Washington Examiner Opinion: 'Durbin fees' are coming, thanks to progressives

Washington Examiner Opinion Email Digest

If we had a "Dim Bulb of the Year" award, we would give it to Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. How better to honor someone who so ostentatiously proposes a policy with obvious unintended consequences, then gets angry when they predictably come to pass?

Western leaders have history of blinders on duplicitous regimes

Robert Conquest, pre-eminent historian of the genocides, purges and terrors of the Soviet Union, has long contemplated the blinders the West wears when looking at -- or, rather not looking at -- the millions of dead bodies the gigantically Evil Empire was responsible for.

Sunday Reflection: Changing the Constitution

By: Glenn Reynolds
Last weekend I participated in an unusual event -- a conference on the prospects for a federal constitutional convention at Harvard Law School, co-sponsored with the Tea Party Patriots and Fix Congress First. (See the agenda at www.conconcon.org). A wide variety of participants from both the left and the right mixed with surprising comfort and cordiality, and found numerous points of agreement.

One president, two days and seven fundraisers

All last week, President Obama continued a cross-country tour to promote his jobs bill. But as the quarterly deadline for fundraising approached, he also found plenty of time to woo the West Coast's rich and famous in search of their campaign dollars. In fact, Obama attended seven fundraisers in the space of two days -- a crash-course cash crawl that may have grossed his campaign up to $10 million.

Living amid Hollywood hypocrisy

By: Janine Turner
I had to listen to it for years on sets, at dinners, in rehearsals, in the make-up chair, and at award ceremonies. The judgmental, hot, mostly uninformed rants of Hollywood liberals breathed down my neck and sucked all the air from the room. Usually, the rants were so hostile that I was afraid to speak up, or so ridiculous that I thought it futile to reply.

Charlie Sheen - a misogynist?

Charlie Sheen - a misogynist?

The following is a transcript of an interview that Celebrity Life Coach and Human Behavior & Relationship Expert, Patrick Wanis Ph.D. gave to a reporter about Charlie Sheen who was hospitalized after allegedly being high on cocaine, hiring a prostitute, and becoming enraged and trashing the suite at the Plaza hotel in New York.

Patrick Wanis PhD: I’m not at all surprised by Charlie Sheen’s behavior. Yes, I heard that apparently his hotel was trashed plus he came back with an alleged escort.

Reporter: Right.

Patrick Wanis PhD: I also heard that police described him as “emotionally disturbed”, he had been our partying, that he was intoxicated and that he allegedly admitted the use of cocaine. It was reported that Sheen, who only recently was in rehab, also tested positive for cocaine after the incident.

Reporter: He has had these problems, you know, going back to 1990 when he shot his girlfriend in the leg and got in trouble for that. He has had other instances where he has attacked women that he has been married to or lived with and he has gone through the judicial system and each case, he was sent to rehab instead of jail and kind of came out and maintained his successful career. You know, movies and television. I’m just curious why someone who seems like he has everything going for him, you know, good looks, money, successful career continue to getting these types of problems…

Patrick Wanis PhD: Well, the answer is very, very simple and that is that what you’re seeing is simply the symptoms and the results of a much deeper issue. That issue is some emotional pain that will go all the way back and usually, what we find is that when a man tends to use a lot of prostitutes or a lot of escorts, and when he seems to display clear cases of violence against women, what we’re seeing is clearly misogyny. This is a guy who obviously for some reason doesn’t like women. When you are paying women, it means that you don’t respect them. One cannot argue that ‘oh, I respect her and that’s why I’m paying her so she’ll do as I say when I say and so that I’m in control and I have the power.’ We’ve also had numerous instances, whether it was Denise Richards or Brooke Mueller where Charlie Sheen was very violent.
Reporter: Yes, yes.

Patrick Wanis PhD: When you’re violent towards women, that means you have deep-seated rage and anger and the deep-seated rage and anger doesn’t seem to be at the world; it’s often directed at women... http://patrickwanis.com/blog/index.php/2010/10/27/charlie-sheen-a-misogynist/

I can’t wait to read the reaction of my colleague and good friend, Kenny Burns, who is my resident Kanye West authority. Read, “Red Maryland: Memo to Kanye: Liberals Do Not Care About People, period,” By P. Kenneth Burns, the editor of Maryland Politics Today.

Kanye West grabs mic from Taylor Swift at the MTV VMAs and makes a complete fool of himself – it wasn’t hard for Mr. West. He’s a professional troll.

Remember his September 2, 2005 outburst during a live-television Katrina fund-raiser: “George Bush doesn't care about black people.”

Click here for an image of the actual moment West grabbed the microphone from a visibly startled Swift:

September 14, 2009 by Kevin Dayhoff

By now many folks are aware of the hip-hop musician and rapper, Kanye West’s cringe worthy YouTube moment when he jumped up on the stage Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall during the MTV Video Music Awards and grabbed the microphone away from Taylor Swift and ranted that Beyoncé had been overlooked for the “Best Female Video” award.

Swift, 19, a country music sensation, had won the award for “You Belong With Me,” was just beginning to say, “I always wondered what it would be like to maybe win one of these someday, but never actually thought it would happen...”

Well, her moment in the sun did not happen as a result of the crass, bizarre behavior of Kanye – anything goes, cuz I’m self-absorbed and narcissistic – West.

Our hearts went out to Swift. It was her first award, and, well, West rained on her parade ‘real good.’ An obviously shaken Swift not finish her acceptance remarks…

Fortunately as tacky and classless as West was; the hero of the hour was the singer Beyoncé, who showed some grace, poise and class; and invited Swift up on stage to say a few words, when Beyoncé was awarded “video of the year” for “Single Ladies.”

20060831 KDDC Farrah Fawcett Angel for the ages

Farrah Fawcett - Angel for the ages

On August 29, 2006, Sun Reporter Rob Hiaasen, wrote a piece in the Baltimore Sun that captured my eye.

I must admit that the cultural phenomena of Farrah Fawcett came after I had attended Elon College (1971-1972 no degree,) so I never had her pin-up in my dorm room. I had Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Alvin Lee, The Almond Brothers Band and the like in my dorm room.

Hollywood types have never really been my heroes, not that the likes of Hendrix, Bowie et al were – I was and still am today – into music more than Hollywood…

Never-the-less, I am fascinated by Mr. Hiaasen’s presentation of Ms. Fawcett as a cultural icon of the 1970s:

A young publicity photographer shows up on Mulholland Drive with his '37 Chevy truck and Nikon-F reflex camera to shoot pictures of an angel in a rusty red swimsuit. She chose a one-piece. When she smiles, 32 teeth radiate at an inviting angle. When she tilts her head, flips of hair gather on her tan shoulders - a look that would launch a hairstyle fad for a generation.

In the time after Betty Grable's World War II pinups and Marilyn Monroe, before the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue mania and Pamela Anderson, the original swimsuit poster of Farrah Fawcett ruled gym lockers, offices and bedrooms.

Could you pass a guy's college dorm room in the 1970s and not see it?

Whatever.

You can read Mr. Hiaasen’s article here.
