The Gospel According to Luke, Chapter 2
The Gospel According to Luke, Chapter 2
1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Letters to Santa: Why charity groups fought to have kid’s letters end up in the dead letter office.
Letters to Santa: Why charity groups fought to have kid’s letters end up in the dead letter office.: "A century ago, charities fought to have children’s wish lists sent to the dead letter office. They lost. By Alex Palmer"
http://www.slate.com/articles/life/holidays/2014/12/letters_to_santa_why_charity_groups_fought_to_have_kid_s_letters_end_up.html
What could be more innocent than a letter to Santa? A child jotting down her heart’s desires in pencil or crayon and dropping it in the mailbox, naively hoping the wish will be granted by Christmas morning: It’s a tradition that goes back at least to the mid-1800s, and it is a reminder of the holiday’s more idyllic past.
These days, such letters are viewed as an opportunity to help the less fortunate. In many cities across the U.S., the Postal Service makes available Santa letters to groups or individuals who want to fulfill the wishes enclosed within. It’s a small gesture, multiplied hundreds of thousands of times a year, that brings joy to both the giver and the recipient. What harm could come from that?

Oh, just teaching kids to beg, cheat, and lie—at least, that was the conventional wisdom of charity groups in the early 1900s. As such, the Post Office Department, now known as the U.S. Postal Service, found itself in the middle of a wild confrontation between a press and public that never failed to find delight in a note opening with “Dear Santy,” and groups that claimed Santa letters were the product of con artists in training.
“The Post Office Department does not believe in Santa Claus,” lamented the New York Times in a 1906 article about the government policy that undeliverable mail—including letters addressed to a certain chubby, sleigh-riding fellow—be sent to the dead letter office and destroyed. ... http://www.slate.com/articles/life/holidays/2014/12/letters_to_santa_why_charity_groups_fought_to_have_kid_s_letters_end_up.html

Carroll's Christmas celebrations tempered by news of war, Great Depression
#CarrollCounty #Christmas celebrations tempered by news of war, Great Depression
@SunWestminster Columnist @kevindayhoff Many years ago, most of the newspaper accounts about Christmas in Carroll County were not published until after Christmas. Most of the advertisements for Christmas did not appear until well after the first day of December. Christmas was celebrated for a short period of time then folks quickly went back to the business of the day.

Westminster Patch: History indicates that this time of the year has always been busy by Kevin Dayhoff
History indicates that this time of the year has always been
busy.
By Kevin Dayhoff, Saturday, December 7, 2013
Let’s briefly revisit Thanksgiving before it fades into a
distant memory. The rise of ‘Black Friday’ and the over-commercialization of
Christmas in recent years has hastened the gradual disappearance of
Thanksgiving.
Many folks can still fondly recall a time not too many years
ago when Thanksgiving was still a holiday all to its own and not ‘the day
before Black Friday.’
I recently introduced the Thanksgiving holiday, “… as the
first day of the winter solstice holiday season. Others know it as the ‘Harvest
Festival Bowl,’ and celebrate by gathering together and arguing over football.”
On November 26, 2011, the Scripps Howard News Service said
it best when it editorialized, “Thanksgiving (is still) around, but not so
you'd notice it. Pilgrims and Indians are being replaced by door busters and
rolling sales. The traditional Thanksgiving dinner is less a family feast than
an opportunity for carbo loading for the rigors of the morrow's shopping
marathon.
“The weekend after Thanksgiving has always been the
traditional start of the holiday shopping season, but the Christmas ads began
right after Halloween with darn little mention of Thanksgiving.
“America's hypercompetitive retailers began hyping their
Black Friday sales, and America's hypercompetitive shoppers responded. Stores
began opening earlier; for a few brief years, 4 a.m. Friday was the tacitly
agreed-upon opening time. But then some stores moved it back to midnight,
others followed and now some are opening at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving Eve...”

Christopher Elliott: TSA Watch special report: The TSA is like getting a Christmas card from Al-Qaeda, confiscated snowglobes and other epic sagas of security-theater from the world of traveling in America
Whatever the reason, we now have the latest TSA scandal: Rebecca Hains, a Peabody, Mass., college professor, says a single cupcake was confiscated by TSA agents in Las Vegas last week...
Snowglobes are not, however. Why? I haven’t heard a reasonable explanation yet. But here’s what happened when agents told blogger and Houston Chronicle features editor Kyrie O’Connor she couldn’t take hers on the plane earlier this month: http://blog.chron.com/memo/2011/12/america-declines-and-takes-me-with-it-part-the-567th/:

24/7 Wall St.: The Worst Holidays On Record Since The Great Depression
24/7 Wall St.: The Worst Holidays On Record Since The Great Depression by JON C. OGG
Retail sales this holiday season are expected to rise 3.8% to a record of $469.1 billion, according to the National Retail Federation. Overall, it has not been the best holiday season, but it's a significant improvement from the last few years.
How does 2011 compare to other years? This is 24/7 Wall St.’s analysis of the worst Christmases since the Great Depression.
As always, here are the top major media headline summaries from WSJ, FT, Bloomberg, and more. Here are the top rumors of the day.
US Stock-Index Futures Rising into Holiday Weekend.
New numbers show that Facebook and Amazon are now essentially portals.
Google's decision to give Mozilla $900 million to support Firefox shows a difficult balancing act between its search business and its Chrome browser.
It may be a little easier to find jobs, but some Americans are now concerned about the quality of the jobs as much as they are about finding jobs at all.
Happy holidays!
