First legislative assembly in America — History.com This Day in History — 7/30/1619

First legislative assembly in America — History.com This Day in History — 7/30/1619:

"In Jamestown, Virginia, the first elected legislative assembly in the New World--the House of Burgesses--convenes in the choir of the town's church.

Earlier that year, the London Company, which had established the Jamestown settlement 12 years before, directed Virginia Governor Sir George Yeardley to summon a "General Assembly" elected by the settlers, with every free adult male voting. Twenty-two representatives from the 11 Jamestown boroughs were chosen, and Master John Pory was appointed the assembly's speaker. On July 30, the House of Burgesses (an English word for "citizens") convened for the first time"

Bouvines 27 July 1214: The most important battle you've probably never heard of - The History News network July 27, 1214 http://hnn.us/article/156458

Today few people in the UK have heard of Bouvines. It has none of the ring of an Agincourt or a Crecy. Probably that is because England lost it. But the battle of 27 July 1214 was just as significant as England's later victories over the French. Maybe more so.

"Bouvines is the most important battle in English history that no-one has ever heard of," says John France, professor emeritus in medieval history at Swansea University.

"Without Bouvines there is no Magna Carta, and all the British and American law that stems from that. It's a muddy field, the armies are small, but everything depends on the struggle. It's one of the climactic moments of European history."

By CNN Library: Korean War Fast Facts

Fri July 26, 2013

(CNN) -- Here's a look at what you need to know about the Korean War. July 27, 2013 marks 60 years since the signing of the armistice agreement that ended the fighting.

Causes of the Korean War

The 38th parallel division of Korea happened in August 1945, at the end of World War II. The 2 newly formed countries became ideologically opposite.

November 1947 - The United Nations General Assembly approves elections to be held throughout Korea to choose a provisional government for the entire county. The Soviet Union opposed this.

On May 10, 1948 the people of South Korea elected a national assembly. The assembly set up the government of the Republic of Korea. The people of north refused to take part. On September 9 North Korean Communists established the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Both sides claimed the entire country and their troops fought near the border several times from 1948 to 1950.

The United States removed its last troops from Korea in 1949 and in early 1950 North Korea decided upon war to achieve its goal of Korean unification under Communist rule.

Democratic Advocate, August 23, 1946.

MD. HEREFORD ASSOC. TOURS STATE - Visits Farms of Arthur B. Shipley, Near Sykesville –

The Maryland Hereford Association made an extensive tour of the state to visit pure bred Hereford cattle farms August 9th. A two-day affair, the tour gave cattle breeders an opportunity of visiting farms on the Eastern and Western shores of the state.

After visiting the Eastern shore, they returned to Annapolis where they spent the night. On Sat. they proceeded to the Richard C. Riggs Foxhall Farm at Catonsville.

On Saturday afternoon the caravan consisting of 27 cars and a bus arrived at 2 o'clock at the Highland View farms owned by Arthur B. Shipley.

There were a number of Western as well as Eastern states represented in the group. Mr. Richard C. Riggs, chairman of the committee, introduced Mr. Shipley who took them for a straw ride to view the fine purebred herd and pastures. Mr. Shipley has over 100 pure-breds on his farms.

Basketball - Blue Ridge College vs Westminster High, January 18, 1924 Democratic Advocate
Basket Ball—Dropping in two pointers with regularity, the Blue Ridge College girls' basketball team easily defeated the Westminster High School sextet, 24 to 13 at New Windsor, Friday.
Clever shooting from the floor by Miss Garber and Miss McKinney spelled defeat for the younger lassies, who fought valiantly, but could not cope with the tight defense of the winners.
Miss Myerly found the net for three neat shots from the floor, while Miss Jones was a dead shot at the 15-foot line, making good on four of her five chances.
The winning combination is priming for the next battle, booked for February 1 with the Western Maryland girls at the New Windsor court.

FDR introduces the lend-lease program — History.com This Day in History — 1/10/1941:

"On this day in 1941, Franklin Roosevelt introduces the lend-lease program to Congress. The plan was intended to help Britain beat back Hitler's advance while keeping America only indirectly involved in World War II.

As Roosevelt addressed Congress, the Battle of Britain was in its full destructive swing and Hitler seemed on the verge of invading Great Britain. The cash-strapped Brits desperately needed airplanes, tanks and ships to fight Hitler's imminent invasion. For months, Britain's prime minister, Winston Churchill, had begged Roosevelt for help, but the president was committed to abiding by Americans' wishes to stay out of another bloody world war." ... http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/fdr-introduces-the-lend-lease-program

The son of Quaker parents, Nixon grew up in the southern California city of Yorba Linda. Early on he proved himself to be a stellar student, attending Whittier College and graduating from Duke University Law School with honors. Nixon then joined the Navy and served during World War II as a lieutenant commander in the Pacific theater. After the war, he gravitated toward Republican politics, joining the post-war anti-communist crusade.

In 1950, Nixon ran against Democrat Helen Gahagan Douglas for a seat in the House of Representatives for California, earning the less-than-complimentary nickname Tricky Dick during the campaign for his ruthless red-baiting of his opponent, including alleging that Douglas was pink down to her panties. He won and gained national attention when, as a member of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), Nixon relentlessly grilled Alger Hiss, a Roosevelt New Deal liberal and former secretary general of the United Nations, at a hearing regarding allegations that Hiss facilitated communist infiltration of the U.S. government. Hiss, legally immune from espionage charges, was later convicted of perjury. The conviction, despite Hiss' denial of any wrongdoing, equaled an admission of guilt in the eyes of hard-line anti-communists. Largely due to his record of relentlessness in combating communism, Nixon earned the vice-presidential spot on the Republican ticket with Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952.

Early on in his career, Nixon was shadowed by allegations of accepting inappropriate campaign funding from big business and the Mafia. During his 1952 vice-presidential campaign, Nixon tried to dispel those accusations in what became known as the Checkers speech. The name was derived from a dog, named Checkers, that was given to his daughter by a corporate supporter. Playing on sentiment for his little girl, Nixon adamantly vowed to keep the dog. Americans charmed by Nixon's heart-warming, seemingly old-fashioned values helped vote the Eisenhower-Nixon ticket into the White House.

On the whole, though, Nixon did not owe his success in politics to personality or charm; in fact, some staunch supporters described him as cold, aloof, crude, arrogant and paranoid. Even Eisenhower claimed that his vice president would never win the presidency because the people don't like him. In 1968, Nixon proved his former boss wrong, but left the office in disgrace in 1974… http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/richard-m-nixon-is-born?catId=9
