Debate rages over the need for a better Marine sniper rifle By James K. Sanborn, June 17, 2015

Debate rages over the need for a better Marine sniper rifle By James K. Sanborn, Staff writer June 17, 2015 http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2015/06/debate-rages-over-need-for-better.html

A smoldering debate over the need for a more powerful sniper rifle for Marines is once again ablaze. http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/story/military/tech/2015/06/17/debate-rages-over-marine-corps-sniper-rifles/28811495/

The Army’s M2010 Enhanced Sniper Rifle has a range of about 1,300 yards. A new story by the Washington Post has reignited the debate over the Corps’ needs for new sniper rifles. - Ms. Andricka Thomas/ATEC

++++++++++++++++++++++

A recent story by the Washington Post has generated renewed controversy among Marines who say that some snipers have been outgunned on deployments, taking fire from targets they can see, but not shoot. While the Marine Corps' M40 is undeniably rugged and accurate, its .308 cartridge is unreliable beyond half a mile.

The story compares the Corps' rifle to the Chinese M99, which can reach targets twice as far away. The British and U.S. Special Operations Command also have sniper rifles with better firepower that can reach nearly a mile. And the Army's M2010 can reach targets about 1,300 yards away.

Marines told the Post that having the best training doesn't matter if their rifles and cartridges are subpar. Some said they fear better weapons can reach the hands of their enemies, including Islamic State militants.

Marine snipers have long been frustrated with the Corps' Vietnam-era M40s and .308 Winchester cartridge. In 2005, Marines operating in Iraq were calling on the Corps to develop a sniper rifle that had a range of more than 1,600 yards, nearly twice that of the M40.

'Guns Kept People Alive' During The Civil Rights Movement | WAMU 88.5 - American University Radio

'Guns Kept People Alive' During The Civil Rights Movement | WAMU 88.5 - American University Radio:

June 5, 2014

"This year marks the 50th anniversary of many pivotal events in the civil rights movement, and to commemorate "Freedom Summer," Tell Me More is diving into books that explore that theme.

One of the cornerstones of the civil rights movement was non-violent resistance. During lunch counter sit-ins and protest marches Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders instructed participants not to take up arms. Instead, when violence erupted or force was used to disrupt their activities, people would non-violently resist attempts by law enforcement to end the protest.

But this passive resistance did not necessarily mean an unwillingness to use force to protect themselves from violence in other circumstances.

This hiding in plain sight story is recounted to NPR's Michel Martin by author, professor and former Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee field secretary Charles E. Cobb Jr. in his new book, This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed: How Guns Made the Civil Rights Movement Possible."

Justice to count feds' guns By Tim Devaney

News from The Hill

Justice to count feds' guns By Tim Devaney

The Justice Department is updating a report on how many guns the federal government has.

It will be the first time Justice has addressed the topic in six years, and it comes as conservative and libertarian complaints about an excessively gun-happy government have intensified.

The issue was central to the recent controversy generated by a stand-off between right-wing rancher Cliven Bundy and agents from the Bureau of Land Management in Nevada.

O'Malley's Gun Bill passes out of Committee - Heads to House Floor

Defending the Second Amendment in Maryland
Dear Defenders of Liberty:

SB 281 was voted out of Committee last night by a  27/ 18 vote.

03-29-2013 22:04:26 PM
Today the joint committee of Judiciary and Health and Govt. Operations Voted to send SB281 to the Full House. See how members of the two committees voted. Feel free to call them and let them know how you feel about them infringing on your Constitutionally protected right to "Keep and Bear Arms" When this bill......» Read More- View vote sheets

ACTION TO TAKE
  1. Plan to come to Annapolis Tuesday and possibly Wednesday to sit in the balcony of the House Chamber. Session typically starts at 10am, if there are changes I will send an update.
  2. Continue to make calls to the members of the House of Delegates- regardless of district and urge them to oppose SB 281
  3. Share this update! Forward to a friend and post it to your favorite social media site.
 A Word About Amendments
When the bill comes to the House Floor, I will vote against the bill in whatever form it is in. This means I will vote against all amendments, even should the amendments themselves seem to be common sense. I take the view that making the bill "less bad" still does not make it a good bill, no matter how much you amend it.

For this reason, I will vote against all amendments and the bill in its entirety.
Thank you for your continued and tireless efforts.Though it feels like your voices are falling on deaf ears, please do not falter at the finish line. Should the bill pass, I assure you that there will be additional calls to action as we continue to fight this battle on many different fronts.

Constitutionally Yours,
Delegate Don Dwyer, Jr.
Maryland General Assembly

BALTIMORE – Maryland residents do not have to provide a "good and substantial reason" to legally own a handgun, a federal judge ruled Monday, striking down as unconstitutional the state's requirements for getting a permit.

U.S. District Judge Benson Everett Legg wrote that states are allowed some leeway in deciding the way residents exercise their Second Amendment right to bear arms, but Maryland's objective was to limit the number of firearms that individuals could carry, effectively creating a rationing system that rewarded those who provided the right answer for wanting to own a gun... http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/03/05/federal-judge-rules-maryland-gun-permit-law-unconstitutional/

Smigiel’s Regulated Firearms Reciprocity Bill Introduced Again

Delegate Mike Smigiel Press Release

Contact: Andi Morony                                                                                   January 20, 2010
            410-490-2734

For Immediate Release
Smigiel’s Regulated Firearms Reciprocity Bill Introduced Again

Delegate Mike Smigiel has re-filed  a reciprocity bill for concealed carry permits from contiguous states. “In reflecting on the recent tragedy in Tuscon it is important to realize that one of the men who helped to disarm the gunman possesses a concealed carry permit. Joe Zamudio helped to restrain the gunman while others took his gun and ammunition. Mr. Zamudio was carrying a concealed weapon at the time he ran towards the gunman and you have to ask yourself, would he have felt as comfortable helping to restrain the gunman if he was not armed himself?”

HB 9 would allow for citizens from Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania and West Virginia to travel to Maryland and contribute to the economy with the freedom to carry the the weapons they were issued permits for in their home state. Neighboring states currently recognize firearm and concealed carry permits from other states. Delegate Smigiel has received numerous letters and testimony in support of the reciprocity law from Maryland citizens as well as citizens from neighboring states. “Maryland recognizes out of state driver’s licenses and even though Maryland does not issue marriage licenses to same sex couples, the Attorney General has opined that Maryland would have to recognize same sex marriages performed in other states. So if we recognize out of state drivers licenses and may have to recognize same sex marriage licenses from other states, then why wouldn’t we recognize a license to carry a concealed weapon or firearm from another state as well?” asked Delegate Smigiel.

Delegate Smigiel is very optimistic about  House Bill 9 this session, “HB 52 was a victory in that it was the first time a pro concealed carry bill was able to get out of the Committee Chairman’s drawer for a vote even though it eventually lost in an 11-10 vote in the Judiciary committee. I was proud of the widespread support which this legislation gained last year and expect HB 9 will continue to gain momentum during this session,”said Delegate Smigiel.

One of the first hearings in Judiciary Committee this session will be on HB 9 which is scheduled to be heard on January 25th at 1PM. Citizens can now watch the hearings online at: http://mlis.state.md.us/2011RS/hearsch/committee-hearings-index.htm. “The opportunity for citizens to be able to get involved in watching legislative hearings provides a level of transparency that I am excited to see,” says Delegate Smigiel.
