Red Maryland: Desperate Dems by Mark Newgent

Red Maryland: Desperate Dems by Mark Newgent

FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 2010

Desperate Dems

Clearly Martin O'Malley and the Maryland Democratic Party have moved from fear to desperation. They spent millions of dollars spinning lies about Bob Ehrlich only to drop precipitously in the polls.

So what is their response? Double down on the very actions that brought them to this point.
O’Malley surrogates are
harassing small business owners.
And now, instead of passive surveillance, Democrat operatives are acting as
outright provocateurs.

[...]

Of course, Salazar doesn’t mention that it was O’Malley who tried to strong arm state businesses into more draconian unemployment insurance regulations during the 2010 legislative session. To their credit the business community stood up to O’Malley and fought off his attempts to screw them yet again.

Salazar, you’ll recall was the guy, who back in January
slandered hundreds of tea party protestors as racists.

We are witnessing the actions of an arrogant Democratic monopoly desperate to hold on to power.

On a side note, O’Malley spokesman Rick Abruuzzese flat out lied when he said the O’Malley campaign has not been tracking Ehrlich. Here is a photo of an
O’Malley campaign worker recording Ehrlich at the Tawes crab feast in Crisfield last month. Notice the poorly hidden green O’Malley campaign T-shirt...  http://redmaryland.blogspot.com/2010/08/desperate-dems.html

Many are sad that the "Don" will not be running for governor this year...

Yesterday's announcement by Governor Robert L. Ehrlich put the cabash on the hopes of many that the "Don" (former Delegate Don Murphy) would run for the governor's mansion in Annapolis.

March 31, 2010

Meanwhile, it appears that Mr. Darkness has a thing or two to say: "On Announcing the Announcement Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Mr. Darkness writes:

"You know, here I was all ready to blog a neat, fun, piece about former delegate, lobbyist, and MD Delegation Chairman to the 2008 Republican National Convention, Don Murphy, saying he was considering a run for Governor in the Maryland GOP Primary this year, and what happens? Former Governor Bob Ehrlich picks today to initiate phase two of his Bataan Death March – not to election day 2010, mind you – but to his own damned announcement. How many times do these guys plan to leak this?

Whatever, onto the Don Murphy scenario first…

As is my wont when I am in the burg, I go to the Waterfront Hotel in Fells Point to relish in the etherally charged vocals of Bonnie Leigh (Boswell). On most such occasions, I am joined in this Heavenly pursuit by one or more GOP political types. This past Monday our group, which included former National Young Republican Chair Nicolee Ambrose, former Ehrlich speechwriter Richard Cross and yours truly, was joined by the aforementioned Don Murphy.

Though he told me this morning (prior to Mr. Ehrlich announcing his intentions to announce for governor on April 7th) that it was the “Beer and bravado talking,” Murphy told me last night that a potential run for governor on his part was “in the mix.” As MD point man for the 2008 McCain Presidential campaign and Senior Advisor to MD GOP U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Eric Wargotz to go with his other credentials, Murphy undoubtedly has a set of...bona fides.

Ehrlich says he will run for governor

Writing for the Baltimore Sun, Julie Bykowicz has broken the story that Ehrlich says he will run for governor on the Sun web site, 4:26 p.m. EDT, March 30, 2010.

According to Ms. Bykowicz:

Decision to challenge O'Malley comes after months-long 'listening tour'

Former Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. confirmed Tuesday that he will challenge Gov. Martin O'Malley this fall.

Ehrlich, the state's only Republican governor in a generation, lost to O'Malley, a Democrat, by six percentage points in November 2006, after one term in office. Since then, Ehrlich has opened the Baltimore branch of a North Carolina law firm and hosted a Saturday radio talk show with his wife, Kendel Ehrlich.

"Next week, I'm going to announce my candidacy for governor," Ehrlich said in a conference call with reporters Tuesday afternoon.

"There's a real sense of concern about the direction our state is taking," Ehrlich said. "We are about new ideas and proven leadership in Annapolis." Asked about the "new ideas," the former governor, who presided over the state from January 2003 to January 2007, said "stay tuned."

Ehrlich, 52, said he plans to launch his campaign with events in Rockville and at his boyhood home in Arbutus and then spend the next three days traveling to small towns across the state.

20061208 Popularity and success could not save Gov. Ehrlich

'A Wipeout Election' Popularity and success couldn't save one Republican governor from the Democratic tide.

Tuesday, December 5, 2006 12:01 a.m. EST
Hat Tip: GOPCharlie – Thanks

In case you missed it, (I had missed it and can’t thank GOPCharlie enough for calling it to my attention…) Brendan Miniter, who has a most excellent column on the
Wall Street Journal’s Opinion Journal, has written a fascinating vignette of Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich.

'A Wipeout Election'
Popularity and success couldn't save one Republican governor from the Democratic tide.
BY BRENDAN MINITER
Tuesday, December 5, 2006 12:01 a.m. EST

ANNAPOLIS, Md.--In the four weeks since losing his bid for re-election, Gov. Robert Ehrlich has been braced by an outpouring of support from constituents. Each day he reads some of the thousand of letters and emails that have come in and marvels as one after the other expresses regret for his defeat.

But every so often, the governor told me on Friday, he comes across a letter of a different sort. These come from residents who say that they're "sorry" that they couldn't support him "this time," but that if he runs again they'll likely vote for him then.

Here the governor, the first Republican chief executive the state has seen in more than three decades, pauses. We're sitting in a private study in the governor's mansion, and over some 90 minutes a half dozen of his top staff members will trickle in and take a seat. None possess an answer to the question he now asks: "How do you respond to that?"

[…]

He lost last month because the Democratic voters who had supported him four years ago decided this year to use their votes to "send a message" to Republicans in Washington.
