Dayhoff Time Flies: Ocean City - Down the ocean, hon.

Dayhoff Time Flies: Ocean City - Down the ocean, hon.

Sunday, June 30, 2019 by Kevin E. Dayhoff

This year I enjoyed the summer solstice, Friday, June 21, by doing a 2.25-mile run on the boardwalk in Ocean City. According to the Washington Post, “The summer solstice is … our longest day and shortest night of the year, and the first day of astronomical summer in Earth’s Northern Hemisphere… In Washington, the sun (was) up for 14 hours and 54 minutes on June 21, rising in the northeastern sky (at) 5:43 a.m. and setting in the northwest at 8:37 p.m. (For perspective, that’s about 5½ hours more daylight than seen on the winter solstice in December.)”

I could not think of a better way to spend the longest day of the year than to spend it in Ocean City “down the ocean, hon.”

Some of my fondest childhood memories include leisurely vacations on the Chesapeake Bay, explorations throughout the Eastern Shore and walking on the boardwalk in Ocean City. For some reason French fries, pizza and ice cream, always taste better when it is mixed with an ocean salt breeze, walking the boardwalk, while fighting off the seagulls.

1931 Model A Ford

Caroline and I visited the vendor's booths at the #MSFA 2017 Maryland State Firemen's Association Convention, but after some thought and consideration we have decided that we want the Westminster Fire Dept. to buy the 1931 Model A Ford, for its next piece of equipment. Just saying. Monday, June 19, 2017.

For dinner on Wed., on our eating tour of Ocean City Md., we ate at Huggins #MSFA2017

For dinner on Wed., on our eating tour of Ocean City Md., we ate at Huggins Crab House www.higginscrabhouse.com at 31st St. 410-289-2581

We choose to eat outside on the rooftop, which worked out well because it gave us a great view of the sunset.

I ordered the Seafood Pasta, which includes over ½ pound of shrimp, scallops, clams, and mussels sauteed, and served with a choice of Alfredo or marinara sauce $25.99.

Caroline ordered Seafood Tacos, with Mahi Mahi. It included two tacos with a fresh vegetable blend that has been infused with a special Asian sauce. $15.49.

Our dinners were wonderful. The service was great. The restaurant was nicely appointed and decorated and quite appealing.

If you go, ask for our server, Sherwood, he was friendly and very good. We liked him.

Or ask for Emily Mitrovich. Emily is a Winter's Mill High School graduate from Westminster, who recently graduated from Salisbury University. She has a teacher's certificate in early childhood education and is currently looking for work in Carroll and Baltimore County public schools. Of course we encouraged her to to come back to Carroll County.

It is a small world, after talking with Emily, she was able to recall that she came to the Westminster mayor's office to interview me when she was in the third grade. I remember it well. What fun

We ate at The Dough Rollers at 41st Street and the Coastal Highway #MSFA2017

We ate at The Dough Rollers at 41st Street and the Coastal Highway - right next to the OC Convention Center,  after the memorial service.

It was nice to sit down for a dinner and the place was very pleasant - almost like a country restaurant.

Our servers were really nice, the food was not over-priced, and we both enjoyed our dinner. www.DoughRollerRestaurants.com Sunday, June 18, 2017. #MSFA2017

#MSFA2017

We are excited to bring this packet of information to you about the upcoming 125th Annual Convention and Conference of the Maryland State Firemen’s Association (MSFA) and the Ladies Auxiliary. The 125th Celebration has been taking place all year long throughout the Great State of Maryland and will climax with the Convention in Ocean City, Maryland, on Saturday, June 17, 2017 and continue through Friday, June 23, 2017. This year the Convention Committee has been working extremely hard to create more family participation activities as a part of the week-long schedule of events. We encourage you to bring the family to the beach and experience a unique Ocean City Family Memory.

We hope that you take advantage of the many opportunities for informative presentations, networking with your peers from around the state, getting additional training and education by attending one of the many conference seminars offered, and getting hands-on-opportunities to view new product/technology at our two exhibit halls. In addition, take some time to attend our Sunday Joint Memorial Service and our Awards Presentation on Tuesday morning as we recognize the achievement, accomplishments, and dedication of many departments and individuals within the MSFA and the Ladies Auxiliary. Look for events marked “NEW” to see what has been added or changed.

It is important that you take some time to look over the entire convention and conference schedule to make sure you do not miss anything. The convention committee is committed in bringing you the best annual gathering possible. We appreciate your comments and feedback about the week’s activities, and will be circulating a convention and conference survey again this year. The story behind the Sacramento Rte 50 Ocean City signs

Two Coasts, Two Cities, Two Signs: The Story Behind The ‘Ocean City MD 3073’ Sign - Melody Stone, Friday, May 6, 2016 | Sacramento, CA http://www.capradio.org/72367

Motorists traveling on 50 East in Sacramento may be familiar with this perfectly normal-looking mileage sign — on first glance, it’s like every other mileage sign along California highways listing the cities you’ll be passing with the number of miles to go.

But on second glance, this sign gives pause — Placerville is about an hour away, and South Lake Tahoe double that, depending on traffic. But why does far-off Ocean City, Maryland merit a mention?

The simple fact is that US 50 paves 3,000-plus miles from Ocean City, Maryland to Sacramento, California, but there’s more to the story.

In the 1980s John R. Cropper, Jr. worked as the head of statewide highway maintenance for Caltrans. Cropper, now 92, was the man who instigated the sign listing Ocean City, MD as 3073 down the road.
