Say NO to phone books Updated – July 9, 2013 http://tinyurl.com/mpt6xcz

What will it take to stop the publishers of “yellowbook” and phone directories to stop littering my front yard with its unwanted phone directory delivery?

Getting junk mail-spammers to stop delivering unwanted mail, marketing and promotional materials is so incredible hard…

I just had to go out in my front yard and remove a large piece of trash. Guess what, it was a phone directory.

I have called, sent letters, faxed letters, and e-mailed various companies for quite a number of years to get them to stop littering my yard with trash and yet the problem continues.

On September 13, 2012, I registered with www.yellowpagesoptout.com to stop delivery of the unwanted phone directories, including the Westminster Carroll County directory that I subsequently received on March 14, 2013; and the Verizon Westminster 2013 – 2014 business book 032 840, I had discarded in front driveway on July 8, 2013.

I received the phone directories on July 8, 2013 and March 14, 2013, in spite of the fact that on September 13, 2012; I had opted-out of receiving any directories on www.yellowpagesoptout.com.

At that time I received an e-mail which assured me, “The National Yellow Pages Opt-Out Site received your request on September 13, 2012 at 12:38 pm.

“Your selection:  - No copies of Reisterstown – Ziplocal;  - No copies of Westminster-Carroll – Yellowbook;  - No copies of Baltimore Gr(Y)(B) – SuperMedia;  - No copies of Hanover Plus - Dex One;  - No copies of Carroll County-PATUX - Patuxent Directories;  - No copies of Hanover C - Dex One;  - No copies of Westminster – SuperMedia, Will be sent to your address…”

Since I registered, I have read various media sources that have suggested that www.yellowpagesoptout.com is a ruse and obfuscation for the purposes of thwarting legislation to ban the irritating and frustrating littering and waste that occurs when the unwanted and unsolicited phone directories are distributed willy-nilly and haphazardly throughout communities.

All too often the directories are left unclaimed and end-up in the storm water management system, clogging-up drains, storm gutters, fields, yards, streets and highways.

I have also noticed that many paper recyclers specifically prohibit receiving phone directories. I’m not sure why.

As much as I dislike nanny-state government; I almost wish the city would pass an ordinance prohibiting the practice of distributing unwanted and unsolicited trash on properties throughout the city.

In recent years, much of the telecommunications industry has earned a well-deserved reputation for boorish behavior, mismanagement – as in too big to manage, predatory business and marketing practices, poor communications services and even worse customer service. The unwanted and unsolicited phone directories which periodically litter my front yard are the icing on the cake.

I would like for the phone companies to please stop all deliveries of all directories. The most recent unwanted directory only made it in my house long enough to double-check the opt-out information. It will now immediately go into the recycling bin. I cannot just drive by your house and throw unwanted materials on your property.

Please stop.

You know, I cannot just drive by the homes of the folks involved with “yellowbook” and throw unwanted materials on their property. I would be arrested.

I wish the phone directory publishers would stop throwing trash throughout the community. It accumulates in the roadways, on sidewalks and the gutters, on private property and public parks. It is wrong.

Thank you for your time.
