deputy Logsdon, the suspect fired multiple rounds at the Deputy, mortally wounding him.

Deputies within close proximity, including Senior Deputy Logsdon, returned fire, striking and killing the suspect.  He has subsequently been identified as David Brian Evans (W/M, 12/25/47) who has no fixed address.  The loaded handgun used to murder Senior Deputy Logsdon and Senior Deputy Dailey was recovered from the suspect.

Lifesaving efforts were immediately administered to both Senior Deputy Dailey and Senior Deputy Logsdon by Sheriff's Deputies on scene.

Abingdon and Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Departments responded and continued their life saving efforts.

Senior Deputy Dailey was transported from the scene by Maryland State Police helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Senior Deputy Logsdon was transported to the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center.  Both succumbed to their injuries.

Investigators from the Harford County Sheriff's Office are continuing to work tirelessly to reconstruct the events surrounding these senseless murders.
Senior Deputy Dailey had served with the Harford County Sheriff's Office for 30 years and was assigned to the Court Services Division.  He was also a lifelong member of the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company.  He is survived by his two children, girlfriend and mother.

Senior Deputy Logsdon had served with the Harford County Sheriff's Office for 16 years and was assigned to the Community Services Division.  He is survived by his wife, three children, and parents.

Both Senior Deputy Dailey and Senior Deputy Logsdon served in the military.  Senior Deputy Dailey served in the Marines; Senior Deputy Logsdon served in the United States Army.

Sheriff Jeffrey R. Gahler and the members of the Harford County Sheriff's Office would like to express our sincerest gratitude to the Maryland State Police, Maryland Transportation Authority Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Bel Air Police Department, Aberdeen Police Department, Havre de Grace Police Department, Baltimore County Police Department, the State Highway Administration, Harford County Department of Emergency Services, and all the local fire companies who assisted yesterday.  Their assistance greatly helped our agency get through yesterday's tragic events.

State Police Arrest Queen Anne's County school principal for sex offenses

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 15, 2009

STATE POLICE ARREST SCHOOL PRINCIPAL FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES

(Galena, MD) - The Maryland State Police have arrested a Queen Anne's County school principal today on three counts of illegal sexual conduct involving a 14-year-old girl.

The accused is identified as Lowell S. Litton, Jr., 39, of the 400-block of Dudley Corner Road in Sudlersville, Maryland. He is charged with third degree sex offense, fourth degree sex offense, and sex abuse of a minor. If convicted, Litton faces up to 36 years imprisonment.

The investigation began yesterday evening when state police at the Centreville Barrack received a complaint of possible inappropriate sexual relations involving a juvenile victim. Information received revealed an ongoing and inappropriate sexual relationship between a 39-year-old man and a 14-year-old female victim. Subsequently, state police criminal investigators immediately initiated an investigation into the allegations.

Investigators learned the juvenile victim had become acquainted with Litton about four years ago. Further information revealed the relationship consisted of several sexually oriented incidents in various locations throughout Maryland and Delaware.

Police also learned that Litton is employed as the principal of Eastern Shore Junior Academy in Sudlersville, Maryland. It is the policy of the Maryland State Police to not identify victims of sex crimes. The juvenile victim will remain anonymous.

Litton was asked to come to Centreville barracks where he was interviewed and subsequently arrested without incident. He is currently being held on a $25,000 bond at Kent County Detention Center.

Police executed a search warrant at Litton’s Queen Anne’s County residence today, seizing his computer and several printed documents relevant to the investigation. The seized computer will be sent to the State Police Forensics Laboratory and the Computer Crimes Unit for examination.

Because this investigation involves a principal of a school, the State Police coordinated efforts with the Department of Education, the Queen Anne’s County Department of Social Services, and the Kent County State’s Attorney Office.

Although there is no indication at this time of other victims, police urge anyone who may have information relevant to this case to please contact state police investigators at Centreville Barracks at 410-758-1101.

The investigation continues

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 13, 2009

UPDATED: 1/13/09 AT 3: 30 P.M. - WANTED MAN AND PASSENGER KILLED IN CRASH AFTER FLEEING FROM TROOPER

(Havre de Grace, MD) Troopers recovered thousands of dollars worth of cocaine from the trunk of a car in which two men were killed early this morning after the driver fled from a trooper trying to stop him on I-95 in Harford County.

The driver was identified as Charles L. Quinones, Jr., 37, of the 5200-block of Cromarty Road, Baltimore, Md. During the crash investigation, troopers found Quinones was wanted on a felony warrant in Baltimore County for failure to appear for a charge of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. Troopers also found his driver’s license had been suspended in Maryland for more than one year.

The passenger was identified as Willie S. Robertson, 74, of the 1000-block of Jeanette Way, Bel Air, Md. The 2005 Mercury Sable Quinones was driving was registered to Robertson.

Shortly after 5:00 a.m. today, a trooper assigned to the State Police Pro-Active Criminal Enforcement Team was working patrol on southbound I-95 south of Rt. 272 when he observed the Mercury headed in the same direction. The trooper saw that the rear license plate was obstructed and determined the vehicle was traveling 72 mph in a posted 65 mph zone.

Approaching the Rt. 222 interchange, the trooper activated his lights and siren on his marked Ford Expedition State Police patrol vehicle. The driver of the Mercury, later identified as Quinones, signaled he was pulling over, then quickly swerved to the fast lane and accelerated.

Quinones continued south on I-95 driving aggressively as he weaved between vehicles. The pursuing trooper was traveling at 90 mph, but was unable to keep up with the fleeing Mercury. The trooper was about one-half mile behind as he approached the Rt. 155 exit and saw the Mercury swerve across several lanes, cut off a tractor trailer, and take the ramp to westbound Rt. 155.

The trooper took the exit ramp and, near the end of the ramp about one-quarter mile off I-95, found the Mercury had gone off the eastbound side of Rt. 155 and crashed into trees not far from the shoulder of the road. The trooper and other responding troopers attempted to render aid to the two men and called for a State Police helicopter and an ambulance. Medics who arrived at the scene pronounced the men dead.

Witnesses told troopers the driver of the Mercury was passing cars on the right as it came off Rt. 155 at a high rate of speed. They said the driver then lost control, swerved across the highway and crashed.

A police search of the heavily damaged car found six and one-half ounces of powder cocaine in plastic bags in the trunk. State Police drug investigators estimate the cocaine could have been sold on the street for more than $18,000.

The crash is being investigated by the Maryland State Police CRASH Team. A detailed crash reconstruction will be conducted. The investigation is continuing.

Dog attacks horses, fatally injures one

There are many aspects of this sad story that are outrageous. Pick our own: The frequency of pit bulls involved in vicious attacks; or the apparent lack of responsibility on the part of the dog owner; and/or the apparent lack of consequences for the dog’s owner…

Pit bull's owner previously fined for unsecured animal

A young male pit bull attacked several horses pastured at a northern Harford County farm Wednesday, injuring one so severely that it was put down. Another horse might not survive its injuries and a third has nearly 50 stitches on its face, officials said.

Harford County animal control officials ordered the dog destroyed yesterday.

"Based on information from witnesses and past history, this dog was considered potentially dangerous and had to be destroyed for the safety of this neighborhood," said Pamela Arney, Harford's animal control officer.

The dog was often seen running loose in the Forest Hill area near the Grier Nursery Road farm. Twice since March, Jonathan Russo, the dog's owner and the farm's neighbor, had been fined $60 for not securing the animal. Russo, who could not be reached for comment yesterday, received another $95 fine Thursday.

The dog grabbed a 6-year-old Welsh pony by the nose and hung on, despite the horse's efforts to shake it off. It took 45 stitches to close the pony's bite wounds. The dog then chased a 2-year-old Chincoteague pony and tore at its left hind leg so deeply that its survival remains in question. A 350-pound yearling sustained a fatal injury when the dog grabbed its foreleg and pulled it down. The deep bites exposed joints and tendons on the Welsh pony cross and its leg was broken.

"I know its owner has rights, but along with that comes responsibility," Klein said. "This dog was unpredictable and vicious."

Wilson, the horses' owner, credited Klein with saving the remaining animals. She has mounting veterinary bills, already in excess of $1,500 and has lost a horse worth about $7,000, she said. As of yesterday, Wilson said that Russo had not contacted her.
