Writer and author Joseph F. Steffen Jr., 57, died Fri. Jan. 27, 2017

Writer and author Joseph F. Steffen Jr., 57, died Fri. Jan. 27, 2017
By Jacques Kelly and Luke Broadwater, The Baltimore Sun, Feb. 1, 2017 http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/obituaries/bs-md-ob-joseph-steffen-20170201-story.html

Joseph F. Steffen Jr., a Republican political operative who enjoyed describing himself as the "Prince of Darkness," died of coronary disease Friday at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. The Dundalk resident was 57.

His daughter Jennifer Steffen, with whom he lived, said her father suffered two strokes several years ago.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Reisterstown, he was the son of Joseph F. Steffen Sr., a machinist, and Anne Steffen. He attended Sacred Heart School and was a 1977 Franklin High School graduate. He then did odd jobs before he began working as a speechwriter in Republican politics.

"He was noticed for an article he wrote in a Reisterstown newspaper, and went on to work for [conservative figures] Linda Chavez and Richard Viguerie," his daughter said. "On the basis of that initial article, he was noticed by the National Conservative Action Committee, and at age 23, he became a press secretary for it."

Mr. Steffen was best known for his work in the rough-and-tumble world of Maryland politics, including more than a decade working for former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.

April 11, 1992 Dr. L. Earl Griswold, professor at Western Maryland

April 11, 1992 Dr. L. Earl Griswold, professor at Western Maryland Obituary

http://kevindayhoffwestgov-net.blogspot.com/2016/04/april-11-1992-dr-l-earl-griswold.html

Dr. Griswold was a fixture at the Westminster United Methodist Church. I grew up in the Westminster United Methodist Church and spent much of my childhood, going back to the 1950s, at Western Maryland College – now McDaniel. I have the vaguest memories of Old Main…. Up until the early 1970s, the college was affiliated with the Methodist Church. I was part of the first summer church camps that were integrated at the college. And I have fond memories of talking with Dr. Ensor about the integration of the college.

I have very clear and fond memories of Dr. Griswold. In addition to my memories of Dr. Griswold at church and up at the college, he was also the dad of a Westminster High School Class of 1971 classmate.

He was very kind and always had time for those of us who had a keen interest in the college and the academic – and religious worldview. I was especially intrigued with his films – and his interest in traveling and documenting his travels.

I use many things I learned from Dr. Griswold – to this day. We should never forget the folks who went before us and paved the way for the infrastructure and community we enjoy today.

I had saved a place in my writing schedule to write about him upon the anniversary of his death, but once again, this year, current events have overtaken that opportunity. Perhaps I’ll do it anyway out of linear sequence. I’m not much a fan of linear history anyway. Just saying. God Bless you and your work, Dr. Griswold…..

Services for L. Earl Griswold, retired chairman of the sociology department at Western Maryland College, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Westminster United Methodist Church.

Dr. Griswold, who was 71, died Thursday after an apparent heart attack at his home in Westminster. He retired five years ago as chairman of the sociology department, and had taught courses in anthropology at the college since 1956.

In the 1970s, he made films, many of them on deafness and others on anthropological research in conjunction with the college, and also promotional films for Carroll County and other Maryland subdivisions.

In 1972, one of the films on deafness, "They Grow in Silence," won an award from the Public Broadcasting System. The college for many years has had an extensive degree program accommodating deaf students.

[…]

During World War II, he flew B-17s in Europe for the Army Air Corps. He was a psychological warfare officer for the Air Force during the Korean War.

McDaniel graduate and Ocean City Realtor Robert Warfield Sr. died Jan. 29, 2016

I recently learned that my distant relative, Robert Warner died on Jan. 23, 2016 of an aneurysm in Ocean City at the age of 75.

Mr. Warfield attended Western Maryland College, now McDaniel, where I had the pleasure of enjoying his company on a number of occasions, including the dedication of the Warfield Tennis Courts on October 29, 2005.

I also served with him on the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund committee in the early 2000s when I was an elected official with the city of Westminster. We were both appointed by our friend, Gov. Robert L. Erhlich.

We were distant relatives. We both descended from one of five Warfield brothers that settled in central-Maryland in the 1600s, in the area we know today where Montgomery, Howard, Frederick, and Carroll County meet. According to unsubstantiated oral tradition, we could both trace our ancestry back to Gov. Edwin Warfield, 1904-1908 (Democrat.)

Mr. Robert was bright and charming, and had a sense of old-school grace and manners that was compelling and charismatic. Above all, not only was he quite capable and competent, he was nice.

My colleague at the Baltimore Sun, Jacques Kelly, wrote a fitting tribute to him on January 29, 2016:

Robert E. Warfield Sr., Ocean City real estate firm co-owner

Robert E. Warfield Sr., a former co-owner of an Ocean City real estate firm and a McDaniel College trustee, died of an aneurysm Jan. 23 at his Ocean City home. He was 75.

Born in Silver Spring, he was the son of Lt. Col. William Edwin Warfield, who died in the invasion of Normandy in 1944, and Esther Stanley.

He was a Montgomery Blair High School graduate and received a degree in economics from Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College. He played football and golf, and wrestled. He was also a member of the Alpha Gamma Tau fraternity.

He met his future wife, Margaret Ann "Peggy" Hoey, at a sock hop during their freshman year.

"We've been dancing ever since," she said. "Bobby always did the right thing."

Mr. Warfield served as a second lieutenant in the Army and was assigned to its 29th Division in Korea.

David Bowie dies at 69; mesmerizing performer and restless innovator
Washington Post - By Tara Bahrampour January 11, 2016

David Bowie, the self-described “tasteful thief” who appropriated from and influenced glam rock, soul, disco, new wave, punk rock, and haute couture, and whose edgy, androgynous alter egos invited fans to explore their own dark places, died Jan. 10, two days after his 69th birthday.

Worth repeating: November 02, 1990 The Obits and the News By Ernest B. Furgurson

Worth repeating: November 02, 1990 The Obits and the News By Ernest B. Furgurson http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/1990/11/november-02-1990-obits-and-news-by.html

November 02, 1990 The Obits and the News By Ernest B. Furgurson

NEW YORK. — New York. - IN JANUARY 1928, they electrocuted Ruth Snyder, the first woman sent to the chair in New York. Most of Manhattan's newspapers ran columns of purple prose about it. Page 1 of the Daily News told the story in one word and one picture.

The word, in huge type, was DEAD! The blurred picture below it was of Snyder at the instant the shock hit her -- taken by photographer Tom Howard with a hidden camera strapped to his ankle.

http://articles.baltimoresun.com/images/pixel.gif
That may have been the News' most famous front page, at least until the one in 1975 when the president refused to bail the city out of its financial crunch. The headline that day was was FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD.

The word ''dead'' has figured often in the 71-year-history of the News; the paper has specialized in crime reporting, and printed the best. But for the past week, since a long-feared strike began, some of its own employees have become actors instead of narrators in a running crime story.

Starting with the first editions after the strike began, competing papers have covered it as if the News itself were on its death bed, as it may be. There are three tabloids in New York, and the common wisdom is that not more than two can survive. If the strike and management's determination to break the unions does kill the News, one of those rivals might have the bad taste to run its own gleeful headline proclaiming the News DEAD!

That would be the Post, once stodgily liberal, now wackily conservative, catering to readers downscale from the News' hard-core blue-collar fans. The other, more upscale, is New York Newsday, the Manhattan sister of Long Island's Newsday (owned by Times-Mirror, which also owns the Baltimore Sun).
