Plenty of Pleasant Valley history on display at St. Matthew’s homecoming Sunday

Eagle Archive By Kevin E. Dayhoff, Sunday, September 20, 2015

There was plenty of good food, fellowship, stories and history on display at the St. Matthew's United Church of Christ’s homecoming event, in Pleasant Valley last Sunday, Sept. 13.

Friends and family from all over Carroll County, and current and past members of St. Matthews, gathered for church services Sunday morning. Then folks streamed into the first floor to a large display of Pleasant Valley artifacts, newspaper clippings, deeds, marriage certificates, papers, and pictures.

Pastor Debra Peters Wilcox noted in her sermon, “…It’s been a good morning … as we … have been getting ready for this, our homecoming day… And the weeks flew by, and people started pulling scrapbooks out of closets, and quilts out of bedrooms. We found old photos, old banners, old Sunday school awards… and we began to realize that, when it comes to remembering our days at St. Matthew’s, we have a lot to say!”

The day before, church elder and Pleasant Valley historian, Angela Gist Bowersox was found awash in a sea of boxes, books and papers in the downstairs social hall of the church.

Remembering the fallen by Michel Elben Carroll County Times

Michel Elben Carroll County Times twitter.com/MichelElben

Proudly waving American flags, over 40 people walked half a mile from the St. Matthew United Church of Christ to the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Sunday afternoon to honor those killed in service to their country in observance of Memorial Day.

"We honor the people that have given the utmost to our country and kept America free," said Arthur Jenne, a retired Marine Corps officer from Pleasant Valley.

Kevin Dayhoff, who served in the Marine Corps Reserves, was the keynote speaker.

"It is our duty and responsibility as citizens, to remember these brave sons of Carroll County and never forget the men and women who know all too well the cost of our freedom, for their service to our country is the greatest gift of all," Dayhoff said.

Union Church Congregations Make It Official With Merger

St. Matthew's Members Join Together On Pentecost

May 22, 1991|By Amy L. Miller | Amy L. Miller, Staff writer

PLEASANT VALLEY — Two congregations sharing one building celebrated the birthday of the Christian church by merging to create one unified church.

Members of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church transferred their names to the rolls of St. Matthew's United Church of Christ during a unification service on Sunday.

"Sunday the 19th was chosen because it's Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of the church," said the Rev. Charles Stanfield, pastor of St. Matthew's.

The two denominations of St. Matthew's had been a union church -- or congregations sharing the same building -- for more than 100 years, he said.

Although preparations for the formal merger began in January, members of both congregations had been considering the move for some years, said member Donna Geiman.

"The first time it shows up in the church notes is about 12 or 15 years ago, but the time wasn't right," she said. "Things have to come at the right time."

However, the idea came up for serious consideration when St. Matthew's Lutheran's minister -- the Rev. Paul A. Haack -- left the church to pastor the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Oxford, Pa.

The Rev. Adam Fisher pastored St. Matthew's Lutheran until the end of December. Read more: http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1991-05-22/news/9113005480_1_matthew-lutheran-union-church-matthew-united-church
