On November 15, 2013, Eldersburg Patch editor Susan Jenkins wrote, “A Maryland State Trooper who was injured in October during a traffic stop has inspired many to take action in the form of a recent 5K benefit and a stepped-up effort by police to increase awareness about the Move Over law.

“Trooper Jacqueline "Jackie" Kline was hit in Anne Arundel County on Oct. 6 as she assisted another trooper on a traffic stop on Route 100 in Pasadena.

“To raise money to help Kline with expenses related to her recovery, about 800 runners participated in the 5K for JK on Nov. 10 in Sykesville. In his blog post on Patch, Kevin E. Dayhoff included photos and wrote about participating in the event. Click here to see the blog and more photos from the 5K for JK...”

(MT. AIRY, MD) – A Carroll County man is in Maryland State Police custody and will be charged in connection with the murder of his father that occurred this afternoon at the home the two shared.

The victim is identified as Michael J. Pine, 63, of the 700-block of Bridlewreath Way, Mt. Airy, Md.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.  His body will be taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death

The suspect is identified as Joseph W. Pine, 31, the son of the victim, who lived with him at the same address.
After consultation with the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office, State Police homicide investigators will be obtaining charging documents for the suspect tonight for the crimes of first and second degree murder.  Additional charges are possible, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

Joseph Pine has been taken to the Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster for medical and psychological evaluations.  Charges will be served on him either late tonight or tomorrow, depending on the disposition at the hospital.  He will remain under State Police guard until he is charged, when his custody will be turned over to Carroll County Detention Center deputies.

Shortly before 3:00 p.m. today, Maryland State Police at the Westminster Barrack received a 911 call from a neighbor reporting a disturbance between the victim and suspect outside their residence.  A state trooper assigned to the Mt. Airy Resident Trooper Program responded and arrived at the Pine residence minutes later.

As he arrived, the trooper observed a man, later identified as the suspect, standing outside his home.  Joseph Pine surrendered peacefully to the trooper and was immediately taken into custody.

Backup troopers and deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene.  Troopers observed the victim, later identified as Michael Pine, lying on the front porch of the residence next door.  He had sustained obvious trauma to his upper torso.  Emergency medical personnel who responded determined the victim was deceased.
The scene was secured by uniform troopers and investigators from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit responded to conduct the investigation, with assistance from State Police investigators from the Criminal Enforcement Division.  Crime scene technicians from the State Police Forensic Sciences Division responded and will be processing the scene.

State Police investigators applied for and obtained a search warrant for the crime scene.  Investigators and crime scene technicians will be processing the scene for evidence throughout the night, pursuant to the search warrant.  No information is available at this time regarding the recovery of the weapon or weapons used in the crime.

The preliminary investigation indicates some type of altercation occurred between the victim and suspect inside their home.  Evidence indicates the suspect assaulted the victim, possibly with one or more knives.  The victim ran outside his home, pursued by the suspect, and was found next door.

No police record of calls at the home involving any type of domestic problems has been found.  Investigators believe the father and son lived together in the residence.  No one else lived there and no one else was in the home when the altercation occurred today.

The investigation is continuing.

Shortly after the killing of an off-duty Maryland State Trooper outside a Forestville restaurant in 2010, the Seat Pleasant man now on trial for the fatal shooting told his friend, “That’s how I get down,” the friend testified Wednesday.
Cuffed and dressed in an orange prison outfit, Anthony Andre Milton II, 29, of Seat Pleasant recounted the night of June 10, 2010, when, he said, Cyril Cornelius Williams, 29, called him asking for a gun Williams had previously loaned him.
Within hours of the alleged call, Maryland State Trooper Wesley Brown, 24, was shot dead. Brown was working off-duty security at a Forestville Applebee's and was one of two security officers who escorted Williams outside earlier that night for allegedly being disorderly... http://www.gazette.net/article/20120216/NEWS/702169798&template=gazette

Maryland State Trooper Struck By Hit And Run Vehicle In Balto. Co.

Maryland State Police Press Release 01/15/2012 03:51

STATE TROOPER STRUCK BY HIT AND RUN VEHICLE IN BALTO. CO.

(RUXTON, MD) – A search is underway for a driver and vehicle that fled after hitting and injuring a Maryland state trooper while he was on a traffic stop early this morning on I-83 near Ruxton Road in Baltimore County.

The trooper is identified as Trooper First Class Jason M. James, 30, who is assigned to the Golden Ring Barrack and has been a member of the Maryland State Police for four and one-half years.

He was taken by ambulance to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where he is being treated for what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

The preliminary investigation indicates that shortly after 1:00 a.m. today, TFC James was on a traffic stop on northbound I-83, just north of Ruxton Rd. As the trooper was standing at the side of the stopped vehicle issuing a citation to the driver, he was struck by a northbound vehicle.

At this time, it is believed the trooper was struck by the mirror and side of the passing vehicle and was pushed into the car he had stopped. The trooper was able to call over his radio to report he had been struck.

The vehicle that struck the trooper did not stop and fled the scene. The suspect vehicle is described as a four-door passenger car, possibly gold or tan. No further description is known at this time.

The trooper was in uniform and was wearing a light-colored reflective jacket. The emergency lights and the spotlight on his car were activated at the time he was hit.

Anyone who may have seen this occur or who may have been northbound on I-83 in the area of Ruxton Road about 1:00 a.m. today is urged to contact the Golden Ring Barrack at 410-780-2700, then press ‘0’ to speak to the duty officer or police communications officer.
