NYT Aggressively Pushing Gun Control in Massacre Coverage, Promises More to Come

New York Times' Helene Cooper: Choose Between 2nd Amendment Rights or 'Kids [Being] Safe' at School
New York Times White House reporter Helene Cooper: "And if killing, you know, twenty 5- to 10-year-olds doesn't do it for this country, then than means the other conversation we should be having is just simply saying, 'You know what? The right for older people to bear arms is more important than the right of little kids to be safe when they go to school.'"

NYT Aggressively Pushing Gun Control in Massacre Coverage, Promises More to Come
The Times aggressively promoted Democrats exploiting the massacre to push for gun control legislation. "Democrats seemed to be hoping to seize on the momentum from the shooting, in which 20 first graders were killed, and the resulting outrage and despondency of millions of Americans, to gingerly build a coalition of lawmakers who might be able to create some form of compromise limits on gun sales or types." The Times also ran three editorials pushing gun control on Tuesday, and promised more to come.

The authorities have arrested a man who law enforcement officials believe was planning to build and detonate a bomb in New York with government workers, returning military personnel and elected officials as the target, two people briefed on the case said on Sunday.

Cyrus R. Vance Jr.,  the Manhattan district attorney, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly of the New York Police Department announced the charges against the man at a Sunday evening news conference at City Hall.

The man was arrested within the last 24 hours.

The defendant in the case, identified as Jose Pimentel, 27, had bought bomb-making materials and “began to build them,” said one person briefed on the case, who added that the Police Department had had the man under surveillance for about a year.

Police Begin Clearing Zuccotti Park of Occupy Wall Street Protesters

The New York Police Department began clearing Zuccotti Park of Occupy Wall Street protesters about 1 a.m. Tuesday, telling the people there that the camp would be “cleared and restored” before the morning and that any demonstrator who did not leave would be arrested.

The protesters resisted with chants of “Whose park? Our park!” as the police began moving in and tearing down tents. The protesters rallied around an area known as “the kitchen” and began building barricades with tables and pieces of wood.

Officers told the demonstrators that the city had “determined that the continued occupation of Zuccotti Park poses an increasing health and fire safety hazard.”

Adbusters seeks right of reply from New York Times

Adbusters Magazine: Adbusters seeks right of reply from New York Times

New York Times

Adbusters seeks right of reply from New York Times

Hey you jammers, dreamers and truth-tellers out there,

In the wake of #OCCUPYWALLSTREET, the corporate media have tried repeatedly to discredit the movement. We've been called every name in the book, but the lowest blow has come from the New York Times who have twice taken a nasty swipe at Adbusters. Now, they refuse to print the truth.

Go to Mondoweiss and check the fight we're having to exercise our right of reply.

And if you feel outraged by the Times' refusal to run our full letter then shout it, tweet it, and give it the rounds. Perhaps Executive Editor Jill Abramson might be swayed by a few emails telling her that it would be grossly unfair and against all journalistic standards for the New York Timesto deny Adbusters adequate right of reply. Be creative … do whatever you can to put some pressure on them to do the right thing.

It seems the real story here is that Adbusters has upset the pro-Israel and anti-Palestine bias that has marred the New York Times over many years in some of its editorials, columns and especially with the reporting by Isabel Kershner and the Times' Jerusalem bureau chief Ethan Bronner. Ms. Kershner and Mr. Bronner – who has a son who served in the Israeli army – both have deep ties to the Israel of today. Their often ahistorical, context-free reporting is partly to blame for what Adbusters has called "the United States of Amnesia."

A cultural shift is in order at one of the great newspapers of the world … and that just might start with them agreeing to print our letter.

for the wild,

It’s an important step that we hope you will see as an investment in The Times, one that will strengthen our ability to provide high-quality journalism to readers around the world and on any platform. The change will primarily affect those who are heavy consumers of the content on our Web site and on mobile applications.

This change comes in two stages. Today, we are rolling out digital subscriptions to our readers in Canada, which will enable us to fine-tune the customer experience before our global launch. On March 28, we will begin offering digital subscriptions in the U.S. and the rest of the world.

If you are a home delivery subscriber of The New York Times, you will continue to have full and free access to our news, information, opinion and the rest of our rich offerings on your computer, smartphone and tablet. International Herald Tribune subscribers will also receive free access to NYTimes.com.

This is how it will work, and what it means for you:

  • On our smartphone and tablet apps, the Top News section will remain free of charge. For access to all other sections within the apps, we will ask you to become a digital subscriber.
  • The Times is offering three digital subscription packages that allow you to choose from a variety of devices (computer, smartphone, tablet). More information about these plans is available atnytimes.com/access.
  • Again, all New York Times home delivery subscribers will receive free access to NYTimes.com and to all content on our apps. If you are a home delivery subscriber, go to homedelivery.nytimes.comto sign up for free access.
  • Readers who come to Times articles through links from search, blogs and social media like Facebook and Twitter will be able to read those articles, even if they have reached their monthly reading limit. For some search engines, users will have a daily limit of free links to Times articles.
  • The home page at NYTimes.com and all section fronts will remain free to browse for all users at all times.

Baltimore Reporter: Send this reporter to jail: An update

Send this reporter to jail: An update http://www.baltimorereporter.com/?p=7935

Below we note that when the New York Times published its December 2005 exposé of the secret National Security Agency electronic surveillance of al Qaeda-related communications, Times reporters James Risen and Eric Lichtblau granted anonymity to the “nearly a dozen current and former officials” who were the sources for the story.

Risen and Lichtblau stated that they had granted these sources anonymity “because of the classified nature of the program.” Implicit in the Times’s rationale was the recognition that leaks of such classified information are illegal, as indeed they are. They violate the espionage laws of the United States.

[...]

Read the rest here: http://www.baltimorereporter.com/?p=7935 - about half-way down in the story...

Read my Tentacle columns on Operation SHAFT from June 28, 2006 - Kevin E. Dayhoff: Once again, The New York Times has exposed another top secret anti-terrorism plan put in place to protect Americans. http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=1659

The Times, the favorite daily newspaper of al Qaeda, and quite possibly a satellite property of Aljazeera, has once again chosen to sell out our country’s national security interests in the furtherance of selling newspapers and supporting the media attack on the war in Iraq.

In an article published last Friday, entitled, “Bank Data Sifted in Secret by U.S. to Block Terror,” written by Eric Lichtblau and James Risen, the Old Grey Lady displays senile dementia and details a top secret classified program in which bank transactions – which may involve the transfer of funds for the purpose of promoting or supporting terrorist acts – are tracked and investigated. Read the entire column here: http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=1659

And this Tentacle column: Operation Mata Hari December 28, 2005 -Kevin E. Dayhoff: In the war against terrorism, folks, whose only goal is to promote themselves in total disregard for our safety, recently launched “Operation Mata Hari.” http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=1406

It began with shock and awe as insidious as an improvised explosive devise. The New York Times titled its December 16 Christmas gift to our nation, “Bush Lets U.S. Spy on Callers Without Courts.”

If you are just waking up from too much eggnog, the not-so-exotic New York Times article reveals – in the midst of a war – our commander-in-chief secretly authorized the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on U.S. citizens and others in the United States who were communicating with potential enemies overseas. Read the entire column here:http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=1406

Fake story meant to ensnare bloggers catches NYT instead

Fake story meant to ensnare bloggers catches NYT instead

And these clowns wonder why they are circling the drain? This lawyer pulled the fake story stunt to entrap us – political bloggers – because “fact checking is not” our “strong suit,” so he claimed. We ignored the story, and the NYT ran with it.

Gawker’s got a post, which also covers another false story the NYT ran with – but this blog one is just so rich. Let’s go to the source.

[...]

And, alas, here’s the retraction:

[...]

And as if it couldn’t get better. The lawyer turns out to be smug prick that learned something he probably didn’t want to know:

The basic idea was this: A bunch of law bloggers would try to punk the political bloggers, whose reputation is to grab any old rumor and run with it. Fact checking hasn’t always been the strong suit of this community.

But the political bloggers, to their collective credit, didn’t bite, despite wide dissemination of the story. Not on the right or the left. Instead it was the vaunted New York Times that ran with the story without bothering to check its facts. The Times, of course, had no sense of humor about it when the angry phone call came to me a couple of hours later.

So, he tried to punk us and instead found out that what we’ve been saying about the NYT has been true all along.

So funny.

Vatican Responds to NYT Accusations Against Pope Benedict XVI

Vatican Responds to NYT Accusations Against Pope Benedict XVI

Vatican Responds to NYT Accusations Against Pope Benedict XVI
Cardinal William Levada, a top Vatican official, issues a rare plea in response to Times coverage of how the Church handled several cases of alleged sexual abuse by priests, and what Joseph Ratzinger (who became Pope Benedict XVI) knew about the Church's response:

In an unusual move, last night the Vatican responded to several stories in the Times alleging that Joseph Ratzinger mishandled several sex abuse cases before he became Pope Benedict XVI, coverage that has thrown the international Church into turmoil.

The essay was penned by Cardinal William Levada, who succeeded the pope as head of the Vatican's doctrinal department. Levada made a plea for fairness for Pope Benedict under the headline “The New York Times and Pope Benedict XVI: how it looks to an American in the Vatican,” accusing Times religion reporter Laurie Goodstein “of anachronistic conflation” and of “rushing to a guilty verdict” against the Pope. Levada concluded:

As a full-time member of the Roman Curia, the governing structure that carries out the Holy See’s tasks, I do not have time to deal with the Times’s subsequent almost daily articles by Rachel Donadio and others, much less with Maureen Dowd’s silly parroting of Goodstein’s “disturbing report.” But about a man with and for whom I have the privilege of working, as his “successor” Prefect, a pope whose encyclicals on love and hope and economic virtue have both surprised us and made us think, whose weekly catecheses and Holy Week homilies inspire us, and yes, whose pro-active work to help the Church deal effectively with the sexual abuse of minors continues to enable us today, I ask the Times to reconsider its attack mode about Pope Benedict XVI and give the world a more balanced view of a leader it can and should count on.

The Times reacted to Levada's post in a story by Rachel Donadio in Thursday's edition.

Cardinal Levada singled out several Times reporters and columnists for criticism, focusing particularly on an article describing failed efforts by Wisconsin church officials to persuade the Vatican to defrock a priest who had abused as many as 200 deaf boys from 1950 to 1974. The pope, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, was head of the Vatican’s doctrinal office when the case was referred there, in 1996.

He said the article wrongly “attributed the failure to accomplish this dismissal to Pope Benedict, instead of diocesan decisions at the time.” On Wednesday, the archbishop of Milwaukee said the pope should not be held responsible for mistakes that were made in Wisconsin, according to The Associated Press.

....

News coverage of the abuse has clearly touched a nerve in the Vatican. As the church grapples with abuse cases that have come to light in several European countries, Benedict has come under scrutiny for how he and his subordinates handled sexual abuse allegations against priests while he served as an archbishop in Germany as well as when he was the Vatican’s top doctrinal enforcer.

1. Top Story: Dodd Calls Obama Plan Too Ambitious
----------------------------------------

Christopher J. Dodd, the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee,
warned that the Obama administration's new proposals to rein in Wall
Street firms ran the risk of derailing months of delicate negotiations
over overhauling financial regulations.

"It's not a movable feast," the chairman, Christopher J. Dodd, told
Paul A. Volcker, the former Federal Reserve chairman, who has become an
influential outside adviser to President Obama. "It's adding to the
problems of trying to get a bill done," he said at the end of a hearing
on the proposals, after all the other committee members had already
left, The New York Times reports.

Mr. Dodd, Democrat of Connecticut, added that the administration was
"getting precariously close" to excessive ambition for the legislation.
"I don't want to be in a position where we end up doing nothing because
we tried to do too much," he said.

Mr. Volcker pushed his plan on Tuesday to restrict the investment
activities of large banks, telling the Senate Banking Committee that
there was no "rationale for public funds -- taxpayer funds --
protecting and supporting essentially proprietary and speculative
activities."
