Shutting down Google+ for consumer (personal) accounts on April 2, 2019

What a total PIA!

Shutting down Google+ for consumer (personal) accounts on April 2, 2019

January 30, 2019

In December 2018, we announced our decision to shut down Google+ for consumers in April 2019 due to low usage and challenges involved in maintaining a successful product that meets consumers’ expectations. We want to thank you for being part of Google+ and provide next steps, including how to download your photos and other content.

On April 2nd, your Google+ account and any Google+ pages you created will be shut down and we will begin deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts.

Photos and videos from Google+ in your Album Archive and your Google+ pages will also be deleted. You can download and save your content, just make sure to do so before April.

Note that photos and videos backed up in Google Photos will not be deleted.

The process of deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts, Google+ Pages, and Album Archive will take a few months, and content may remain through this time. For example, users may still see parts of their Google+ account via activity log and some consumer Google+ content may remain visible to G Suite users until consumer Google+ is deleted.

As early as February 4th, you will no longer be able to create new Google+ profiles, pages, communities, or events. See the full FAQ for more details and updates leading up to the shutdown.

If you’re a Google+ Community owner or moderator, you may download and save your data for your Google+ Community. Starting early March 2019, additional data will be available for download, including author, body, and photos for every community post in a public community. Learn more

If you sign in to sites and apps using the Google+ Sign-in button, these buttons will stop working in the coming weeks but in some cases may be replaced by a Google Sign-in button. You’ll still be able to sign in with your Google Account wherever you see Google Sign-in buttons. Learn more

If you’ve used Google+ for comments on your own or other sites, this feature will be removed from Blogger by February 4th and other sites by March 7th. All your Google+ comments on all sites will be deleted starting April 2, 2019. Learn more

If you’re a G Suite customer, Google+ for your G Suite account should remain active. Contact your G Suite administrator for more details. You can also expect a new look and new features soon. Learn more

If you're a developer using Google+ APIs or Google+ Sign-in, click here to see how this will impact you.

From all of us on the Google+ team, thank you for making Google+ such a special place. We are grateful for the talented group of artists, community builders, and thought leaders who made Google+ their home. It would not have been the same without your passion and dedication.

The latest of the all-too-frequent clumsy error messages folks get on their computers from Microsoft, Google, Adobe, et al, is one that reads: “Sorry, Backup and Sync needs to quit.” 7:30 p.m. EST 16Mar2017

LOL – What the What. Curious, I did search on “Sorry, Backup and Sync needs to quit,” and tech writer, Corbin Davenport, writing for the website, Android Police,” seems to have just unraveled the mystery, minutes ago… http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/03/16/google-drive-windows-self-updating-backup-sync-breaking-process/

“Did you think Google's intentional downgrade OTA for the Nexus 6 from yesterday was bad? Google appears to be on a mission to break as many products as possible, and next up is the Google Drive client for Windows.

“If you've ever used Google Drive (or similar cloud services), you'll know that there is a Windows client that syncs all your Drive files locally to your computer. It hasn't received much attention over the years, and is rather buggy. As for the good news - Google seems to be working on an updated version. The bad news is that an unfinished and broken build is being pushed live.”

I will add, that to say that it is “rather buggy,” is an understatement.

Anyway, read much more here. Mr. Davenport explains it well. Thank you.

How to block people on Google+

My e-mail and Blogger posts are getting spammed more and more by unwanted marketing content from Google+ users ... It just might be time for Google to address the problem... Just saying... https://www.google.com/search?q=How+to+block+people+on+Google%2B&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS564US564&oq=How+to+block+people+on+Google%2B&aqs=chrome..69i57.17019j0j1&sourceid=chrome&espv=210&es_sm=122&ie=UTF-8

***********************
Block someone https://support.google.com/plus/answer/1047934?hl=en
Block someone

  1. Open Google+ and use the search bar at the top of the page to find their profile.
  2. Click  next to their name.
  3. Select Report/block [person's name].
  4. Click the checkbox next to Block [person's name].
  5. Click Done in the lower-right corner.
You can block someone while editing your circlesin Hangouts, or when reporting their content for violating our User Content and Conduct Policies. Hangouts On Air are live video Hangouts, which are broadcast via YouTube. If the host invites people you've blocked to a Hangout On Air, you may see video of each other participating in the Hangout and you may see each other's names, profile pictures, and questions or other content.

What happens when you block someone

The following are the results of blocking someone. Keep in mind that the limits placed upon the person you've blocked are only enforced when they're logged in. For instance, if someone you've blocked is signed in, they won't be able to see your public posts, but if they aren't signed in, they may be able to see those posts. When you block someone:
  • You won't see their content in your stream (even though you'll remain in their circles).
  • They'll be removed from any circles of yours that they appear in.
  • They'll be removed from your extended circles, even if you have mutual connections.
  • They won't be able to add new comments to your content.
  • They won't be able to see your comments on other people's posts.
  • They won't be able to view any of your posts that you share after blocking them.
  • They won't be able to mention you in posts or comments.
When you block someone, we won't proactively notify them (unless you block them from within a video call). But since blocking someone limits the interactions that person can have with you, they may figure out that they've been blocked.

See people you've blocked

To see the list of people you've blocked, follow these steps:
  1. Open Google+. Place your cursor in the top left corner for the Google+ main menu.
  2. Click  People.
  3. Click Your circles at the top of the page.
  4. Click Actions in the left corner.
  5. Select View blocked.

Blocking and Communities

Communities in Google+ are shared spaces for users to gather and have conversations around common interests. Communities have owners and moderators: users who are responsible for managing these shared spaces so that everyone has a positive experience.
If you join a community that is managed by someone you've blocked, you will not see content they share. However, the person you've blocked, as a moderator, will be able to view and moderate the content you share in that community. They will not be able to +1 your comments or posts, nor will they be able to comment or reshare your posts or photos. As always, people you've blocked will not be able to see or interact with Google+ content you share outside of the community.
If you own or moderate a community and someone you've blocked is a member of that community, the content they share in that community will be hidden with the option to view the content for moderation purposes. You will not be able to +1 their comments or posts, nor will you be able to reshare or comment on their posts or photos.

How to prevent strangers on Google+ from flooding your Gmail inbox | PCWorld

How to prevent strangers on Google+ from flooding your Gmail inbox | PCWorld:

"If you use Google+ and Gmail, Google is about to open your email account to a whole new level of spam. A new feature rolling out over the next couple of days makes it possible for any Google+ user to email you, as long as they follow you on Google+—they don’t need to know your actual email address, and you don't even have to follow them back. And to make it even worse, Google took the Facebook approach by turning on the new feature by default.

Fun, right? Not so much. I’ve already got this new “feature” in my inbox and the first thing I did was turn it off. Today, I’m going to show you how to do the same thing.

But first, let’s cover the basics about how this new “email via Google+” feature works." READ MORE: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2086722/how-to-prevent-strangers-on-google-from-flooding-your-gmail-inbox.html#tk.nl_today

[...]

When the Settings panel opens, scroll down the “General” tab until you see “Email via Google+” label. (If you don’t see the new setting in your Gmail account, check back over the next few days, as the feature is still rolling out to all Gmail users.) Click on the drop-down menu and choose the setting that you’re most comfortable with. Remember, by default Google is letting anyone from Google+ send you unsolicited mail. I chose to stop Google+ emails completely by selecting “No one,” as you can see below... READ MORE: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2086722/how-to-prevent-strangers-on-google-from-flooding-your-gmail-inbox.html#tk.nl_today

Google is building Chrome OS straight into Windows 8 | The Verge

Google is building Chrome OS straight into Windows 8 | The Verge:

By Tom Warren on October 5, 2013  http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/5/4806562/google-building-chrome-os-into-windows-8#!

"Google unveiled its Chrome Apps initiative recently to launch apps that exist outside of the browser and extend its reach into more of a platform, but it looks like the company has a whole lot more planned. Over the past few weeks, Google has been updating its developer version of the Chrome browser to run what's essentially Chrome OS within Windows 8's "Metro" mode.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/5/4806562/google-building-chrome-os-into-windows-8#!

Chrome traditionally runs on the desktop in Windows 8, but you can set it to launch within the Windows 8 Start Screen into a special "Metro-style" mode. The new updates are very different from the existing stable channel version of Chrome in Windows 8 that simply presents a fullscreen browser. In the latest dev channel release the UI and functionality is identical to Chrome OS. There's a shelf with Chrome, Gmail, Google, Docs, and YouTube icons that can be arranged at the bottom, left, or right of the screen. Like Chrome OS, you can create multiple browser windows and arrange them using a snap to the left or right of the display or fullscreen modes. An app launcher is also available in the lower left-hand corner."

The Problem with Google Drive | PCWorld Business Center

The Problem with Google Drive | PCWorld Business Center:

'via Blog this'

The Problem with Google Drive

Google Drive is here. On paper the Google cloud storage service compares favorably against rivals like Dropbox, SkyDrive, and Box. However, there’s one aspect of Google Drive that could force many users to shun Google in favor of the alternatives.
No, I’m not referring to the fact that Google Drive is inherently Android-centric and does not provide a mobile app client for any of the other platforms. Certainly, this is a factor for people who rely on iOS, BlackBerry, or Windows Phone mobile devices, but Google Drive can still be accessed via the Web on these platforms if necessary.
Google DriveGoogle Drive is great if you're Google-centric, but may have a fatal flaw if you're not.Robb Henshaw, Director of Communications atSugarSync, explains, “One reason we believe the average user will have trouble with Google Drive is that it requires users to convert their files into the Google Docs format if they want to work on their files.”

Mashable: What’s In a Name: Google+ Is Your Plus One

What’s In a Name: Google+ Is Your Plus One

Google+, the long-awaited and highly ambitious Circle-driven social network from Google, has a clumsy name. It’s a search-unfriendly and seemingly unfitting moniker for the world’s next great social network. So, why this bizarre name choice?
At launch, Google+ project co-leader Bradley Horowitz told AllThingsDthat the name denotes how the product will make every other Google product social. “It’s almost the smallest modifier on Google itself that you can imagine,” he said.
http://mashable.com/2011/07/09/google-plus-plus-one/
That small modifier carries one huge meaning. It’s not just Google any longer, it’s Google plus you, where Google becomes your plus one for the web...
