A Jewish supporter of Councilman Joseph Bartenfelder's candidacy for county executive says she's been the target of a flier that claims Bartenfelder and one of his chief supporters are anti-Semites.

Ruth Goldstein, who lives in the Midfield community in Pikesville, said she received a small, cream-colored envelope in the mail Tuesday that looked like an invitation to an event.

"I felt like I had been violated," said Goldstein during a phone interview Wednesday.

After getting a copy of one of the fliers, Bartenfelder e-mailed a statement to reporters Wednesday evening.

Baltimore Co. police have identified man found in burning car

Baltimore Co. police have identified man found in burning car just outside Hampstead last week
March 18, 2010 By Kevin Dayhoff

Baltimore County police have identified that a Taneytown man was the victim of a vehicle fire last week. Officials say the man is John David Metcalf, 48, of the 4600-block of Buffington Lane.

The autopsy revealed no evidence that John David Metcalf had been the victim of a crime, say Baltimore County police.

The incident occurred last Friday about 1:42 a.m., as firefighters and police responded to a vehicle on fire in the 4600 block of Black Rock Road of Upperco in the northern Baltimore County, just across the county line from Hampstead, Carroll County.

At the time, a man found inside the burning car was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, the victim was identified from dental records. The police investigation revealed that “Metcalf had been ill just prior to leaving work. It appears that while driving home, he stopped on the parking lot of Grace United Methodist Church. While parked at the location, a fire started in the engine of the vehicle. The victim’s death was caused by the car fire.”

The car fire last Friday is one of a rash of similar incidents in recent memory.

The Eagle reported yesterday that it was “Arson (that) caused $26,000 in total damage to two cars and a school bus in Mount Airy on Twin Arch Road.

Various media reports indicate similar car fire incidents in the southern York County, Pa., the Parkton area in northern Baltimore County and just last spring there was another death as the result of a car fire in a church parking in Hampstead

Holt served in the House of Delegates from 1995 to 1999. Since leaving the House Republicans break his name out of their hermetically sealed container of potential candidates every few years and whisper that Holt is running for (insert office here).

Burns to offer bill prohibiting recognition of same-sex marriage

By Bryan P. Sears
Posted: January 14, 2010

Del. Emmett Burns said he plans to file a bill Thursday or Friday that will prohibit the state from recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states.

The Democrat and Baptist minister represents the 10th district, including Randallstown and Woodlawn, and has been a staunch opponent of same sex-marriage. Burns has sponsored several bills related to the issue over the last few years.

“I’ve fought this fight over the last 12 years,” Burns said. “Now with Washington D.C. approving (same-sex marriage), it’s needed more than ever.”

Burns said his bill will ban so-called foriegn marriages — unions performed out of state if the couples are of the same sex.

B P Sears: Baltimore Co Salary advisory board violated Open Meetings Act

Portion of discussion on raises should have been public, senior official said By Bryan P. Sears bsears@patuxent.com Posted 11/20/09

A salary advisory board violated the state Open Meetings Act, a senior county official said today.

The Baltimore County Personnel and Salary Advisory Board met Nov. 18 to recommend pay increases for the county executive and members of the County Council but did not open to the public an earlier unannounced meeting during which the particulars of their recommendations were discussed.

County Administrative Officer Fred Homan acknowledged in a brief phone call made to a reporter late Friday afternoon that the board violated the act by not opening the unannounced meeting.

“We do believe that, in fact, they did (violate the law) and we’re going to institute some training,” Homan said.

The county Office of Law began a review of the lawfulness of not making public the unannounced meeting after Patuxent Publishing Co., publisher of this Web site, raised questions with a county attorney.

Balto. Co. police spokesperson Bill Toohey to be replaced

In an article, County police spokesman to be replaced by uniformed officer -
Bill Toohey, in job for 13 years, 'surprised' at the news,”
in www.explorebaltimorecounty.com by Luke Broadwater and Bryan Sears, it has been revealed that the longtime Baltimore County police spokesperson, Bill Toohey, the Walter Cronkite of PIOs, has been released – the week before Thanksgiving - by Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson.

Candidly Chief Johnson missed a great opportunity; why not release the popular and well-known spokesperson on say, Thanksgiving Day, or better yet, why not Christmas Eve?

Nothing like starting the holiday season by peeing in the punch bowl.

Of course, there is never a good time to make a bad decision, so the week before Thanksgiving will have to do.

Messrs. Broadwater and Sears report, “… was ‘surprised’ by the announcement, according to several sources with knowledge of the decision…

“‘He’s retiring,’ Johnson said of Toohey, 64, a longtime radio reporter. ‘I’m reacting to his decision to retire…”

Yeah right. My advanced age allows me, for one, to know when someone is peeing on my leg and telling me it is raining. Great start for Mr. Toohey’s replacement, “Lt. Robert McCullough … who has headed the media division of the police department since 1996.”

Sometimes ya have to just shake your head and wonder what folks are thinking – or not; as the case may be.

The article quotes Chief Johnson to say, “Bill Toohey did an excellent job for the agency.”

“But sources said Toohey is looking for a job,” notes reporters Broadwater and Sears.

Mr. Toohey has always had the look and tonality that exuded depth and integrity. Although, I never covered Mr. Toohey, as a reporter, I always trusted that he was leveling with me, and as a news-consumer, he always presented as a straight shooter.

Meanwhile, Mr. Toohey, always a stand-up kind of guy, released a statement, according to writers Broadwater and Sears: “There comes a time for people to move on and new people to move in[.] That is what’s happening here. I have great respect for the men and women in this agency. If I can help with the transition, I certainly will.”

Four Injured In Multi-Vehicle Crash On I-795

NEWS RELEASE
DEPARTMENT OF
MARYLAND STATE POLICE
HEADQUARTERS: PIKESVILLE, MD 21208
(410)486-3101 TTY For Hearing Impaired (410)486-0677
Toll Free: 1-800-525-5555 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 10, 2009

FOUR INJURED IN MULTI-VEHICLE CRASH ON I-795

(Reisterstown, MD) – Four people were injured this morning in a six-vehicle crash on I-795 that occurred when a northbound vehicle crossed the median and struck five southbound vehicles.

The driver of the northbound 1999 Lexus 300 is identified as Antonio Martinez, 44, of Owings Mills, Md. Martinez was transported by ambulance to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he is currently in stable condition.

The driver of the first southbound vehicle is identified as Douglas A. Rill, 55, of Upperco, Md. He was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu and refused treatment at the scene.

The second southbound vehicle was a 1999 Ford F-350 pickup, operated by John Adams, Jr., 49, of Reisterstown, Md. Adams was transported by ambulance to Sinai Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The third southbound vehicle involved was a 2005 Chrysler 300, driven by Damon E. Secoski, 33, of Hanover, Pa. Secoski refused treatment at the scene.

The driver of the fourth southbound vehicle was Amanda B. Goodacre, 27, of Westminster. She was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry and was transported by ambulance to the Carroll Hospital Center with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the fifth southbound vehicle is identified as Maryland State Police Crime Scene Technician Danielle M. Goodnow, 26, who is assigned to the Forensic Sciences Division. She was driving a 2002 Chevrolet van, owned by the State Police and used as a crime lab vehicle.

Troopers from the Golden Ring Barracks were dispatched to southbound I-795 about one-half mile south of the Rt. 140 split shortly after 9:00 a.m. today. Troopers from the Maryland State Police CRASH Team also responded and are assisting with the investigation.

The preliminary investigation indicates that for unknown reasons, the northbound vehicle driven by Martinez crossed the grass median of I-795 and traveled into the southbound lanes. Martinez’s vehicle first struck Rill’s vehicle head-on, then began spinning and successively struck the four other vehicles before coming to rest in the median.

Due to the number of vehicles involved and the size of the crash scene, State Police had to close southbound I-795 for about two hours. Baltimore County Police and State Highway Administration personnel assisted with the road closures and detours. One lane of traffic was able to get by the scene by about 11:00 a.m. and the entire roadway was reopened shortly after noon.

Charges have not been placed at this time. No causes of the crash have been ruled out. Upon completion of their investigation, Maryland State Police investigators will present their findings to the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office for review and consultation regarding charges. The investigation is continuing.

Did Delegate Jones thumb her nose at a subpoena?

Did Delegate Adrienne A. Jones (D) District 10, Baltimore County, the current Speaker Pro Tem of the Maryland House of Delegates, thumb her nose at a subpoena…?

Please be advised that I am under the impression that the Maryland Democrat leadership in the Maryland General Assembly would rather that you NOT read this article by Explore Baltimore County writer Bryan P. Sears.

Jones stays home, but state attorney follows case to Pennsylvania

Former Ehrlich appointee ordered to testify for legislative committee

Baltimore County Del. Adrienne Jones was called to testify this morning in a York County, Pa., court by lawyers for a former political appointee of Republican former Gov. Robert Ehrlich.

But Dan Friedman, an assistant attorney general and counsel to the Maryland state legislature, said he advised Jones not to attend the hearing.

Instead, Friedman himself went to the York County courtroom, and was present when a Pennsylvania judge ordered Craig Chesek, a former state appointee under Ehrlich, to submit to be interviewed under oath by representatives of a Maryland Legislative Committee.

Meanwhile, Jones was at Chesapeake High School Thursday morning for a presentation of citations to county education leaders.

Friedman said Thursday afternoon “to say Del. Jones thumbed her nose at a subpoena is not fair to Del. Jones.”

Jones, a Democrat and co-chairwoman of the Special Committee on Employee Rights and Protections, was subpoenaed by a lawyer representing Chesek, a former state Public Service Commission employee. The committee formed in 2005 to look into alleged political firings after Ehrlich took office.

The subpoena came after Jones’ committee filed suit earlier this year in Pennsylvania in an attempt to force Chesek to return to Maryland to answer questions about alleged political firings of state employees after Ehrlich took office.
