(CNSNews.com) – President Barack Obama mocked a suggestion that he wants higher gasoline prices during an election year, although as a candidate in 2008 he suggested that higher prices might be desirable if there was a “gradual adjustment.”

During a news conference Tuesday, Fox News reporter Ed Henry asked Obama, “Your critics on Capitol Hill will say that you want gas prices to go higher because you have said before that will wean the American people off fossil fuels on to renewable fuels. How do you respond to that?”

Obama dismissed the question as ridiculous: …

On June 10, 2008 in an interview with CNBC’s John Harwood, then-candidate Barack Obama said, “Well, I think that we have been slow to move in a better direction when it comes to energy usage. And the president, frankly, hasn't had an energy policy. And as a consequence, we've been consuming energy as if it's infinite. Obama emissions rules impose real costs with illusory health benefits
By Iain Murray

The Washington Times

"Faced with rising gas prices, President Obama recently outlined what he calls an “all-of-the-above” energy policy “that develops every available source of American energy - oil, gas, wind, solar, nuclear, biofuels and more.” You may notice something missing there - coal, America’s most abundant and affordable fuel source. The administration’s “all of the above” strategy is anything but." ... http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/mar/30/war-on-coal-escalates/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&utm_medium=RSS

Energy chiefs’ message: Actions, not words, will determine energy future

An open letter to President @BarackObama: http://bit.ly/energyobama

BY HAROLD HAMM, AUBREY MCCLENDON, LARRY NICHOLS AND TOM WARD | Published: March 21, 2012

Welcome to Oklahoma, President Obama. We hope you develop a better understanding of the oil and gas industry, one of the largest and most vibrant sectors in the United States, during your visit. As Americans, we share a mutual desire to power our nation with homegrown energy sources. We join you in wanting to secure our energy future by lessening our dangerous dependency on imported oil.

No energy source can do more good for America than domestic oil and gas. You often mention the need for more well-paying jobs. Our companies are creating them — in particular, tens of thousands of every skill level from rig workers and truck drivers to top-flight engineers and Ph.D.s.

The paradigm shift in American oil and gas exploration and production is the brightest spot in our struggling economy. Keeping it going requires understanding of some critical business realities:

Approval of the entire Keystone XL pipeline should happen now — not after the election. Yes, we are pleased TransCanada decided to build a critical section of the project from Cushing to the Gulf Coast. We note that this section doesn’t require State Department approval. However, America’s greatest benefit will come when we can transport oil from our best energy partner, Canada, and oil-rich North Dakota and Montana.

Washington Post: As gasoline prices rise, Obama's ratings fall

The Washington PostMonday, March 12, 2012 12:15:18 AM
NEWS ALERT

As gasoline prices rise, Obama's ratings fall

Disapproval of President Obama's handling of the economy is heading higher — alongside gasoline prices — as a record number of Americans now give the president "strongly" negative reviews on the 2012 presidential campaign's most important issue, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Increasingly pessimistic views of Obama's performance on the economy — and on the federal budget deficit — come despite a steadily brightening employment picture and other signs of economic improvement, and they highlight the political sensitivity of rising gas prices.

(CNSNews.com) – Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) said he is not sure whether President Barack Obama agrees with his Energy Secretary’s goal to keep gas prices high, but he does think the president is in favor of lower prices, “at least for election day.”

During a press briefing on Thursday at the Capitol, Boehner was asked if he thinks Obama’s energy policies are intended to drive up oil prices, as some of Boehner’s fellow Republicans have implied.

“Well, with Secretary [Steven] Chu, who’s made it pretty clear that his goal is to have higher energy prices, I think that’s what a lot of our members were cueing off of,” Boehner said.

“I’m not sure that the president believes that higher energy prices are what he wants,” said Boehner. “And clearly after my discussion with him yesterday, I think he would prefer to see lower gas prices -- at least for Election Day.”

[…]

During his press conference Boehner noted that gas prices have doubled since the president has been in office, and said Republicans had worked to lower gasoline prices by supporting, for instance, the Keystone XL pipeline.

Westminster Maryland Online: Community Reporter Editorial from January 25, 1974...: January 25, 1974: Is There A Gasoline Shortage? Community Reporter Editorial - Is There A Gasoline Shortage?— With Congress getting ...

Community Reporter Editorial - Is There A Gasoline Shortage?— With Congress getting its "back up" at last over the energy crisis, oil companies are being forced to reveal that their storage tanks are overflowing and that they actually have more gasoline on hand than at this time last year.

Yet, through a foolish and totally unfathomable policy of the energy administration, gasoline stations in numbers of localities are being denied the amounts of gasoline that customers need to carry out their normal operations of travel — many times with serious implications to their work and their means of earning a livelihood.

There is every evidence that there is enough gasoline to permit normal operation of these stations, but under the monthly quota established they are prevented from receiving what they need to maintain their businesses.

Just what is back of this ridiculous contrived shortage?

Is it, as some suggest, a political maneuver to take people's attention off the "watergate" mess? Or is it, as seems much more likely, a deliberate attempt to force up prices and give the oil companies larger profits, in order that the government can collect higher taxes from them?

White House rushes to define Keystone message ahead of GOP - The Hill's E2-Wire

White House rushes to define Keystone message ahead of GOP - The Hill's E2-Wire:

By Andrew Restuccia and Ben Geman - 01/22/12

The White House is working to prevent President Obama’s rejection of the Keystone XL oil sands pipeline from becoming a political liability in an election year that will be dominated by jobs and the economy.

White House and campaign officials are emphasizing Obama's energy record in broad strokes -- highlighting steps the administration has taken to encourage oil and gas development and investments in clean energy. Those steps, the officials say, create far more jobs than approval of Keystone would have.

The decision Wednesday to deny TransCanada’s Keystone permit has further united Republicans around a common message: Obama is a job killer." ... http://thehill.com/blogs/e2-wire/e2-wire/205655-white-house-rushes-to-define-keystone-message-ahead-of-gop

U.S. Department of State: Denial of the Keystone XL Pipeline Application

Denial of the Keystone XL Pipeline Application
Media Note
Office of the Spokesperson
Washington, DC
January 18, 2012

Today, the Department of State recommended to President Obama that the presidential permit for the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline be denied and, that at this time, the TransCanada Keystone XL Pipeline be determined not to serve the national interest. The President concurred with the Department’s recommendation, which was predicated on the fact that the Department does not have sufficient time to obtain the information necessary to assess whether the project, in its current state, is in the national interest.

Since 2008, the Department has been conducting a transparent, thorough, and rigorous review of TransCanada’s permit application for the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline project. As a result of this process, particularly given the concentration of concerns regarding the proposed route through the Sand Hills area of Nebraska, on November 10, 2011, the Department announced that it could not make a national interest determination regarding the permit application without additional information. Specifically, the Department called for an assessment of alternative pipeline routes that avoided the uniquely sensitive terrain of the Sand Hills in Nebraska. The Department estimated, based on prior projects of similar length and scope, that it could complete the necessary review to make a decision by the first quarter of 2013. In consultations with the State of Nebraska and TransCanada, they agreed with the estimated timeline.

On December 23, 2011, the Congress passed the Temporary Payroll Tax Cut Continuation Act of 2011 (“the Act”). The Act provides 60 days for the President to determine whether the Keystone XL pipeline is in the national interest – which is insufficient for such a determination.

The Department’s denial of the permit application does not preclude any subsequent permit application or applications for similar projects.

President Obama Should Not Use Oil Spill Crisis To Push For Job-Killing Nat’l Energy Tax

Obama Administration Seeks Political Advantage On Backs Of Gulf Coasters When Both Parties Should Be Working Together To Address This Crisis

http://republicanleader.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=190549

President Obama Should Not Use Oil Spill Crisis To Push For Job-Killing Nat’l Energy Tax

Washington, Jun 15 -

In his address to the nation tonight, President Obama will reportedly use the Gulf oil spill crisis as a rationale to impose a job-killing national energy tax. To be sure, a feeding frenzy of liberal special interests is chomping at the bit, hoping the president will seize on his chief of staff’s philosophy that you “never let a good crisis go to waste.”

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) offered the following comment in advance of tonight’s Oval Office address:

“President Obama should not use this crisis as an excuse to impose a job-killing national energy tax on struggling families and small businesses. Americans want the President focused on stopping the leak and finding out what went wrong, not on twisting lawmakers' arms on Capitol Hill to pass more costly, job-killing legislation.”

President Obama has laid the groundwork for a renewed national energy tax push, even polling the issue in search of a political advantage:

“Obama calls on Congress to heed oil spill’s ‘wake-up call’ for emissions bill. … President Obama implored a reluctant Congress today to pass a comprehensive energy and climate bill this year in response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.” (E&E News, 5/27/10)

Obama seeks to whip up support for energy legislation on back of spill.” (The Hill, 6/14/10)

“…Obama’s pollster last week gave briefings to key leadership and committee staffers, as well as Democratic chiefs of staff, on the potential wonders a climate change bill could do for the party’s electoral prospects this fall.” (Roll Call, 6/15/10)

“Obama Says He’ll Push For Clean Energy Bill. … Seeking to harness the deepening anger over the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to the advantage of his legislative agenda, Mr. Obama promised to find the lagging votes in the Senate to get the climate change and energy bill passed this year.” (New York Times, 6/3/10)

“President Obama to seize on Gulf oil crisis to push for climate change legislation.” (The Examiner, 6/14/10)

“Joel Benenson, a pollster for the Democratic National Committee and Obama’s presidential campaign, argues in a new briefing for top Capitol Hill officials that a comprehensive energy bill ‘could give Democrats a potent weapon to wield against Republicans in the fall.’” (Politico, 6/14/10)

In the year since House Democrats forced through their much-maligned national energy tax bill, the nation’s economic situation has only grown more precarious. Americans need real solutions to create jobs, lower energy prices, and clean up the environment, but President Obama’s national energy tax is a recipe for increasing the burden on families and small businesses and shipping more American jobs overseas. The national energy tax was “left for dead” on the merits, and it should stay that way
