Baltimore Sun January 2, 2014 by Kevin E. Dayhoff: Westminster celebrated New Year in 1897 with new train station

Several readers recently contacted me and were looking for this article from January 2, 2014 by Kevin E. Dayhoff: Westminster celebrated New Year in 1897 with new train station [Eagle Archive] January 2, 2014 by Kevin E. Dayhoff

The big news for the New Year's celebrations in Westminster in 1897 was the opening less than a week before of a new train station in town. Westminster celebrated new year in 1897 with new train station [Eagle Archive]

According to research for the Historical Society of Carroll County by Jay Graybeal, the Democratic Advocate newspaper reported the opening of the station on Dec. 26, 1896.

A big deal was made over the fact that the station had indoor bathrooms: "Toilet rooms for ladies and gentlemen open from each of the waiting rooms… and the mirror in the ladies' department is already in active operation."

Like many areas, the growth of the county was linked to the presence of a train. Much of the expansion of the industrial, commercial and employment base in Carroll after the Civil War, for example, was partially due to the fact the railroad had arrived in 1861.

April 1, 1899: Friday night Westminster to Baltimore train discontinued

Democratic Advocate, April 1, 1899.

Friday night Westminster to Baltimore train discontinued

The Friday night train to Westminster from Baltimore, to accommodate persons desiring to attend the theatre, has been discontinued, because of lack of sufficient patronage.

The Railroad Company did not give the train a fair trial. Many persons do not attend places of amusement during Lent, and the train was started at the very beginning of Lent. Had the train been started the first of December the result would have been different.

Or, if the train had been continued during April, we believe the patronage would pay more than the cost.

Democratic Advocate, April 1, 1899.

20070611 Follow-up on "20070610 The Last Train to Clarksville”

Follow-up on "20070610 The Last Train to Clarksville

June 11th, 2007 2:30 AM

UPDATE: I wanted to call to your attention the comment that Mr. Burns left… on "20070610 The Last Train to Clarksville" (I wish I could figure out a way to highlight comments better…)

Before I get to Mr. Burns’ comment, I want to say again, how much I appreciated his post that brought back so many memories of a time and place from a long time ago. Thanks.

For those who are not aware of Mr. Burn’s web site – Please check it out. It has become part of my necessary reading everyday. Find it here: Maryland Politics Today.

As far as Dwight Dingle and WTTR – these folks are simply super. Dwight and I had a great deal of fun with my Westminster Eagle column on aspects of 1967 last Wednesday, June 6th, 2007: Dwight Dingle, 'Sgt. Pepper' and a bathtub band . (I may need to republish it on “Soundtrack” as I have received questions from many folks as to where they may find it.

Meanwhile – some insight into the column can be found here: 20070606 Dwight Dingle and The Mamas and The Papas.”

Of course, it was the topic of on-air discussion the day it came out, June 6th, 2007 and then the next evening, I talked about the column and other erratum on-air with Bruce Main…

Anyway:

P. Kenneth Burns has left a new comment on your post "20070610 The Last Train to Clarksville":

Believe me when I tell you this, it was more of a play on words than anything.

Little known fact, around the time when I was in the 2nd grade back in 198x, Nickelodeon and Nick and Nite picked up The Monkees television show. Then some years later, I come to find out that there is a Clarksville in Howard County.

As far as the Betamax reference, that was more irony than anything. If you are a regular YouTube user, feel free to look up user "videoholic2007," who was boasting about his Betamax collection.

BTW, Dwight Dingle and the folks at WTTR are a nice group. check out the pictures on my main site, www.kennyburns.com from my visit up there last year.

Thanks for the feedback. And oh, I saw The Monkees TV show when it was prime time TV… And Mr. Burns, the next time you are in town, please let me know. Lunch is on me.

20070610 The Last Train to Clarksville

The Last Train to Clarksville

June 10th, 2007

On June 10th, 2007 Maryland Politics Today had a post titled “The Last Money Train To Clarksville.”

As much as I appreciated P. Kenneth Burns calling to our attention the need of Baltimore mayor Dixon to go outside of the city for support for her re-election campaign, I was particularly intrigued with the reference to the “Last Train to Clarksville.”

And only Mr. Burns knows if he was referring to mayor Dixon’s trip to Howard County in the manner in which the 1966 Monkees’ meant it… Or if he was referring to mayor Dixon and “Betamax” metaphorically or if it is a coincidence…

But what a trip down memory lane that reference causes an aging Baby Boomer such as me. Although, I gotta tell ya, “The Monkees” were a little lame for my taste to put it mildly; it nevertheless brings back a time and place from many years ago.

And it comes on the heels of just writing a Westminster Eagle column on aspects of 1967 last Wednesday, June 6th, 2007: Dwight Dingle, 'Sgt. Pepper' and a bathtub band :

“It was 40 years ago last Saturday, June 2, 1967, when the Beatles released their eighth album, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Although musical taste can be fiercely debated, many music critics and publications consider this album to be one of the most influential of all time. Rolling Sto...”

“The Last Train to Clarksville,” from 1966, may be considered to be a pop song and to be sure, it certainly has a bubblegum feel and sound to it. Nevertheless the song was about a serious dynamic in the lives of young men eligible for military duty.

The song, with its “pop flavor” and seemingly light-hearted approach is forever engrained in my head as a great example of cognitive dissonance…

Listen to the lyrics.[1]

The song is about a man who is trying to arrange one last date with his sweetheart because he has been drafted and he is about to be deployed to Vietnam. Listen for :

'Cause I'm leavin' in the morning

And I must see you again

We'll have one more night together

'Til the morning brings my train.

And I must go, oh, no, no, no!

Oh, no, no, no!

And I don't know if I'm ever coming home.

And the reference to “Betamax players [2] in home” was equally a hoot. Yes, I actually still have content on old “beta” tapes.” And I thought some of the data migration from my old columns and short stories in DOS-based “Word Perfect” was hard…

And I cannot imagine hardly any of our younger readers are aware of whar being “betamaxed” means… (“A superior technology that is overtaken by an inferior one.”)

Anyway, thanks a bunch for memory Mr. Burns…

Meanwhile if you are not reading Mr. Burn’s excellent work at Maryland Politics Today,” there is no better time than now…. Err, after ya watch, “The Last Train to Clarksville” by the Monkees:

Oh what the heck… Let’s hear more. This is a song that I did like:

“Valerie”

I liked this one too:

The Monkees - A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You

[1] Last Train to Clarksville

Words and Music by

Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart

Take the last train to Clarksville,

And I'll meet you at the station.

You can be be there by four thirty,

'Cause I made your reservation.

Don't be slow, oh, no, no, no!

Oh, no, no, no!

'Cause I'm leavin' in the morning

And I must see you again

We'll have one more night together

'Til the morning brings my train.

And I must go, oh, no, no, no!

Oh, no, no, no!

And I don't know if I'm ever coming home.

Take the last train to Clarksville.

I'll be waiting at the station.

We'll have time for coffee flavored kisses

And a bit of conversation.

Oh... Oh, no, no, no!

Oh, no, no, no!

Take the last train to Clarksville,

Now I must hang up the phone.

I can't hear you in this noisy

Railroad station all alone.

I'm feelin' low. Oh, no, no, no!

Oh, no, no, no!

And I don't know if I'm ever coming home.

Take the last train to Clarksville,

Take the last train to Clarksville,

[repeat and fade]

[2] Betamax:

The first half-inch, analog videocassette recorder (VCR) format, introduced by Sony in 1975 and commonly known as "Beta." The first Betamax cassettes held only one hour of video, but the capacity was subsequently increased to hold an entire movie. Sony later introduced Beta Hi-fi, which improved audio quality, and SuperBeta, which offered a better image.

Beta Vs. VHS

One year after Beta was introduced, the VHS format came out with a slightly larger cassette that held a full movie from the start. VHS began to overtake Beta almost immediately, but for several years, both formats were widely used, and pre-packaged movies were offered in both Beta and VHS. By the late 1980s, Beta had been almost entirely eclipsed by VHS, although Betamax machines were still manufactured by Sony until 2002.

Betamaxed!

The Betamax technology was considered to have superior image quality over VHS, but was hardly noticeable on ordinary home equipment, especially if the recording was done off the air and not from a high-quality master tape. To this day however, "Betamaxed" refers to a superior technology that is overtaken by an inferior one. See VHS, helical scan, Beta/VHS debacle and Betacam.

Carroll County Government calling for a voluntary precautionary evacuation for train derailment.

Fri 12/15/2006 2:16 PM

Carroll County government has sent out an e-mail calling to the public’s attention that emergency rehabilitation crews are calling for a voluntary precautionary evacuation for train derailment.

_____

Emergency crews are going door to door within a one-mile radius of the CSX train derailment asking residents to evacuate their homes, while the tanker containing anhydrous ammonia is righted and put back on the rail.

This is a voluntary, precautionary evacuation.

A shelter has been established at the Sykesville fire hall on Route 32 for those residents. About 100 homes are affected.

Both Carroll and Howard Counties' school systems have been notified and asked that students who live in the immediate area stay at their schools.

Residents who live between one and three miles of the incident are asked to stay inside, close all windows and doors, and shut off any outside ventilation such as heat pumps and air conditioning.

Those homes will be alerted through an automated telephone message from both Howard and Carroll emergency managers. A second message will be issued when the hazard has been removed.

To reiterate earlier messages, the tanker is not leaking. The evacuations are a precautionary measure.

Another release will be issued when the hazard is removed.

20061215 Train derails along Patapsco River

Train derails along Patapsco River on Howard and Carroll County line.

by Kevin Dayhoff 7:15 AM Friday, December 15th, 2006

At 2:15 AM, Carroll County, Howard County, Maryland Department of the Environment, and CSX Railroad Hazmat personnel responded to the scene of a CSX freight train derailment.

The voice traffic on the emergency response radio indicated that the train which was comprised of three locomotives and 91 cars was traveling from Cumberland to Philadelphia.

At last report 21 train cars jumped the tracks in a remote area along the Patapsco River in the Patapsco Valley State Park between Sykesville and Marriottsville in the vicinity of Henryton Road the old Henryton hospital.

Communications were difficult as it was in an area where there is no Nextel service, the communications carrier used by many local public safety agencies. Radio and cell phone reception with other carriers was also difficult.

Access to the remote area was difficult and getting to the site of the derailment was delayed until all-terrain “gators,” were brought to the site.

Hazmat personnel finally reached the scene of the derailment at approximately 5:55 AM to find that train cars #27, #28 and #29 were of the most concern and that train car #29 had tipped over. One or several of the train cars are transporting anhydrous (without water) ammonia.

The train cars were not leaking and causing “no issues,” and there is no “immediate concern at this time;” however it would appear that it will be an extended rehabilitation of the train cars involved.

According to Carroll County public information officer, Vivian Laxton, who arrived at the scene 6 PM, there are no reported injuries.

The hazmat response went like clockwork. However the news crews that responded did not have as much luck as mobile news units from ABC2, WBAL and WJZ all got stuck in the mud.

20031008 Two Cows

TWO COWS

October 8th, 2003

Political humor with an edge – the story of two cows…

DEMOCRAT

You have two cows. Your neighbor has none. You feel guilty for being successful. You vote people into office that put a tax on your cows, forcing you to sell one to raise money to pay the tax. The people you voted for then take the tax money, buy a cow and give it to your neighbor. You feel righteous. Barbara Streisand sings for you.

SOCIALIST

You have two cows. The government takes one and gives it to your neighbor. You form a cooperative to tell him how to manage his cow.

REPUBLICAN

You have two cows. Your neighbor has none. So?

COMMUNIST

You have two cows. The government seizes both and provides you with milk. You wait in line for hours to get it. It is expensive and sour.

CAPITALISM, AMERICAN STYLE

You have two cows. You sell one, buy a bull, and build a herd of cows.

DEMOCRACY, AMERICAN STYLE

You have two cows. The government taxes you to the point you have to sell both to support a man in a foreign country who has only one cow, which was a gift from your government.

BUREAUCRACY, AMERICAN STYLE

You have two cows. The government takes them both, shoots one, milks the other, pays you for the milk, and then pours the milk down the drain.

AMERICAN CORPORATION

You have two cows. You sell one, lease it back to yourself, and do an IPO on the 2nd one. You force the 2 cows to produce the milk of four cows. You are surprised when one cow drops dead. You spin an announcement to the analysts stating you have downsized and are reducing expenses. Your stock goes up and you sell out and retire rich.

FRENCH CORPORATION

You have two cows. You go on strike because you want three cows. You go to lunch. Life is good.

JAPANESE CORPORATION

You have two cows. You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk. They learn to travel on unbelievably crowded trains. Most are at the top of their class at cow school.

GERMAN CORPORATION

You have two cows. You engineer them so they are all blond, drink lots of beer, give excellent quality milk, and run a hundred miles an hour. Unfortunately they also demand 13 weeks of vacation per year.

ITALIAN CORPORATION

You have two cows but you don’t know where they are. While ambling around, you see a beautiful woman. You break for lunch. Life is good.

RUSSIAN CORPORATION

You have two cows. You count them and learn you have five cows. You drink more vodka. You count them again and learn you have 42 cows. You count them again and learn you have 12 cows. You stop counting cows and open another bottle of vodka. You produce your 10th, 5-year plan in the last 3 months. The Mafia shows up and takes over however many cows you really have.

TALIBAN CORPORATION

You have all the cows in Afghanistan, which are two. You don’t milk them because you cannot touch any creature’s private parts. Then you kill them and claim a US bomb blew them up while they were in the hospital.

POLISH CORPORATION

You have two bulls. Employees are regularly maimed and killed attempting to milk them.

FLORIDA CORPORATION

You have a black cow and a brown cow. Everyone votes for the best looking one. Some of the people, who like the brown one best, vote for the black one. Some people vote for both. Some people vote for neither. Some people can’t figure out how to vote at all. Finally, a bunch of guys from out-of-state tell you which is the best-looking one.

NEW YORK CORPORATION

You have fifteen million cows. You have to choose which one will be the leader of the herd, so you pick some cow from Arkansas
