New Jersey's new Republican governor, Chris Christie, is creating a commission that will recommend what state government functions could be done better - and cheaper - by the private sector. The commission will examine hundreds of regulatory bodies to see which might be closed or privatized as part of the governor's plan to reduce an $11 billion deficit left by his Democratic predecessor, Jon Corzine. Rielle Hunter’s revealing interview in the new issue of GQ isn’t the only thing raising concern. The baby mama of disgraced politician John Edwards is apparently not pleased with how several suggestive photographs turned out in the magazine spread.
On “The View” Monday morning, co-host Barbara Walters said she had already spoken to Hunter, who had “cried for two hours” after seeing what she called “repulsive” images.

Republicans have seen the ‘Slaughter solution’ before
By Jon Ward - The Daily Caller 03/16/10 at 9:21 PM
Republicans made major hay Tuesday out of the “news” (it was reported by the Washington Post today after several days of reporting by The Daily Caller and other news organizations) that Democrats may use the “Slaughter solution” to pass the health care bill.
For an in depth explanation of why Democrats are doing it, click here.
The plan to “deem” the Senate bill passed when the reconciliation bill passes does make Democrats look sneaky, but at least one Republican Tuesday said the use of a “self-executing rule” was not actually lawful.
Rep. Mike Pence, Indiana Republican, said the Democrats’ plan “tramples on the Constitution.”
“I’ve understood this ever since I saw School House Rock,” Pence said, according to Politico.
But Pence voted in favor of a “self-executing rule,” the same procedure that will make the “Slaughter solution” possible, three times when Republicans controlled the House, according to a list of the votes provided by House Democrats to The Daily Caller. At the dawn of this New Year, many expected much more in the way of fireworks from the current 427th session of the Maryland General Assembly. It is an election year and the state is entering another fiscal year of huge budget deficits.

Anthony Troy Soligny, 33, of New Windsor, Carroll County, Maryland, is accused of attacking his wife with a hammer on March 2, 2010

Maryland State Police say Soligny allegedly assaulted his wife with a steel and rubber hammer, which police said they have taken into evidence.

At about 11:30 p.m. March 2, 2010, State Police at the Westminster Barracks received a 911 call from the victim, who had gone to a neighbor’s home to call police.

Troopers found the victim had sustained what appeared to be severe blunt force trauma injuries to her head. She was transported by ambulance to the Carroll Hospital Center, then later to Shock Trauma Center.

After the alleged assault on March 2, 2010, Soligny fled the state. He was arrested the next day, March 3, 2010, while traveling on I-85 just outside of Lavonia Georgia. He was subsequently locked up in Franklin County Detention Center in Carnesville, Ga., until Maryland State Police returned him to Carroll County.

On Tuesday, March 9, 2010, Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley said Soligny arrived at the Carroll County Detention Center at 5:45 p.m. He was flown back to Maryland by troopers on a State Police plane. “There were no problems reported during transport.”

On March 11, 2010, a judge ordered the defendant held without bail. It was further ordered that Soligny have no contact with the alleged victim, (his wife) or “the minor children,” and that Soligny be given a psychiatric evaluation.

Maryland Senate GOP Slate: O’Malley Created $363 Million Budget Gap Thru High Income Surtax
O’Malley Created $363 Million Budget Gap Thru High Income Surtax
Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 11:18am
http://www.facebook.com/notes/maryland-senate-gop-slate/omalley-created-363-million-budget-gap-thru-high-income-surtax/397652710139
Final tax data from 2008 now proves what many predicted but had been strenuously denied by Democrats in Annapolis: Maryland’s high income earners are voting with their feet.
In calling a special session for the purpose of passing an historic tax increase less than a year after his election, Governor Martin O’Malley changed Maryland’s personal income tax from a flat rate to a graduated system with a surcharge on high income earners. During this 2007 special session, Republican Senators opposed these tax increases and forewarned that the net result would be revenue losses as this mobile segment of the population relocated their primary residences.
Wall Street Journal editorial writers agreed in a May 2009 opinion entitled “Soak the Rich – Lose the Rich” that described how the misguided budget policy of the O’Malley Administration would lead to outward migration of the very segment of the population that a state wants to keep for a healthy, progressive economy. In response, Democrats in Annapolis produced their own analysis attributing the loss of high income tax filers to the normal slack-off of annual returns.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,313230,00.html

Wednesday, November 28, 2007 By Dave Mosher

Humans somehow made their way into the Americas from distant lands, but knowing precisely when and from where they made the journey are matters of heated scientific debate.

New genetic evidence, however, backs up the theory of a chilly northwestern arrival to North America from Siberia about 12,000 years ago, via a temporary land bridge spanning the Bering Strait.

The findings further challenge an alternative idea that humans trickled into both North and South America via open-sea voyages 30,000 years in the past.

Investigating the holiday's most tabooed treat by Jordan Bartel

http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/articles/2007/11/29/features/encore/columns/jordan_bartel/bartel865.txt

By Jordan Bartel, Times Staff Writer Thursday, November 29, 2007

I've never had fruitcake and lately I was wondering why.

It's been almost ingrained in my mind that I shouldn't try fruitcake or like fruitcake. It's like some kind of holiday taboo treat. You have to keep it on the downlow if you like it and it's popular to make fun of it.

BBC: The legend of Led Zeppelin

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6989929.stm

Wednesday, 12 September 2007

Led Zeppelin, who reformed for a one-off concert at London's O2 arena, were one of the most influential bands of the 20th Century.

Many say Led Zeppelin invented heavy metal, and their sound wafted out of thousands of guitar shops worldwide during the 1970s.

Budding guitarists world try out their skills on Stairway to Heaven - but that is only the tip of the Led Zeppelin story.

Many critics loathed them, but for a generation of fans, their complex sounds and love of mythology gave them an aura which remains undimmed today.

Led Zeppelin split in 1980 and reunions have been rare. But the huge scramble for tickets for their London gig shows they still have a large fanbase. Just what lies behind the Led Zeppelin legend?

IN THE BEGINNING...

Led Zeppelin formed from the ashes of 1960s band The Yardbirds, the one-time home of Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck. Guitarist Jimmy Page joined the group for their final album and stayed with the band as it disintegrated in 1968.

County commissioners to hold panel on waste recommendations By Carrie Ann Knauer, Times Staff Writer Monday, December 10, 2007

Carroll County’s Board of Commissioners has yet to debate among themselves whether they want to go forward with a waste-to-energy incinerator, but they may be watching a debate on the positives and negatives of the technology Thursday.

The commissioners heard two proposals with differing visions of how the county should tackle trash in November, and have been waiting for more information before deciding which plan to go forward with, said Cindy Parr, county director of administrative services.

On Thursday, members of the EAC will be at the commissioners’ meeting to represent their position, and Public Works staff, and representatives from the Northeast Maryland Waste Disposal Authority and Maryland Environmental Services will explain their perspectives.

The plan is to have an interactive discussion, Parr said, where the commissioners can ask their unanswered questions and hear facts and opinions from both sides.

Shortfalls mean budget cuts

Carroll County Times Editorial for Sunday, December 9, 2007 Tuesday, December 11, 2007

County leaders lamenting a reduction of state funding need to look for ways to make up the difference with existing revenue rather than place any additional tax burden on residents who already are facing higher bills.

Ted Zaleski, the county's director of management and budget, told the commissioners last week that Carroll will see about $8.5 million less from the state because of changes enacted during the recent special session. Other state level cuts could result in an additional $6 million reduction.

Mount Airy revels in visit from Bush

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007 by Kevin Dayhoff

Shortly after meeting with President George Bush at Calvary United Methodist Church in Mount Airy last Friday, Rebecca Mink reflected on what her group needs in their continuing fight against AIDS and HIV in southeast Africa.

Among other things, she noted that the group recently had to replace its car -- it seems their old car was involved in an accident in Africa in which an elephant sat on the vehicle, demolishing it.

On Friday, the other symbol of the Republican Party -- President Bush -- was kinder to Mink and others who have reached out to Namibia in the fight against AI... [Read full story]
