Cracker Barrel Fires 73-Year-Old Veteran for Giving Away Cornbread : People.com

Cracker Barrel Fires 73-Year-Old Veteran for Giving Away Cornbread : People.com:

By ALEX HEIGL 06/30/2014

"Joe Koblenzer is 73 years old. He's a Vietnam veteran, and until recently, he worked as a host at a Cracker Barrel in Florida.

One day, Koblenzer was approached by a man he describes as "needy," who asked for some mayonnaise and tartar sauce. The man told Koblenzer he was going to make fish for dinner, and needed the condiments. Koblenzer obliged, and gave him a cornbread muffin."  http://www.people.com/article/cracker-barrel-fires-vietnam-vet?xid=rss-topheadlines&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+people%2Fheadlines+%28PEOPLE.com%3A+Top+Headlines%29

9 things we learned about Pippa Middleton in her first TV interview - TODAY.com

9 things we learned about Pippa Middleton in her first TV interview - TODAY.com: Eun Kyung Kim TODAY June 30, 2014 http://www.today.com/news/pippa-middleton-speaks-heres-9-things-we-learned-1D79862019

http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2014/06/9-things-we-learned-about-pippa.html

"She’s the sister of one of the world’s best known royals and became an instant celebrity after her bridesmaid gown got her more attention than she expected — and nearly upstaged her sister’s wedding.

Since then, Pippa Middleton has captured the world’s curiosity, landing gigs as a party planner and, more recently, as a writer. She’s a contributing editor for Vanity Fair and a food columnist for the British Waitrose Kitchen magazine.

The normally tight-lipped 30-year-old younger sister of Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, sat down recently with TODAY’s Matt Lauer for her first television interview. Here are 9 things we learned about Pippa."

Hat Tip to my brother-in-law for calling to my attention the article... Caroline and I had a very brief interview with Ms. Middleton when she came through town on the Race Across America and came away with a very-very positive first impression - "Pippa's team latest attraction for Carroll County cycling fans." http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/carroll/westminster/ph-ce-eagle-archives-0702-20140624,0,5021714.story

Philippa Charlotte "Pippa" Middleton, the sister of Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge and the sister-in-law of an heir to the British throne, Prince William; joined a long and storied tradition of bicycling history in Carroll County when she dashed through Westminster Friday night a week ago.

Unlike the newspaper reports of throngs of spectators for a Carroll County bicycling event over a hundred years ago on June 30, 1898, the “great Bicycle Race Meet under the supervision of the Cycling Ramblers of Westminster,” my wife and I were the only persons on Main Street at the railroad tracks to greet Middleton and her team at 10:48 p.m.

Middleton was riding in the team car behind a teammate who was taking their turn on the bike. We called to her attention the British phone booth behind us at Johansson’s as we exchanged pleasantries as she and her teammates stopped at the traffic light.

Before it landed on the cutting room floor, I also wrote, "

Middleton, who is better known as a writer, first caught the public’s eye at her sister’s royal wedding on April 29, 2011; when she wore an ivory-colored figure-hugging dress in her role as the maid of honour.

Since then she has maintained the public’s attention with sense of style, ‘fascinator’ hats and writing columns for several publications including The Spectator, Vanity Fair, and The Sunday Telegraph.  http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/carroll/westminster/ph-ce-eagle-archives-0702-20140624,0,5021714.story

I am seriously not a fan of "Today." That said, I really appreciated the interview - and thanks for calling to our attention the article, "9 things...” I was struck with two things: First because I am a writer, I noticed her say, “I want to carry on writing. I've always loved writing. So that's the plan. And a few other things in the pipeline,” she said, declining to elaborate. “There’s so much I'd love to achieve. And I still want to keep up the sport and health side of things because that's really important to me. So trying to blend that in with my love of writing and food and entertaining.

The second item that really caught my eye, is the same thing that has really bothered Caroline and me about being a public person in the age of social media. It may seem naive of me, but I am constantly aghast at how mean people can be. People who do not even know us - especially when people are being mean about things that are simply not true.

I mean, I realize that I am writing this on social media and I should probably just shut up. But I remain bewildered about the level of meanness that came from working with the public and especially the press...

I appreciated it when Ms. Middleton said, “I have felt publicly bullied a little bit just by, you know, when I read things that clearly aren't true or that, whichever way someone looks at it, it's a negative side,” she said. “It is quite difficult. Because eventually I'm just paving my way and trying to live a life like any 30-year-old.”

Just saying...

Walmart Corporate - Fact Check: The New York Times "The Corporate Daddy"

We saw this article in The New York Times and couldn't overlook how wildly inaccurate it is, so we had some fun with it. I hope you will too. ...

Walmart's Response to the New York Times Was Brilliant | LinkedIn

June 26, 2014

Once in awhile I come across a PR tactic that makes me shake my head and think, “I wish I thought of that.”

My company doesn’t represent Walmart, sadly, and the retail behemoth probably spends more on public relations and crisis communications than the GDP of some third world countries, but if we did I’d like to think I’d handle things like Dave Tovar, their VP of corporate communications.
In case you’re unaware, last week Tim Egan, writing in The New York Times, drew a contrast between Walmart and Starbucks with regard to how they treat their respective employees and their contributions to society and the economy. Needless to say, it got into some serious bashing of the much-maligned retailer, however this time, Walmart fought back in the most clever of ways.
Posting the story on its blog, Tovar took a red pen like many a school teacher and systematically “edited” the article. Beneath a note that said “Tim: Thanks for sharing your first draft.

Daily Record: Mosby defeats Bernstein in Baltimore prosecutor’s primary - June 25, 2014

Daily Record: Mosby defeats Bernstein in Baltimore prosecutor’s primary

Marilyn J. Mosby pulled off an upset win against incumbent Gregg L. Bernstein in the Democratic primary for Baltimore City State’s Attorney.

Bernstein conceded defeat late Tuesday night when unofficial results showed him trailing Mosby significantly. Early Wednesday morning, results from all precincts showed that Mosby won by 55 percent to 45 percent.

Mosby, an assistant state’s attorney from 2005 to 2012, has been a litigator for Liberty Mutual Insurance since leaving the prosecutor’s office.

Mosby, 34, told The Daily Record in May that the “traditional approach to crime fighting in Baltimore has failed” and that one of her first priorities would be join forces with the Baltimore Police Department “to effectively manage and target the violent repeat offender list.” She also vowed to improve the office’s relationship with the community, saying he had created a “culture of mistrust.”

Radiolab: Limits – Fantastic Podcast Episode about Endurance Athletes

Radiolab: Limits – Fantastic Podcast Episode about Endurance

Athletes: http://runblogger.com/2010/05/radiolab-limits-fantastic-podcast.html

"May 1, 2010 By Peter Larson"I’m a sucker for a good endurance sports story, and more often than not, when it involves people demonstrating incredible perseverance, I tend to get a bit emotional (think NOVA Marathon Challengeor Spirit of the Marathon). The other day a friend of mine on dailymile posted a link to a podcast episode from WYNC’s Radiolab that told several stories of people testing the limits of human the human body, both physical and mental. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to getting a little choked up while listening to this. Here’s the episode description from the Radiolab website: http://runblogger.com/2010/05/radiolab-limits-fantastic-podcast.html

Priscilla G. Teeter, a registered nurse who later became an administrator with the Carroll County Health Department, died May 30 of brain cancer at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster. She was 85.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/obituaries/bs-md-ob-priscilla-teeter-20140616,0,4054151.story Fred Rasmussen is a great writer and he did a good job on a tribute to a wonderful Carroll County icon.

Mrs. Teeter was an absolutely wonderful person, as was her late husband, who was also extremely good to Caroline and me. Mrs. Teeter will be greatly missed and her passing makes me very-very sad.

According to Mr. Rasmussen, "Mrs. Teeter was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 17 Bond St., Westminster, where a celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday."

The officials said Ahmed Abu Khattala was captured over the weekend by American troops working alongside the FBI and is now in U.S. custody “in a secure location outside Libya.” Khattala was apprehended near Benghazi.
