NYT Can't Report Box-Office Receipts Without Blurting 'Mel Gibson, Anti-Semitic Drunk'

Nagourney Finds More Reasons for G.O.P. Pessimism: Lack of Leadership, Tea Partiers, Etc., Etc....
Chief political reporter Adam Nagourney spreads Republican pessimism on Sunday's front page: "At a moment of what appears to be great if unexpected opportunity, the Republican Party continues to struggle with disputes over ideology and tactics, as well as what party leaders say is an absence of strong figures to lead it back to power, from the party chairman to prospective presidential candidates."

Barack Obama: Just Too Much of a Complex Pragmatist for Today's Voters to Figure Out
Never mind that enormous health-care plan and "stimulus" spending, Obama's really a complex pragmatist who may be just too nuanced for today's politics: "On this much, President Obama's friends and foes could agree: He eludes simple labels. Yes, he's a liberal, except when he's not."

Jackie Calmes Twice Sees an Obama Goal of Budget 'Austerity'
No wonder it's so hard to cut federal spending: A limited "spending freeze" of $250 billion over three years, out of a 2001 budget of $3.8 trillion, is twice trotted out as a radical "austerity" measure.

NYT Can't Report Box-Office Receipts Without Blurting 'Mel Gibson, Anti-Semitic Drunk'
Checking the weekend receipts for Mel Gibson's dark thriller, "Edge of Darkness," arts writer Brooks Barnes reminded readers of the actor's "anti-Semitic outburst" and pondered: "Had moviegoers forgotten his rant and the subsequent tabloid brush fire? Many people in the movie business still harbor raw feelings about it." So, evidently, do "many people" at the Times.

Another Liberal Attack on Republican Patriotism
While the Times routinely rebukes Republicans for allegedly questioning the patriotism of Democrats, columnist Frank Rich is free to claim that Republican "John McCain epitomizes the unpatriotic opposition."

Krugman in his Monday column: "Whatever the reason, Mr. Obama has allowed the public to forget, with remarkable speed, that the economy's troubles didn't start on his watch." Barack Obama, quoted in the same edition: "We have had one year to make up for eight."

You don't say: "Journalism, art, fashion, social work and therapy are dominated by liberals," writes Patricia Cohen about a study claiming that conservative accusations of discrimination in academia are misguided.

The Times 'Ethicist' Said He'd Lie to Insurance Co., Plugs Universal Health Care
The Times liberal "ethics" columnist said he would "lie without remorse" to an insurance company asking a question about marijuana smoking, and worked in a plug for Obama-style health reform: "The real solution here is to guarantee access to medical care to all people, not just those pot-smoking liars."

Calling Massachusetts a Liberal State: Just a 'Political Stereotype'?
While Utah, Oklahoma, and any Deep South state is bluntly called conservative by the Times, the Times entertains doubts as to whether Massachusetts really qualifies as a liberal enclave. An alternate headline shows the Times clearly approves of at least one political stereotype, the “angry” red-state conservative: “In Reliably Blue State of Massachusetts, Pockets Red With Anger.”

Gail Collins Blames 'National Angst,''Bad Mood,' Florida Guppy Shortage for Coakley's Struggles in Mass.
Columnist Gail Collins, in denial: "Did you know that the cold snap in Florida hit the people who breed tropical fish so hard that there is a national guppy shortage? Things are bad, bad, bad. If Coakley loses, the inevitable conclusion will be that the message was a repudiation of Obama. My own theory is that the national angst is causing people to ignore the issues and just react to candidates' personalities."

Amazing Omissions in Times Interview of Barney Frank

A Times writer manages to talk to Barney Frank about Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and an SNL skit without bringing up a single challenging question.

Posted by: Clay Waters 3/26/2009 3:40:56 PM

The Times' special Deal Book section on Thursday featured a Q&A with Rep. Barney Frank by Times contributing writer Cyrus Sanati, "
Rep. Barney Frank's To-Do List for Changing Wall Street."

“Wall Street is bracing for a regulatory tsunami to make its way up from Washington. Lawmakers are considering sweeping changes to the Depression-era securities laws and regulatory agencies that failed to prevent the economic downturn.

“As these new proposals gain momentum, Representative Barney Frank, the Massachusetts Democrat who is chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, will have a central role in influencing the size and scope of these new regulations.”

That's the lead-in to an extremely friendly interview (described as "edited and condensed excerpts from the discussion") with the liberal Democrat Frank, who heads up the House Financial Services Committee and will have a hand in creating new regulations and laws on executive compensation.

Not one of Sanati's 10 questions were critical of Frank, and none delved into his controversial ties and strong defense in the past of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored mortgage lending companies, in their quest to ease up requirements for mortgage loans in the name of "affordable housing," which many experts think contributed to the mortgage crisis.

Sanati even asked Frank a question about Fannie and Freddie, but ignored Frank's previous support of the entities, captured by the Times itself in September 2003. At a hearing, Frank lectured that "these two entities, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, are not facing any kind of financial crisis....The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing."

Oops.

But Sanati ignored all that and painted Franks as some kind of Freddie and Fannie reformer:

“Sanati: Subprime mortgages played a large part in the downturn, as well as the need for the government to rescue the mortgage financing giants Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. In an op-ed in the Financial Times in 2007, you said, “The subprime crisis demonstrates the serious negative economic and social consequences that result from too little regulation.” What have you done since to tighten regulation of that market?”

In Frank's answer, Sanati let the congressman get away with passing the buck to the Bush administration:

“Frank: We passed shortly thereafter a bill that would prevent the type of subprime mortgages that went bad. Unfortunately, it never passed the Senate. I am returning to that now. Earlier in 2007 we passed legislation to improve the regulation of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, but the Senate didn’t get on to passing it until July 2008 and by that time it was too late. The problem was with George Bush in power. It was hard to get the approval we needed for the degree of regulation that we thought was necessary.”

Saturday Night Live mocked Frank in a skit that aired on the network on the night of October 4, 2008, putting some blame on Frank for the banking crisis, The official online version of the skit was later controversially http://pajamasmedia.com/rogerlsimon/2008/10/07/nbc-reactionaries-ban-inconvenient-snl-sketch/ redacted by NBC in a way that removed all mention of Frank. Bizarrely, Sanati talks about a Frank' impression on SNL -- but another one, one featuring a Frank impressionist chairing the Big 3 auto hearings, which aired on November 22, 2008 and didn't attract nearly as much attention as the banking skit.

“Sanati: Many Americans have been following your committee’s hearings -- so much so that even “Saturday Night Live” did a skit about them, featuring you grilling the Big Three automakers. How do you think they did in impersonating you?”

“Frank: I am impressed with Fred Armisen’s range given that he impersonates me and Barack Obama, so I guess that’s, um, sort of interesting. The only time I was upset was when they had someone doing me that was really fat.”

Inauguration Hypocrisy: NYT Chided Bush Gala, but Obamans Free to Party

What happened to the paper's 2005 anti-Bush criticism of a "lavish inaugural celebration in a time of war"?

Posted by: Clay Waters on www.timeswatch.org 1/16/2009 4:46:02 PM

At a time when the United States is fighting two wars and faces a severe recession and huge budget deficits, the inauguration of Barack Obama as the nation's 44th president is estimated to cost $45 million.

Bush's 2004 inauguration cost roughly $40 million. But though the figures are similar there's been a major shift in the tone of coverage at the Times.

While the Times spent much of January 2005 making clear its disapproval of Bush extravagantly celebrating his inauguration during wartime, that concerned tone is conspicuously absent from the Times in January 2009, although the country is not only still at war in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also in danger of a deep recession. The difference? Perhaps because this time, it's the Times' favored candidate who is readying to assume the highest office.

Frederick Maryland Online: An Hour from Baltimore

Frederick Maryland Online: An Hour from Baltimore

Frederick Maryland Online calls to our attention “a nice write up about Frederick” in the New York Times.

An Hour From Baltimore

November 23, 2008

From the New York Times Travel section (NYT requires a free registration to read the original article) a nice write up about Frederick (courtesy The Frederick Chamber of Commerce Twitter feed):

An Hour From Baltimore

Echoes of Yesteryear Not Far From Baltimore

By JOSHUA KURLANTZICK

Published: November 23, 2008

DRIVING out of
Baltimore, my home, I felt like the urban sprawl of shopping centers and rows of blighted homes would never end. But less than an hour west of the city, outside Frederick, Md., strip malls gave way to strips of giant trees turning autumn crimson, and the vista opened into broad plains, rolling hills and the occasional barn. By the time I crossed Frederick’s outskirts, where I saw brick colonial-looking homes and signs for local farms, I felt I’d arrived in a place far from the megacities of the Eastern Seaboard — like the frontier, but just off Interstate 70.

For many years, in fact, Frederick was the frontier. The town grew up as a trading post along America’s first trade arteries, and in the early days of the roads Frederick was as far west as you could go without worrying about highwaymen and battles between colonials and Native Americans.

New York Times Op Ed columnist suggests Bush turn the presidency over to Pelosi for a Thanksgiving present…

New York Times Op-Ed columnist Gail Collins has suggested that for Thanksgiving President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Chaney ought to resign and turn the president’s office over to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

No, this is not April Fools Day and to the best of knowledge, this is not a spoof.

And no this is not humor from The Onion or a Katie Couric dream sequence.

It’s well, read on…

Thanksgiving is next week, and President Bush could make it a really special holiday by resigning.

Gail Collins photo by Tony Cenicola/The New York Times

Seriously. We have an economy that’s crashing and a vacuum at the top. Bush — who is currently on a trip to Peru to meet with Asian leaders who no longer care what he thinks — hasn’t got the clout, or possibly even the energy, to do anything useful. His most recent contribution to resolving the fiscal crisis was lecturing representatives of the world’s most important economies on the glories of free-market capitalism.

Putting Barack Obama in charge immediately isn’t impossible. Dick Cheney, obviously, would have to quit as well as Bush. In fact, just to be on the safe side, the vice president ought to turn in his resignation first. (We’re desperate, but not crazy.) Then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would become president until Jan. 20. Obviously, she’d defer to her party’s incoming chief executive, and Barack Obama could begin governing.

TimesWatch Tracker: Poor, Dumb, Racist Southerners for McCain

TimesWatch Tracker: Our Latest Analysis Thursday, November 13, 2008

Poor, Dumb, Racist Southerners for McCain Adam Nossiter: "Southern counties that voted more heavily Republican this year than in 2004 tended to be poorer, less educated and whiter, a statistical analysis by The New York Times shows....Many of those counties, rural and isolated, have been less exposed to the diversity, educational achievement and economic progress experienced by more prosperous areas."

Cutesy Shop Liberated Me from the Bush Years Mike Albo: "If you feel as if you have been emotionally, professionally and politically run over by a tank for the last, say, eight years, then the well-selected, fun merchandise and carbonated energy of Fred Flare will bring a smile on your cautious, crabby face."

"Iraq War Ends": NYT Parody Issue Hits Streets of New York A Times parody sounds a bit like the wish-list of the Times editorial page: "Articles described a nation turned hard left: nationalized oil companies, a 'maximum wage' law, the enactment of national health insurance, President Bush indicted for treason and evangelical churches providing sanctuary for Iraqi refugees."

Doug Ross - Breaking: Obama agrees to a bailout of the New York Times

Doug Ross - Breaking: Obama agrees to a bailout of the New York Times

November 13, 2008

In case you missed it, last Tuesday Doug Ross broke the news that at the top of the list of economic initiatives for President-elect Obama is to safeguard the financial viability of the New York Times.

Breaking: Obama agrees to a bailout of the New York Times

Only hours after
Mediapost reported that The New York Times had a negative net worth, President-Elect Barack Obama announced a $5 billion bailout rescue package for the media concern. In a hastily arranged press conference at the newly constructed Office of the President-Elect, Obama noted the importance of the Times' ability to influence public opinion.

"It's not overstating things to say that I owe my presidency to the New York Times," he stated in his perfectly pitched, baritone voice.

The New York Times is junk

The New York Times is junk

Hat Tip: Don Surber: No time

October 24, 2008

My heart is breaking.

We maybe not so much.

Perhaps if Illinois Senator Barack Obama is elected president, he will add an extra-dedicated tax to go directly to support the New York Times.

After all; if he is successful on November 4th, 2008 – he will owe a great deal of his election victory to the New York Times, which has steadfastly carried the water for him at the cost of the further erosion of any credibility – and it’s heretofore legitimacy.

Mr. Surber suggests that the New York Times’ bond rating is not a reflection of its content and I’m not sure that I totally agree.

The New York Times, a member of the Lumbriculidae family of biased media, is at this point, a “Tempest Prognosticator” for a portion of the old-formerly elite media that lost its moorings and credibility during the 2008 presidential campaign. Other examples are NBC, MSNBC, and CNN.

A certain portion of its economic demise of the New York Times is a direct reflection of the fact that it has counted on surviving the fast-evolving changes in media by becoming a biased mouthpiece for limousine liberals, who only support their own care and feeding.

After it is used up, liberals will discard it just as they did Cindy Sheehan.

Nevertheless, ultimately I have no glee over the slow and painful demise of the paper. The New York Times has become the poster boy for everything that has gone wrong with the print media in the last decade and it has given all of us in the print media a black eye.

The only silver lining is that small community-oriented newspapers that are accountable, and have been flexible and adaptive, are seeing a resurgence.

Anyway, Don Surber said…

Bond raters: NYT is junk.

Standard & Poor has lowered NYT’s rating to BB-minus. In corporate bond trading that is junk, making the parent company of the New York Times a subprime borrower.

Moody’s said it will follow in dropping the rating.

Conservatives Brook No Dissent While Ignorant Evangelicals Ruin Movement

Why the conservative crackup? Reporter Patricia Cohen cites evangelicals: "...the disillusioned commentary of credentialed conservatives like Mr. Will, Mr. Buckley and Mr. Krauthammer may be the sound of a movement splintering at its foundation -- a movement whose intellectuals have long been uneasy with, for example, the rising power, in the Bush years, of evangelicals, with their categorical faith in creationism and distrust of scientific reason."

Columnist Blow Would Bet His Life on Obama Win

Charles Blow (pictured) is mightly confident in a Barack Obama victory: "If I'm wrong, I'll take my crow with a six pack of Liquid-Plumr."

Public Editor Admits Times Reporters Are More Liberal...

..but Clark Hoyt then cited a report saying "a link between reporters' political beliefs and news coverage has never been convincingly established."

Reporter Jodi Kantor aimed for a hit piece on Cindy McCain, but fawned over Michelle Obama.

Illinois Senator Barack Obama’s statement on last night’s vice-presidential debate

Illinois Senator Barack Obama’s statement on last night’s vice-presidential debate

Oh, my apologies. This was a New York Times The Vice-Presidential Debate editorial published: October 2, 2008

We cannot recall when there were lower expectations for a candidate than the ones that preceded Sarah Palin’s appearance in Thursday night’s vice-presidential debate with Joseph Biden. After a series of stumbling interviews that raised serious doubts even among conservatives about her fitness to serve as vice president, Ms. Palin had to do little more than say one or two sensible things and avoid an election-defining gaffe.

By that standard, but only by that standard, the governor of Alaska did well. But Ms. Palin never really got beyond her talking points in 90 minutes, mostly repeating clichés and tired attack lines and energetically refusing to answer far too many questions.

Senator Biden did well, avoiding one of his own infamous gaffes, while showing a clear grasp of the big picture and the details. He left Ms. Palin way behind on most issues, especially foreign policy and national security, where she just seemed lost. It was in those moments that her lack of experience — two terms as mayor of a tiny Anchorage suburb and less than two years as governor — was most painfully evident.

[…]

One can argue (and her supporters will) that Ms. Palin is a newcomer and can’t be expected to know all of the wonkish details, that what matters is the image she projects. Except, anyone who is running for vice president in these very dangerous times needs to have detailed knowledge.

[…]

In the end, the debate did not change the essential truth of Ms. Palin’s candidacy: Mr. McCain made a wildly irresponsible choice that shattered the image he created for himself as the honest, seasoned, experienced man of principle and judgment. It was either an act of incredible cynicism or appallingly bad judgment.
