A native of the community, Ober was a 1944 graduate of Westminster High School, where he served as class president and received the Rotary Medal at graduation.  Ober interrupted his college education to serve as an aviation machinist’s mate in the U.S. Navy from February 1945 to April 1946.

He received his B.A. degree in Economics in 1949 from Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College which was named after his grandfather. He worked briefly at the Times Printing Company, followed by employment at Jameson and Barnsley Automobile Co.

In 1964 Ober began his banking career at Carroll County Bank and Trust Co. (now B.B.&T.) and later was promoted to vice president and comptroller.  During his banking career, he graduated from the Maryland-Virginia School of Bank Management (1967) and retired in 1992.

As a young man, Ober earned his pilot’s license and enjoyed aviation.  He was interested in model railroading, white water rafting, and hiking the Appalachian Trail with his sons and friends.  He and his wife also enjoyed travelling and sailing with their friends.

Surviving him in addition to his wife are their children and spouses, Karen and William Mallonee of Owensboro, KY; Stephen and Nancy Herr of Bend, OR;  and James and Katie Herr of El Dorado Hills, CA; brother and sister-in-law, William McD. and Lois Herr of Carbondale, IL; and 7 grandchildren (Michael, Daniel, Mandee, Andrew, Karah, Connor and Spencer) .  He was predeceased by his grandson, Logan D. By Mandy Meisner I say goodbye to someone special.
I wrote this eulogy for my grandfather.  He was 85 when he died, in general good health, sitting at his kitchen counter reading the mail. His last few years were spent taking care of his wife who is living with Alzheimer's.
Brian Gilson had been part of my life for as long I've lived.  From the day I came home through having children of my own, he had always been there.  But the truth is, I hardly knew him. He lived a long time and was many things to many people, I was privy to knowing only a slice of what would make up his life, one version in a long evolution.

L'Wren Scott, and the awful truth about women's obituaries-Well written By Stassa Edwards March 20, 2014 Just saying

Coverage of the fashion designer's passing was just the latest example of a sad journalistic tradition

By Stassa Edwards March 20, 2014

When news broke that respected fashion designer L'Wren Scott had passed away on Monday, The New York Times noted her suicide with the regrettable headline "Mick Jagger's Girlfriend Found Dead."

The Times wasn't alone in its faux pas; the Associated Press dutifully tweeted, "BREAKING: Law enforcement: Mick Jagger' [sic] girlfriend, L'Wren Scott, found dead in NYC of possible suicide." Though the AP managed to slip Scott's name in the headline of the report, both news organizations seemed to agree: Scott's death was newsworthy only because of her romantic association with a legendary rock and roller. Editors at neither The New York Times nor the Associated Press seemed to grasp that Scott's untimely death was newsworthy because of her professional accomplishments.

One would think that after the stroganoff incident, the Gray Lady in particular would have found a better way to note the passing of accomplished women, but it clearly hasn't. The poor handling of Scott's death speaks more broadly to the difficulty of recounting a woman's life — namely the determination of a hierarchy of facts, a project that should seem gender neutral but rarely is. It often seems natural enough to define women by their relationships — wife, mother, girlfriend, etc. — and let famous men be memorialized for their accomplishments, their family lives taking a backseat. This was certainly the case with the aforementioned stroganoff incident, in which the Times' obituary writers downgraded Yvette Brill from rocket scientist to pretty good cook.

I am so sad. Mitch was a wonderful friend. Mr. Alexander knew the history and traditions of Westminster, the college and the students really well. He knew how things worked and how to mesh together what was in the best interests of the students, the college and the town. Moreover, not only was he extremely bright, he was nice. He was great people and our hearts and prayers go out to his friends, loved-ones and family.

February 19, 2014

I learned today from my friend on Facebook, Mahlia Joyce that my dear friend Mitch Alexander has passed away from a heart attack… I am so sad and my heart and prayers go out to his family and friends. Mitch was a wonderful friend for many-many years. He was always good for a big hug, a huge smile and a kind word.

Dr. Ethan A. Seidel wrote:

Rest in peace Mitch...

We regret to inform the McDaniel community that Mitchell K. Alexander, director of Event Services, passed away today, Feb. 19, following a heart attack. He earned his bachelor’s degree in History with a minor in Education from WMC in 1980 and worked in Student Affairs as a part-time Decker Center building manager during the evenings and weekends. While an undergraduate here, he was named to Who’s Who Among American College Students and the recipient of the Lynn F. Gruber Leadership Award

After teaching middle school science for a year at Saint Francis Academy in Baltimore, Mitchell returned to the College as assistant director of College Activities. In 1986, he completed his master’s degree in School Administration. He left for a promotion in 1988 and served as director of Student Activities at Post College in Waterbury, Connecticut. He returned 16 months later to WMC as student activities director.

In a 1993 edition of the student newspaper, Mitchell was described as having, “the whole campus in his hands.” His legacy is one of empowering student groups to organize and create successful events for the campus community. More recently, his campus knowledge was invaluable for his expertise and guidance for event staging and set-ups.

He is survived by his wife Mildred Artis Alexander, class of 1981, and their two children, Blake and Paige.

Information regarding funeral services will be shared when available.

Ronald LeRoy Rognlien, 61, a retired defense contractor and world traveler with family ties to Westminster, died unexpectedly from a heart attack at his home in Warrenton, Va., on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013.

Born in 1952 in Baraboo, Wis.; he was the son of the late Stanley LeRoy Rognlien and the late Arlene Doris Jacobson Rognlien. After graduating with a degree in electrical engineering from Oregon State University, Mr. Rognlien followed in his father’s footsteps and served for 32 years as a defense contractor with the intelligence community -- a job that took him to some 68 countries over the years. His particular field of expertise was computer science and communications.

Mr. Rognlien married Marian Babylon in 1982 at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Westminster.

After retirement, Mr. Rognlien continued serving others through volunteer and mission service. He again traveled the world, this time for recreation, and spent time in Westminster with his extended family. He enjoyed fishing in Alaska, playing math and word games like Sudoku, and drove the Alcan Highway and across the United States several times.

In addition to his training as an electrical engineer, he was handy with tools and home improvement projects. He was a veteran of many mission trips with Taylorsville United Methodist Church, helping those who had suffered from natural disasters. Those mission included trips to Biloxi, Miss. after Hurricane Katrina and New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy.

He volunteered at numerous Carroll County civic and community functions. He was handy with a chainsaw and was among the Taylorsville “wood chuckers,” who cut firewood for the needy. He was a serious student of golf.

The family will receive friends at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, at 91 Willis Street, Westminster, MD on Monday, December 23, from 7 to 9 p.m.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 28 at 11 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 6194 Dumfries Rd., Warrenton, VA; with visitation starting at 10 a.m.  The Rev. Michael Church will officiate with a eulogy by The Rev. Sarah Dorrance.

New York Times Breaking News: Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap, Who Ousted U.S. From Vietnam, Is Dead

BREAKING NEWS Friday, October 4, 2013 11:38 AM EDT

Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap, Who Ousted U.S. From Vietnam, Is Dead

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/05/world/asia/gen-vo-nguyen-giap-dies.html?emc=edit_na_20131004&_r=0

Vo Nguyen Giap, the relentless and charismatic North Vietnamese general whose battlefield victory at Dien Bien Phu drove France out of Vietnam and whose tenacious resistance to the United States in a long and costly war there eventually sapped America’s political will to fight, died on Friday in Hanoi. He was believed to be 102.

The death was reported by several Vietnamese news organizations, including the respected Tuoi Tre Online, which said he died in an army hospital.

General Giap was among the last survivors of a generation of Communist revolutionaries who in the postwar decades freed Vietnam of colonial rule and fought a superpower to a stalemate. In his later years, he was a living reminder of a war that was mostly old history to the Vietnamese, many of whom were born after it had ended.
