Battle over unemployment benefits will consume start of 2014

By Alexander Bolton

Senate Democratic leaders feel cautiously optimistic they have the 60 votes they need to advance unemployment benefits legislation on Monday, but that marks only the start of the congressional battle.
Even if the legislation passes the Senate, it faces an uphill road in the House. Advocates for extended benefits say the fight could play out between the chambers for weeks.

Yesterday, after a conflict-fraught deliberation process, the Obama Administration awarded the Light Air Support (LAS) contract to Brazilian-based Embraer over Beechcraft; a Wichita Kansas based company with a long history of  supplying the U.S. military with aircraft.  Had Beechcraft been granted the  contract, the company expected  to add or sustain 1,400 jobs in the U.S.  The Embraer plane, on the  other hand, will be primarily built in Brazil, with only  about 50 assembly jobs in the U.S.... Breaking: Obama Sends 1,400 Manufacturing Jobs & Sensitive Technology to Brazil

The White House has proposed a modest half-percent pay raise for civilian federal employees beginning next year — a move that would affect thousands of Maryland workers.
If the across-the-board raise is approved by Congress, it would end a two-year-old salary freeze imposed as part of belt-tightening in Washington.
