Somebody Got Somebody's Attention

The Democratic monopoly in Annapolis regards the state’s outgunned Republican Party and its ideological allies as little more than irritants and convenient scapegoats.

In the rare instance in which Democrats choose to respond to a volley from the other side, it tends to be of the dismissive variety, like a hand lazily swatting at a pesky insect.

So, when the Democratic establishment actually chooses to engage its ideological foes in a substantive manner, it is a noteworthy development.

That’s what happened recently when the O’Malley Administration returned fire on an organization headed by a frequently mentioned possible 2014 candidate for governor.

ChangeMaryland, which bills itself as “the grassroots movement fighting to bring fiscal responsibility and common sense to Annapolis,” was founded and is chaired by Larry Hogan, a fellow veteran of the Ehrlich Administration.

The organization, which has over 14,000 followers on Facebook, is a burr in the saddle of the O’Malley Administration, frequently criticizing its policies in the areas of taxation, the budget, and the state’s job growth and retention efforts.

Recently, ChangeMaryland released a study in which it maintains that 31,000 high income citizens disaffected by Governor O’Malley’s tax and spend policies fled the state between 2007 and 2010, taking $1.7 billion in lost tax revenue with them... http://rjc-crosspurposes.blogspot.com/2012/07/somebody-got-somebodys-attention.html

This afternoon I had a substantive and positive conversation with former Lieutenant Governor and RNC Chairman Michael Steele.
The conversation came about in a roundabout way. After I posted my most recent blog piece about his future plans, two Steele supporters started complaining about what I wrote, leaving or attempting to leave aggressive and sometimes antagonistic comments on my blog. One of them even sent me an email telling me I was “demanded” to contact Steele so he could set the record straight.

Bob Ehrlich's New Sun Column: Mrs. Reason's Take

The Baltimore Sun created a bit of a sensation yesterday when it announced that it was giving the late Ron Smith’s column to its longtime nemesis, former Governor Bob Ehrlich.

A lot of people were surprised by this news, including me." ... http://rjc-crosspurposes.blogspot.com/2012/01/bob-ehrlichs-new-sun-column-mrs-reasons.html?spref=fb

TheTentacle.com: Scenarios Abound for the 430 session of the MD General Assembly and the 2014 MD elections

TheTentacle.com: Scenarios Abound for the 430 session of the MD General Assembly and the 2014 MD elections

"Next Wednesday, on January 11, the 430th taxing tradition of the Maryland General Assembly opera will once again take center stage.

Besides the apocalyptic foreboding talk of proposed tax increases, tax hikes, revenue enhancements, and increased investment, who really knows what is in store for Marylanders. All indications point to multiple plots with subplots and subplots to subplots plus a few soliloquies on the side.

The most intriguing subplot has to do with how the actions of this session will affect the 2014 gubernatorial campaign. More on that later." ... http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4840

Cross Purposes: Smart Grid, Shrewd Politics by Richard Cross

Smart Grid, Shrewd Politics

http://rjc-crosspurposes.blogspot.com/2010/08/smart-grid-shrewd-politics.html?spref=fb
This week, the Maryland Public Service Commission approved BGE’s plans to deploy “Smart Grid” technology across Maryland, ending a saga which began in June.

Smart Grid technology allows consumers to better track and control energy usage, resulting in significant energy and cost savings. The PSC’s action preserves Maryland’s eligibility for $200 million in federal stimulus grant monies earmarked for Smart Grid projects.

The whole Smart Grid saga has received significant local media attention during the past two months. Absent from all the coverage, however, was the extent to which gubernatorial politics guided the outcome.

Flash back to 2006, when BGE customers were hit with 70 percent rate increases. Then-Mayor Martin O’Malley used the issue as a weapon in his contest again Governor Bob Ehrlich. O’Malley assigned all blame for the rate increase to Ehrlich and the members of his Public Service Commission, promising to roll back the increases if he won. And, he got away with it.

Of course, Governor O’Malley and his own Public Service Commission failed to deliver on these promises.

Now, as Governor O’Malley fights to keep his job...
