Carroll County’s Legacy in Presidential Politics by Joe Getty

Carroll County’s Legacy in Presidential Politics by (c) Joe Getty

October 30, 2008

I am always amazed at how the Baltimore region media wrongly stereotypes Carroll County as some unsophisticated poor “country cousin” that is always doing something to embarrass its big city counterparts.

The most frequent media technique to pigeon-hole Carroll County’s citizens is to send a news reporter for a “person on the street” interview. To me, they are talking to a normal, common-sense Carroll Countian with traditional conservative values – but in the Baltimore City media, it always comes off as commentary from some far-out, right-wing zealot.

Recently, the public radio station WYPR sent a reporter to find Obama supporters in Carroll County. The journalist actually did a fairly good job in balancing both sides in comparison with many hatchet jobs done by other media outlets – but you are still left with an underlying insinuation of “Here we are in Carroll County wondering how in the world those people out there could vote for John McCain?”

If the big city media got past its myopia of Carroll as a long-standing Republican bastion in a Maryland sea of blue, they would realize that there is a diversity of political opinion in the county. In fact, through most of the 20th century, the majority of registered voters in Carroll County were Democrat. And traditionally, the elected officials in Carroll County ranged about 50/50 of Democrats to Republicans.

It is a phenomenon of the 1990s that Republicans gained the majority in voter registration and, in 1998, captured all of the state, local and courthouse seats in Carroll. Probably many factors contributed to this very recent Republican dominance.

One of the major factors would be that, despite party labels, county residents have had a long tradition in choosing the more conservative candidate in presidential politics.

As shown by the chart below, over the past 70 years, a Democrat presidential candidate carried Carroll County in only one election. That candidate was Lyndon Johnson who beat Barry Goldwater in the county by the slim margin of 119 votes in 1964.

Moreover, if you go back 90 years of elections, Republican presidential candidates have been victorious in Carroll County in 20 out of 22 contests. Even Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who carried the county in the depression era election of 1932 against Herbert Hoover, failed to carry Carroll County in his three latter campaigns.

We can expect the pendulum to swing back and for local Democrats to be elected to state and local office, perhaps as early as 2010 when the county government switches from three at-large commissioners to five commissioners elected by district.

But the county’s bedrock philosophy of conservative politics, especially as shown in presidential contests, will likely be around for many decades to come.

20080206 Public Message from WYPR President Tony Brandon

Public Message from WYPR President Tony Brandon

(UPDATED 2/6/08)

Letter From the President

http://www.wypr.org/PresLetter.html

Dear WYPR Listeners,

Over the past few days we have heard from many of you regarding the cancellation of Marc Steiner’s show. I want to let you know that we hear you and we hear your concerns. The sequence of events that led to the sudden cancellation of Marc’s show unfolded rather quickly. Understandably, the news came as a shock to our listeners and supporters. For this I sincerely apologize. I assure you that this decision was not entered into lightly and was a very difficult one for everyone here at WYPR.

Please know that everyone at this station is one hundred percent committed to the mission and values of public radio. This change will in no way affect our commitment to providing our community with a voice or to addressing the most important and pressing issues that affect all of us on a local, statewide or national level.

Every person in this building, whether they be on the production side, in membership, on-air, or part of our administrative staff, works every day to bring the community the best public radio programming possible. We hope that you will not forget that and, while we understand that the Steiner cancellation represents a loss to many of you, we want to remind you of the role that this station, as a whole, plays in your everyday life.

If you are thinking of switching the dial because of this decision, please stop to consider how much Baltimore and Maryland need the spirit of involvement, education and community embodied in public radio. We intend to continue in our mission despite difficult changes and upsets along the way. We hope that you, too, will continue to foster the community dialogue and support that begins here, on WYPR.

Kind regards,

Anthony S. Brandon

President

20061030 Appearance on the Mark Steiner Show

Monday, October 30th, 20006 appearance on WYPR’s the Mark Steiner Show
with UMBC Professor Tom Schaller

Finally posted Thursday, November 7th, 2006. Sometimes my life is not my own…

To listen to the audio of the October 30th, 2006 appearance, go here. (If you use Mozilla Firefox, you can bring it up in another tab and keep working with the show playing …)

Pictured above is Dr. Schaller doing a stand-up after the show, outside of the WYPR building on Charles Street.

On Monday, October 30th, 2006, I had the pleasure to appear on WYPR’s “The Mark Steiner Show” with UMBC Professor Tom Schaller for a discussion of the upcoming Maryland elections. Mr. Steiner is certainly an accomplished veteran and come to find out, so is Dr. Schaller.

Thomas F. Schaller, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

The show came on the heals of a column Dr. Schaller had just penned in The Examiner, on October 27th, 2006, “Will Ehrlich see first defeat of his political career?”

I keep running across Crablaw’s post: “Kevin Dayhoff on WYPR Marc Steiner show,” that reminds me that I haven’t posted about the show. You might say, that for several days, Crablaw has played the role of my “electronic wife.”

Crablaw, we will look forward to your analysis of the program. Hopefully you draw the same conclusion as I did, that the Schaller-Dayhoff show actually furthered intelligent conversation about the current state of pre-election politics in Maryland.

WYPR billed it on their web site as: “We're less than two weeks away from the elections which means the political ads are getting nastier and the papers are endorsing candidates. Marc and his guests UMBC Professor Tom Schaller and Political writer Kevin Dayhoff will discuss the political campaigns and strategies of candidates running for office in Maryland.”

Oh – the music was great: Music break one: "National Seven" by Wizz Jones
Music break two: "Reminiscing at the Blue Note" by Earl Hines.

Although I have done radio before; (once for a very brief appearance on WBAL after “Who is Max Cleland?and with Stu Kerr's radio talk show, "The Garden Club", on WCBM several times in 1989 and 1990 - - ages ago, in a previous life as a horticultural expert… I haven’t done it for awhile and was worried that I would be rusty. Oh yeah, I did plenty of radio and “stand-ups,” when I was mayor of Westminster

Mark Steiner and Dr. Schaller - -and the production assistant, Marcus Charleston, made it easy…

To state the obvious, radio is very different from writing columns. With columns, you can write and re-write and re-write a sentence over and over again until it is (hopefully) just right. Not so with radio. Once it comes out of your mouth, that’s it. Bam!

Oh, Dr. Schaller has a book out – you can find it here: Dr. Tom Schaller’s Book, Whistling Past Dixie: How Democrats Can Win Without the South on Amazon.com.

The Denver Post did a good question and answer on October 24th, 2006 about his book, in their series - - Washington and the West . It can be found here: Q&A: Author Tom Schaller on why Democrats should forget about the South

Like I said, Mark Steiner and Dr. Tom Schaller made the show easy. And I can’t wait to do it again.

Please enjoy the show.
