Tim Padgett - Time Two Wrongs and the Right

Two Wrongs and the Right: Overreaction to Conservatives Leads Liberals to Hypocrisy

By TIM PADGETT | March 12, 2012

[…]

They were at it last week when commentators like my former TIME colleague Karen Tumulty of the Washington Post or Kirsten Powers of The Daily Beast dared suggest that male media personalities on the left – like Matt Taibbi, Keith Olbermann or Bill Maher, who called Sarah Palin a “c—” on his HBO show last year – are themselves guilty of misogyny. Rather than swallow their ideological pride for a moment, too many liberals, including more than a few leading feminists, have dug in like the Vatican and refused to acknowledge that their side too can be wrong or unfair. Or, as in the case of Maher, who just gave $1 million to a super PAC backing President Obama, as boorish as Rush Limbaugh.

Yes, there are qualifications. Limbaugh is a powerful gazillionaire radio show bully who beat up a powerless student on the air, while Maher targeted a powerhouse political celeb who was almost one heart-beat from the presidency and blasts her own opponents as if they were so many moose. Maher, like Limbaugh, apologized for his remarks last week while defending their right to speak their minds. But this isn’t about the First Amendment; it’s about the ugly loss of civility in American discourse. The bottom line is that publicly calling any woman the “c” word is the sort of knuckle-dragging stuff for which Maher so sanctimoniously lambastes the gun-loving, NASCAR-watching, church-going heartland on “Real Time.” Maher’s left-wing defenders, meanwhile, argue that he’s an entertainer – seemingly oblivious to the fact that right-wing presidential hopeful Rick Santorum made the same excuse for Limbaugh… http://swampland.time.com/2012/03/12/two-wrongs-and-the-right-overreaction-to-conservatives-leads-liberals-to-hypocrisy/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+timeblogs%2Fswampland+%28TIME%3A+Swampland%29&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher

CNSNews: Obama Supported Higher Gas Prices in 2008, but Now? ‘I Want to Get Gas Prices Lower’

Obama Supported Higher Gas Prices in 2008, but Now? ‘I Want to Get Gas Prices Lower’

(CNSNews.com) – President Barack Obama mocked a suggestion that he wants higher gasoline prices during an election year, although as a candidate in 2008 he suggested that higher prices might be desirable if there was a “gradual adjustment.”

During a news conference Tuesday, Fox News reporter Ed Henry asked Obama, “Your critics on Capitol Hill will say that you want gas prices to go higher because you have said before that will wean the American people off fossil fuels on to renewable fuels. How do you respond to that?”

Obama dismissed the question as ridiculous: …

On June 10, 2008 in an interview with CNBC’s John Harwood, then-candidate Barack Obama said, “Well, I think that we have been slow to move in a better direction when it comes to energy usage. And the president, frankly, hasn't had an energy policy. And as a consequence, we've been consuming energy as if it's infinite. We now know that our demand is badly outstripping supply with China and India growing as rapidly as they are.” … http://cnsnews.com/news/article/obama-supported-higher-gas-prices-2008-now-i-want-get-gas-prices-lower

The Rush To Censor Limbaugh | Fox News: http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/03/05/rush-to-censor-limbaugh/

Published March 05, 2012
| FoxNews.com

Rush Limbaugh was broadsided last week for attacking a star witness for the Democrats who demanded government force insurers to subsidize contraceptives. He called 30-year-old Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute.”

Let’s all agree Limbaugh crossed a line.

He agrees. He posted an apology to Fluke “for the insulting word choices.” ... http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/03/05/rush-to-censor-limbaugh/

The scandal-ette should be over.

So why are the Left and the media still pushing and publicizing a campaign for advertisers to dump the Limbaugh show and end his career?

Because it has little to do with his words. This is all about disingenuous politics. Liberals want this government-mandate controversy to be not about religious liberty, which is devastating, but about contraceptives, which works in their favor.

That is intellectually dishonest.

They want to position conservatives as “anti-women.” That’s as ugly as it is untrue. ... http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/03/05/rush-to-censor-limbaugh/

Don Surber commentary: Rush apologizes

Rush apologizes

March 3, 2012 by Don Surber

Do I get result or not? Forget boycotts and the like, when I speak Rush Limbaugh listens. I called on him at 7 AM to apologize.

For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.

I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress…

[…]

What happened was simple: He tried to use a lefty way to counter what a lefty did. He tried to demonize her like the left did with Sarah Palin but he could not get away with that because…

[…]

The Left will not forgive or forget this incident which means, of course, absolutely nothing. It does not matter if they accept the apology. Let them chatter among themselves. Let them distort what he says because heaven forbid if the Left accurately quoted him. Really, who cares what people on the Left think?

But fairness required an apology. It matters what we conservatives think about him and about ourselves.

(CNSNews.com) – Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) said he is not sure whether President Barack Obama agrees with his Energy Secretary’s goal to keep gas prices high, but he does think the president is in favor of lower prices, “at least for election day.”

During a press briefing on Thursday at the Capitol, Boehner was asked if he thinks Obama’s energy policies are intended to drive up oil prices, as some of Boehner’s fellow Republicans have implied.

“Well, with Secretary [Steven] Chu, who’s made it pretty clear that his goal is to have higher energy prices, I think that’s what a lot of our members were cueing off of,” Boehner said.

“I’m not sure that the president believes that higher energy prices are what he wants,” said Boehner. “And clearly after my discussion with him yesterday, I think he would prefer to see lower gas prices -- at least for Election Day.”

[…]

During his press conference Boehner noted that gas prices have doubled since the president has been in office, and said Republicans had worked to lower gasoline prices by supporting, for instance, the Keystone XL pipeline.

Secret U.S. Memo Made Legal Case to Kill a Citizen

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/09/world/middleeast/secret-us-memo-made-legal-case-to-kill-a-citizen.html

The Obama administration’s secret legal memorandum that opened the door to the killing of Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born radical Muslim cleric hiding in Yemen, found that it would be lawful only if it were not feasible to take him alive, according to people who have read the document.

The memo, written last year, followed months of extensive deliberations and offers a glimpse into the legal debate that led to one of the most significant decisions made by President Obama — to move ahead with the killing of an American citizen without a trial.

The memo provided the justification for acting despite an executive order banning assassinations, a federal law against murder, protections in the Bill of Rights and various strictures of the international laws of war, according to people familiar with the analysis. The memo, however, was narrowly drawn to the specifics of Mr. Awlaki’s case and did not establish a broad new legal doctrine.

News Alert: Secret memo sanctioned targeting of Aulaqi, officials say
September 30, 2011 8:28:06 PM
----------------------------------------

The Justice Department wrote a secret memorandum authorizing the lethal targeting of Anwar al-Aulaqi, the American-born radical cleric who was killed by a U.S. drone strike Friday, according to administration officials. The document was produced following a review of the legal issues raised by striking a U.S. citizen and involved senior lawyers from across the administration. There was no dissent about the legality of killing Aulaqi, the officials said.

“What constitutes due process in this case is a due process in war,” said one of the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss closely held deliberations within the administration.

Kids have the day off because the district knew that the teachers would be calling in sick in order to participate in a political demonstration.

District Superintendent Dan Nerad made the announcement at 11 p.m. Tuesday after 40 percent of the 2,600 members of the teacher's union had called in sick and more were expected to do so through Wednesday morning...

As teachers beamed and offered thanks, student organizers in the hallways handed out signs identifying each as a "future worker, future voter," proclaiming this was a "Walk out for Walker out," and calling on the Legislature to "kill this bill."

Kill the bill? Remember when the Tea Party gathered at the US Capitol and chanted "kill the bill" the day the health care bill was passed? That was considered terribly violent. .. http://althouse.blogspot.com/2011/02/madison-schools-close-for-day-to-allow.html

Newsbusters: Network Double Standard: Obama's TSA vs. Bush's NSA

While the broadcast networks have generally empathized with the distress of airline passengers over the TSA’s new and intrusive airport searches, they have not — thus far, at least — gone so far as to impugn the Obama administration as launching a war against Americans’ civil liberties.

Indeed, NBC’s Matt Lauer on Monday even sympathized with TSA Administrator John Pistole: “I hate to even think of what happens if the government caves in on this, and relaxes these procedures, and someone manages to get something on board a plane and causes harm. Imagine the questions you'll be asked at that point.”

But that’s not the approach those networks took when it was the Bush administration taking steps to protect citizens against potential attack. Instead, as a 2006 analysis by the Media Research Center documented, the networks firmly aligned themselves with those who saw the Patriot Act and the electronic surveillance of international phone calls as a dire threat to civil liberties.

National Public Radio is right to defend itself against charges of Nazism leveled at the radio station by Fox News chief Roger Ailes, who has since apologized for the remark. But NPR decided to make the leap from defending the station to attacking Fox News as uniquely disposed to Nazi comparisons, an absurd claim on its face.
There are commentators on both sides of the political spectrum who routinely prove Godwin right. But being the predictably-liberal news outlet that it is, NPR invoked vague claims by far-left Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank (neither his ideological leanings nor the multitude of his most recent baseless Fox accusations are mentioned) to paint FNC as unique in its invocation of Nazism.

David Gregory is clearly concerned that if Republicans don't vote in favor of the START treaty with Russia, President Obama's international image, as well as American prestige abroad, will be damaged.
On Sunday's "Meet the Press," Gregory asked Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, "Is this going to potentially be a problem with the president not being able to get what he wants on the world stage because of Republicans?"

Washington Post: Dispute over New Black Panthers case causes deep divisions

"Security" patrols stationed at polling places in Philly

Dispute over New Black Panthers case causes deep divisions

Washington Post Staff Writers

On Election Day 2008, Maruse Heath, the leader of Philadelphia's New Black Panther Party, stood in front of a neighborhood polling place, dressed in a paramilitary uniform.

Within hours, an amateur video showing Heath, slapping a black nightstick and exchanging words with the videographer, had aired on TV and ricocheted across the nation.

Among those who saw the footage was J. Christian Adams, who was in his office in the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division in Washington.

"I thought, 'This is wrong, this is not supposed to happen in this country,' " Adams said. "There are armed men in front of a polling place, and I need to find out if they violated the law, because in my mind there's a good chance that they did."

The clash between the black nationalist and the white lawyer has mushroomed into a fierce debate over the government's enforcement of civil rights laws, a dispute that will be aired next week when the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights unveils findings from a year-long investigation.

Two months after Election Day, Adams and his supervisors in the George W. Bush administration filed a voter-intimidation lawsuit against Heath and his colleagues, even though no voters had complained. The Obama administration months later dismissed most of the case, even though the Panthers had not contested the charges... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/10/22/AR2010102203982.html?wpisrc=nl_natlalert

Jerry Brown announces NOW endorsement one day after Meg Whitman slur

October 8, 2010 |  2:05 pm
Jerry Brown announced he has received the endorsement of the National Organization for Women, less than 24 hours after the emergence of a recorded message in which Brown can be heard in a conversation with advisors in which someone calls Whitman a "whore." Coincidence? You be the judge.
Whitman's campaign pounced after the audio was made public, sending out a release Thursday night from spokeswoman Sarah Pompei calling the use of the term "an insult to both Meg Whitman and to the women of California.  This is an appalling and unforgivable smear against Meg Whitman.  At the very least Mr. Brown tacitly approved this despicable slur and he himself may have used the term at least once on this recording."
As if on cue, Brown's campaign Friday released the endorsement from NOW championing Brown's record on women's rights.  "As Governor, Mayor, and Attorney General, Jerry Brown has promoted and defended women’s rights,” said California NOW President Patty Bellasalma...  http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/california-politics/2010/10/jerry-brown-announces-now-endorsement-one-day-after-meg-whitman-slur.html

The proposed reforms area step in the right direction -- for everyone but Nancy Pelosi: House leaders are revamping the rules for lawmakers and aides who travel overseas on official government business, forbidding them to fly in business class on shorter trips, use taxpayer funds to buy gifts or pocket unspent cash, among other changes. The new travel rules, proposed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, also strengthen accountability and oversight for taxpayer-funded trips. But the rules don't require lawmakers to disclose some of the biggest costs of such trips, including travel by military plane, which can double or triple the total costs. Funny that Pelosi didn't require disclosure of the cost of military travel. Is that because Pelosi flys around on military aircraft at...

In 2005, the National Intelligence Council prepared a prescient report warning that overextended welfare states could lead to economic crisis and possibly the collapse of the European Union sometime in the next 15 years: The experts felt that the current welfare state is unsustainable and the lack of any economic revitalization could lead to the splintering or, at worst, disintegration of the European Union, undermining its ambitions to play a heavyweight international role. Yet another example of public sector employee union smash and grab, at a time when private sector workers are desperate for jobs: The Obama administration on Thursday threw its support behind a $23 billion measure intended to avert large-scale teacher layoffs, urging Congress to include the effort in a spending bill lawmakers are drafting to fund wartime costs and other urgent needs. "We are gravely concerned that ongoing state and local budget challenges are threatening hundreds of thousands of teacher jobs for the upcoming school year," Education Secretary Arne Duncan wrote in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). Duncan added: "These budget cuts would also undermine the groundbreaking reform efforts under way in...

For the second straight year, Gallup says more Americans identify themselves as pro-life than pro-choice: The conservative shift in Americans' views on abortion that Gallup first recorded a year ago has carried over into 2010. Slightly more Americans call themselves "pro-life" than "pro-choice," 47% vs. 45%, according to a May 3-6 Gallup poll. This is nearly identical to the 47% to 46% division found last July following a more strongly pro-life advantage of 51% to 42% last May. The trend is pronounced enough that Gallup's headline says a pro-life majority is "the new...

It is good to be back in New York City, and it is good to be following Nancy Pelosi. New York is a tough town, but Nancy Pelosi -- that's one tough lady. (Applause.) That is one tough lady. Surprise! CalPERS, California's ginormous public pension fund that's playing an outsize role in the state's fiscal armageddon, now says they're going to need $600 million more than last year: CalPERS, the huge public employee pension fund, is set to consider a $600 million hike in what California pays next year to cover state worker pensions. The fund's actuaries are recommending that its board tell the state to kick in $3.9 billion for the fiscal year that starts July 1. That would be a $600 million increase over this year and $400 million more than Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger planned in the first draft of his 2010-11 budget proposal. CalPERS staff figures the fund needs the increase to compensate for investment losses, longer member life expectancies and an edict by the...

Stanley McChrystal ruled out even that because it raised expectations for a “D-Day and an H-Hour and an attack.” McChrystal wants...
