Friday, November 4th in the evening, enjoy two art receptions open to the public:
5:30 to 7:30 pm, Off Track Art welcomes PETER PLANT as guest artist.

7:00 to 10:00 pm, Birdie’s Cafe features GAIL ELWELL's collage work.

Peter Plant is the gallery guest at Off Track Art for November and December.  Peter is a studio and plein air artist who has worked in a traditional style of painting in acrylics.  Over the past two years however, he has branched out and experimented with a variety of mixed media techniques which have broadened his experience in both studio and plein air work.  His studio work has included wet-in-wet acrylics on watercolor paper, images drawn with markers, as well as poured and splattered paint backgrounds.  Plant’s goal is to explore media and techniques that enhance the creative experience while presenting realistic images to the viewer.  Pearlescent inks, Sharpie markers, watercolor pencils, and colored pencils have all found their way into his art.

The Exhibit: Conceived by curator and Indofile Maggie Ball, this exhibit of memory and fantasy will delight the senses and evoke feelings of longing for times and places of transcendent beauty.  It is a translation of impressions inspired by many journeys to India - a homage to the spirit of a country possessed of extraordinary beauty, esoteric philosophy and compelling contradiction. From backroads and bazaars, art, decorative craft, textiles and jewelry merge to create a magical and sacred ambience sure to inspire. Look for related events throughout the semester.

The Jayamangala Dance Company performs Indian classical temple style of dance called "Bharatanatyam" which uses strong footwork, elegant hand gestures, facial emotions and gorgeous traditional costumes to tell stories of Hindu mythology and modern interpretations in an eclectic collection of solo and group works.

In keeping with the college's mission to promote broader understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity, this exhibit is part of a multi-event series of India related programs. For information about additional India related events and workshops sponsored by Continuing Education & Training, call 410-386-8100.

A further extension of this semester's India theme explores the ancient and revered ceremonial art-form of Henna painting. In India, decorative, temporary body painting Mehndi, is used to celebrate special rites of passage and ceremonial occasions such as weddings. Images of gorgeous Henna applications and accompanying commentary provide insight into the symbolic and sacred nature of the custom. At a specified time during the run of the exhibit a Henna artist will be at the college embellishing your body while demonstrating the technique!

Fine Art of Recycling By Charles Schelle

My Explore Carroll colleague, Charles Schelle, has written a great article on Eric Veach, who caught my eye with his wonderful art at the Westminster Flower and Jazz Festival:

Fine Art of Recycling

One man's junk is this man's creative canvas

Posted 5/16/10 by Carroll Eagle, Westminster Eagle
http://www.explorecarroll.com/news/4326/fine-art-recycling/
By Charles Schelle

When Eric Veach saw some leftover tractor parts pegged for the trash can last summer, the gears in his head started turning.

The 38-year-old Manchester resident thought he could take those worn-out parts, which had been removed from construction equipment, and create a holder for his pet's dog food bowl.

As it turned out, one man's junk turned out to be another man's canvas — and maybe even an environmental message.

"I started laying (the parts) out on a bench and seeing what would work, and that's kind of how I got started," Veach said.

Veach has been busy over the past year creating items ranging from miniature tractors and trucks to candle holders and some funky looking critters. He handcrafts each sculpture for his budding art business, Daughter's Delight.

Carroll Community College opens three different art exhibits - by Erica Kritt

Carroll Community College opens three different art exhibits

Carroll County Times News Web site http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/

Monday, April 19, 2010 by Erica Kritt

Art took center stage Sunday at Carroll Community College as three art shows opened on campus.

Maggie Ball, visual arts department chairwoman of Carroll Community College, said this was the first time the school had three openings in one day.

[…]

"Steven Dobbin: Reclamation, Variation II," opened in the Scott Center. His work features paint cans.

[…]

In the Great Hall of the college, the artist cooperative Off Track Art, which has gallery space in Westminster, displayed works with a train theme.

While some artists displayed sketches of train tracks, others did jewelry and paper cutouts.

"It challenged each of us to broaden our thinking," Mary Decker, one of the artists in the show, said.

Linda Van Hart, another member, said the Off Track Art exhibit was the center of the exhibitions, bridging the physical space between Dobbin's space and a gallery of student art.

The student art is being exhibited in the Langdon Gallery. Ball said that having the students in with the community artists and Dobbin gives them pride.

April 1, 1899: Friday night Westminster to Baltimore train discontinued

Democratic Advocate, April 1, 1899.

Friday night Westminster to Baltimore train discontinued

The Friday night train to Westminster from Baltimore, to accommodate persons desiring to attend the theatre, has been discontinued, because of lack of sufficient patronage.

The Railroad Company did not give the train a fair trial. Many persons do not attend places of amusement during Lent, and the train was started at the very beginning of Lent. Had the train been started the first of December the result would have been different.

Or, if the train had been continued during April, we believe the patronage would pay more than the cost.

Democratic Advocate, April 1, 1899.

Ubuntu On view Through March 16, 2010

"Ubuntu" is of South African philosophy of community spirit that can best be summed up as "I in You and You in Me."

Ubuntu will feature a variety of talented artists who grew up in other nations and now make their home in Maryland. Their art is reflective of traditional styles and worldviews from their birth nations combined with the Western aesthetic they encountered here. Home, family, love, nature, war and loss, collective themes of humanness are expressed realistically, abstractly and in mixed media.

Featured Artists: Najwa Al-Amin, Baltimore/Iraq; Pablo Caviedes, Ecuador/New York City, Irina Filonova, Columbia/Russia; Zahi Khamis, Baltimore/Palestine; Kateryna Mychajlyshun, Baltimore/Ukraine; Ray Chen, Taiwan/Indiana; and Sunil Sukla, Boonseboro/Bangladesh.

CELEBRATIONS
Happy Birthday, Off Track Art, celebrating one year as a coop gallery!

Join us in celebrating this young venue, along with celebrating Nancy Schmitt, who this winter becomes the second of rotating guest artists exhibiting with Off Track Art.

Come to our Opening Reception to see her wonderful, richly-colored felted objects.

New work in the gallery also include Linda Van Hart’s Meditation: Sense of Self and The Three Graces, beautiful collage statements created while in Budapest; vibrant new photographs by Gordon Wickes; Mary Decker’s bright, framed assemblages and other fun objects; Melinda Byrd’s intimate gestural drawings of jazz & blues musicians; and many more drawings, paintings, jewelry, and mixed media works that will delight and surprise!

Opening Reception: Friday, February 12, 2010... 5:30-7:30 PM. See you there!

GUEST ARTIST

By combining her fine arts and textile design backgrounds, Nancy Schmitt creates unique vessels, wall hangings and wearables made of felted wool. Her passion for working with wool fiber, along with the organic nature of the medium, help her connect the ancient traditions of felt making with modern artistry. Because wool is an organic medium, she must be willing to surrender preconceived design notions and allow the fiber to develop its own unique shape and form. The surface becomes truly three dimensional with the addition of beads that capture and reflect light. Sculptural cuts in the matte wool add texture and expose color changes in the fiber layers.
