Baltimore & Mayor Dixon Are Targets Of Hoax
The mayor and some journalists are mad at a man who used Baltimore to take a satirical look at the crime in England.
As Mike Schuh reports, the city is now looking at taking legal action.
Last week, an English politician compared a crime-ridden city in England with the Baltimore seen in the TV show, "The Wire."
It appeared Mayor Sheila Dixon struck back via her city webpage Thursday. The Baltimore Sun and two leading British newspapers, The Guardian and The Independent, published her quote.

Sophia Litrenta raised $2,000 for the city's Mounted Police Patrol.

A tight city budget is threatening the historic Baltimore Police Mounted Patrol Unit, which needs $150,000 to stay open.
At the crack of dawn Thursday morning, Mike Schuh met with Police Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld to give an exclusive look at how a 9-year-old girl stepped up to help.
Thursday will be a day third grader Sophia Litrenta will always remember. But it's what she's done that will be remembered by many.
Sophia set up a lemonade stand to raise money for Baltimore City's Mounted Police.
[…]
Sophia took in more than $2,000 in just two hours at her lemonade stand.
[…]
The Mounted Patrol Unit is the longest continuously-running unit in the entire country. It has been in action since 1888.
Sophia's parents say they will continue to collect money and turn all the donations over to police.

Mike Schuh and the Jefferson Airplane: An ongoing investigation
The mystery remains – Schuh and the Jefferson Airplane: An ongoing investigation.
January 22, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff
Mike Schuh, Jefferson Airplane and the Surrealistic Pillow album.
Although Mr. Schuh would have us believe that he graduated from Camel High School, in Illinois in 1979, our in-depth investigation reveals that he did, indeed, play with Jefferson Airplane in the 1960s.
(Coordinating and reconciling these disparate facts remains elusive. Of course, this could all be the manifestation of an over-imaginative writer on his one day off?)
Nevertheless, witness, proof-positive, that Mr. Schuh does appear on the album cover of the Jefferson Airplane February 1967 release of “Surrealistic Pillow.”
This was shortly after Grace Slick had joined the band in 1966. Numerous reports that Mr. Schuh was dating Ms. Slick at the time remain unconfirmed.
Yet, notice her smile as she stands beside Mr. Schuh on the album cover photo…
Perhaps, after all these years, Mr. Schuh, may finally want to comment?
Of course, another mystery that we may want Mr. Schuh to help us out with is whether it is true, or not, that Jerry Garcia played on the album?
Two of the more famous cuts off the album were “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love.”
However, three of the other cuts off the album, of which I have always liked; were “Embryonic Journey,” and Plastic Fantastic Lover,” and “How Do You Feel.”
It was always rumored that Marty Balin actually did not write “Plastic Fantastic Lover.” That it was actually written about Mr. Schuh and was indeed, written by Ms. Slick. Or at least inspired by a conversation with Ms. Slick in which she was elaborating on her alleged relationship with Mr. Schuh.
One can only wonder if that is true – or not. Only Mr. Schuh can help us out; and so far, he has remained silent. A point for which we can only admire Mr. Schuh – a man of integrity - he does not kiss and tell.
If I recall correctly, on a number of occasions, when Mr. Schuh interviewed me, in my all-too-distant-now, former life as an elected official; Mr. Schuh was humming “White Rabbit,” as he approached.
Could this be coincidence or yet another indication that Mr. Schuh does indeed, harbor a former secret life as a rock star, long before he became a star journalist with WJZ TV Channel 13, in Baltimore, Maryland.
Inquiring minds want to know.

Happy Valentine’s Day
Around lunchtime, when I took the picture above, I got a phone call from WJZ reporter Mike Schuh[1]. He was in Westminster tracking down a snow story.
For twenty years as an elected official, I got to work with many great journalists from the print, radio, and TV media. Mike Schuh is one of the best of the best. Always pre-occupied with getting it right and reporting relevant and community-oriented news – he is “real people.”
For more on Mr. Schuh – go here. And be sure to read his “A Bakers Dozen of Sensible Schuh's.”
Later – I checked in on how Mr. Schuh was making-out getting the story in Westminster. I was at Southernmost Point at the time… I’ll post that picture separately…

Be a good employee.
Don't whine.
Pretend you are a freelancer -- like you must impress the bosses every day or you won't be able to afford food.
Surprise the producers. Give them more than they asked for in less time.
Work hard on the little story and the boss will give you the big ones.
Keep your mind on the story, not on the station gossip. Spend at least 5-10 minutes exchanging ideas about the story on the way to the story. Good ideas snowball.
Communicate expectations, communicate needs, communicate wants.
What do I have? What do I need?
On the ride home, go through the sequences about what will work where.
Offer solutions, not just problems.
Stand up straight.
Eat your vegetables.
Wear glasses if you need them.
