Political Maryland’s Democratic Cocoon by Barry Rascovar

Nov. 14, 2016 – A Martian landing in Maryland on election night never would have guessed that Donald Trump was about to pull off the upset of the century.

That’s because Maryland is an outlier, an exception to what happens in presidential elections in the rest of the country. Political Maryland's Democratic Cocoon

Trump got slaughtered in Maryland, receiving just a little over a third of the vote. Only a few other heavily Democratic states, like Massachusetts and California, saw such lopsided Democratic victories in the presidential race won by Republican Trump.

The election map in Maryland looked surprisingly similar to the 2012 election map. Democrats have such overwhelming majorities in the densely populated Central Maryland subdivisions that this provides a protective cocoon for the party’s presidential candidate.

Carroll County Republican Party: The complete Thanksgiving story, election results, more

Carroll County Republican Party: The complete Thanksgiving story, election results, more

Lady Liberty

Upholding the traditions and values of Constitutional Conservatism through the Republican Party in Carroll County, Maryland

The Carroll County Republican Central Committee wishes everyone a very blessed Thanksgiving holiday.  The meaning of Thanksgiving that is taught in the public education system today is often an incomplete account.  Click here to read the rest of the true meaning of Thanksgiving that your children, and maybe even you, have not heard before.
Republicans had a great night this past General Election. Republicans took control of the U.S. Senate, increased their numbers in the U.S. House, and locally, Larry Hogan will be our new governor and Republicans added seats in the Maryland House of Delegates and the Maryland Senate.

Message from the
Carroll County Republican
Central Committee Chairman

Fellow Carroll County Republicans,

To all those who helped in the campaign, the entire Central Committee says, "THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS!  You did the impossible."

There were those in the state and across the country who said, "It could never be done.  A Republican? In Maryland? With 2 to 1 Democrat registration? Never."
Not only did we elect a Republican Governor; but we added 2 Republican State Senators and 7 House Delegates.

Carroll County had a temporary headquarters on Main Street in Westminster. Every day volunteers came in to spend their time phoning voters and asking them to vote for Hogan and other Republicans. It is normal for many people to vote in Presidential elections; but to skip mid-term elections. Those voters received a phone call telling them how important this election was. It seems that it worked.

To those who came to headquarters to make calls, we say, "Thank you." To those who handed out literature or held signs at the polls, we say, "Thank you." To those who sign waved or knocked on doors, we say, "Thank You." To those who put bumper stickers on your car, we say, "Thank you." To those who voted when they normally may not have voted, we say, "Thank you." It would not have been possible without all of you.
Maryland showed the country on November 4th that IT COULD BE DONE. We made national news and it felt good.

It was a privilege working with you, but it's not over. Now we must focus our efforts on 2016. If this felt good, just imagine how good it will feel when Maryland provides enough electoral votes to put a Republican back in the White House in 2016.
 Warm regards,
Larry Helminiak
Carroll County Republican
Central Committee Chairman

The Sun sets on Red Maryland By Jeff Quinton on March 11, 2014

The Sun sets on Red Maryland By Jeff Quinton on March 11, 2014

Over the weekend I wrote about the evolving situation that started off when Joe Steffen wrote about Red Maryland the previous Sunday. Joe Steffen went after Red Maryland. He accused them of running a protection racket in the way they were soliciting advertising for their radio shows.

He also criticized them for Mark Newgent, a Red Maryland contributor, and Jackie Wellfonder, a Red Maryland Network host, doing consulting work. Additionally, Wellfonder’s and Red Maryland’s early support for Larry Hogan was mentioned. Later that week, Michael Swartz inserted himself into the situation and then Red Maryland responded to Steffen’s claims and denied his allegations of a “protection racket” while seemingly implying that they might pursue legal action.

As I noted in my Saturday piece, it appeared to me that Red Maryland’s early Friday response was a result of The Baltimore Sun saying something to them. I received a no comment from a Red Maryland contributor late Friday when I asked if the Sun had contacted them. As it turns out, there was a good reason for that.

Yesterday, Media Matters reported on the events of March 7:

[…]

One veteran politico noted that the marketing email was “just dumb” and a “questionable” decision. This same politico noted that:

Those guys were still thinking and behaving like bloggers. The Sun relationship required that they change their thinking.

2012 Meets "1984"

TheTentacle.com The 2012 Maryland General Assembly special session meets Orwell's 1984

By Kevin E. Dayhoff

TheTentacle.com: "Amid rancorous opposition from Republicans and rising discontentment among segments of the ruling Democrats, the curtain rose Monday for an attempt at a carefully choreographed special – 431th – session of the Maryland General Assembly opera.

It was on May 4 that Gov. Martin O’Malley announced that the legislature would get together for a couple of days to raise taxes and enact more laws, rules and regulations in Maryland.

Paradoxically, Jim Joyner wrote in ExploreCarroll.com on May 6 that the Carroll County delegation observed that “the county would be better off under the state's ‘doomsday’ budget, and stands to lose some $1 million in state funding in a special session of the Maryland General Assembly…

“‘I challenge that moniker ... it's not a doomsday budget,’ said Sen. David Brinkley (R., Carroll/Frederick). ‘Frankly, the budget still goes up by $700 million, and I think the citizens are expecting us to live within our means as they are having to do so.’ ”" ... http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5111

This is the time of the year when many citizens turn their attention to the budget processes of Carroll County government and its eight municipalities. No matter where you live in Carroll County, money matters.

Statewide, Gov. Martin O'Malley has announced that on Monday, May 14, the General Assembly will get together for a couple of days to raise taxes and enact more laws, rules and regulations. The Republican Farm Team

December 1, 2010

Kevin E. Dayhoff
In the days following the November 2 state and national midterm elections, pundits have superficially opined at great length as to the depth and meaning of the phoenix-like resurgence of the Republican Party on the national level.

Beyond the media bright lights and glamour focused on the national contests, the number of Republicans voted into local and state offices lends us a better fundamental nuts and bolts gauge for the future of the GOP.

Writing for the Oregon Statesman, my Capitolbeat reporters’ association colleague, Peter Wong, called the November midterm elections a political hurricane when he recently reported on a presentation by Tim Storey, a senior fellow with the National Conference of State Legislatures...

[...]

Besides, I have never been a fan of the “great person” theory of history.

In Ms. Bykowicz’ article she quotes Mr. Murphy to wisely note: “We turned a pretty good election into a defeat,” Murphy said, describing how Ehrlich's loss overshadowed the local gains. “It's our own fault. We focused all our attention like a laser on one person, one position. And we've got to stop doing that.”

In Carroll and Frederick counties, Republican leadership appears to be much more public policy fundamentals-driven than that of the cult of personality.

According to Ms. Bykowicz, “When … officials are sworn in next month, 15 of the state's 23 counties will be run at the local level by Republicans. Nine of those won't have a single Democrat in their governing body – a phenomenon Republican blogger Richard Cross described as ‘Maryland's red underbelly.’ ”

Or what I refer to as the Republican farm team.

However, to paraphrase my McDaniel College political science professor, Dr. Herb Smith, “Now comes the hard part – governing.”
