Kevin Spacey's old-Hollywood values shape cutting-edge 'House of Cards' - Baltimore Sun

Kevin Spacey's old-Hollywood values shape cutting-edge 'House of Cards' - Baltimore Sun:

[...]

"Even though Spacey is the face of a production that defines the new way TV is being made and watched today, he said his performance started with an appreciation of the past — in this case, the work of the late Ian Richardson, who starred in the original “House of Cards” for the BBC in 1990.

That series, which was adapted from a book by Michael Dobson, featured Richardson’s character talking directly to the audience, as Spacey’s does in “House of Cards.”

“What a great actor and performance,” he said of Richardson as Francis Urquhardt, a wickedly manipulative leader in Parliament.

“The great thing about the original series and Michael Dobson’s book is that they were based on Shakespeare. The direct address is absolutely ‘Richard III.’ ”"

NEW YORK — The green shoes.

That’s what caught my eye as I sat down across from Kevin
Spacey at the Regency Hotel last week and took a mental snapshot of his outfit
before asking the first question.

Neat, gray pinstriped suit, with a charcoal shirt open at
the collar — and green shoes.

And you know what? He made it work. Spacey looked great.

Unlike many film and TV stars, though, Spacey’s appeal is
far more than skin-deep. As much style as he has, the artistic and intellectual
substance of Kevin Spacey is what impresses most.

Maryland's Business Climate
Improving Business Competitiveness Is Topic of Dec. 17 Fundraiser
With Featured Speakers Gov. Bob Ehrlich and Sec. Larry Hogan
Marylanders for Joe Getty

December 6, 2013

When I served as policy director for Gov. Bob Ehrlich, we placed a strong emphasis in our legislative package each year on improving Maryland's business climate. The Ehrlich Administration wanted to make sure that companies throughout the United States knew that Maryland was "Open for Business."

We worked hard to insure that Maryland provided an excellent business environment so that existing businesses could thrive and to encourage out-of-state businesses to relocate their operations here.

My fundraiser "Maryland's Business Climate" on Dec. 17 will include Gov. Bob Ehrlich and Secretary Larry Hogan of Change Maryland to discuss trends and issues facing Maryland if we are to improve our state's competitiveness with our neighboring states (see flyer on reverse).

One of the keys to improving the business climate is tax policy. Gov. Ehrlich drew a line in the sand against increasing Maryland's personal income tax although this was a high priority for the Democrat leadership in the legislature from 2003-06. The Ehrlich Administration's economic development policy also included measures to reduce regulations and improve Maryland's competitiveness.

Our efforts were very successful based upon The Tax Foundation's annual "State Business Tax Climate Index." Under Gov. Ehrlich's business and tax policies, Maryland moved from 31st to 22nd best business climate in the nation.

Unfortunately, over the last seven years, Maryland's business climate ranking has plummeted. At the peak of the O'Malley Brown Administration tax increases in 2009-10, Maryland was the sixth worst business climate in the country. In the recently released 2014 rankings, Maryland marginally improved to the ninth worst.

The states in the bottom ten suffer from the same afflictions: complex, non-neutral taxes with comparatively high rates. The leading factor in Maryland's decline is our 46th highest individual income tax rates. Being the only state in the nation to adopt a "rain tax" further compounds Maryland's poor reputation among the nation's top businesses.

In a recent presentation to the Maryland Rural Counties Coalition, economist Anirban Basu said that such rankings do not tell the true story. In his experience working within the nation's business community, the word-of-mouth perceptions of Maryland's bad business climate are far worse than the rankings show.

Thus it is no surprise that Texas Gov. Rick Perry saw Maryland as easy pickings in an economic development advertising campaign to lure Maryland businesses to the "Lone Star" state. "We pray for rain in Texas," Perry said. "They tax rain in Maryland."

I recently accepted a change in committee assignments to Senate Budget & Tax so that I can have a role in influencing state tax policy. I invite you to join us on Dec. 17 as we explore many options available to improve Maryland's business climate.

America: Hope for Change
Gov. Bob Ehrlich to Autograph His New Book at Our Dec. 17 Fundraiser
Marylanders for Joe Getty

December 10, 2013

In his book released last month America: Hope for Change, Gov. Bob Ehrlich sets forth a conservative political agenda to set our country back on the "right" track instead of the "wrong" track.

By stressing the individual freedoms and self-autonomy that has made America great, Gov. Ehrlich provides an analysis of our national fiscal crisis and debt, healthcare delivery, job creation, social security and national security. Through his experiences as a Congressman and Governor of Maryland, Ehrlich provides insights that focus on policy solutions to strengthen American culture and economic opportunity.

Gov. John H. Sununu, former New Hampshire Governor and White House Chief of Staff under Pres. George H.W. Bush, describes the book as follows: "Bob Ehrlich makes the case for why America must, aggressively and quickly, fight to reverse the growth and excessive intrusion of the federal government into the lives of all citizens. He makes a clear case that the basic strengths that made America the land of opportunity are being destroyed. The Governor does a great job in defining the problem, the subtleties of the erosion of the system, and then proposes an agenda to fix the system."

Our fundraiser on Dec. 17, 2013 will feature a book-signing by Gov. Ehrlich. You can also receive a complimentary author-inscribed copy of America: Hope for Change by making a contribution to our campaign.

Please join us on Dec. 17, 2013 with speakers Gov. Bob Ehrlich and Secretary Larry Hogan of Change Maryland.

The Long-Term Effects of Obamacare
Gov. Bob Ehrlich's Chapter on Obamacare Provides Insights
On Pres. Obama's Healthcare "Agenda"
Marylanders for Joe Getty

December 10, 2013

The current Obamacare debate being played out daily in the national media focuses on the failed mechanics of websites and apathetic enrollment numbers. But what are the long-term effects of Obamacare?

In the chapter "Securing a Healthcare Agenda, Not Quality Healthcare" from his book America: Hope for Change, Gov. Bob Ehrlich provides insights on what Americans may face in the coming years as Obamacare becomes the rule of the land in local hospitals and doctors' offices.

"It is impossible to predict the nature and extent of the regulatory burden represented by a fully implemented Obamacare. One outcome is acknowledged by all sides, however: many of the important decisions will not be made by the democratically elected representatives of the people. Instead, they will be issued by an army of unelected, unaccountable regulators. Such is the legacy of the Obama administrative state . . . the newly empowered Obama bureaucracy enjoys degree of power over the personal decision making authority of ordinary people never before seen in our history," is just one observation made by Gov. Ehrlich.

Our fundraiser on Dec. 17 will feature a book-signing by Gov. Ehrlich. You can also receive a complimentary author-inscribed copy of America: Hope for Change by making a contribution to our campaign.

Please join us on Dec. 17 with speakers Gov. Bob Ehrlich and Secretary Larry Hogan of Change Maryland.

Cubans See Similarities between Obama and Castro

Written on March 22, 2012 by Victoria Jackson

If you go to Calle Ocho in Miami, and in particular the restaurant Versailles, at certain times in the day you can find a large group of Cubans passionately discussing politics.

They lived communism first hand. Many were jailed fighting Castro. Many have friends and relatives who were killed and persecuted. Their stories need to be heard. Here are the first of a series I will be presenting to you. Miami is my hometown and I was born in 1959, right when communism invaded Cuba. My childhood was saturated with the knowledge that my friends and neighbors came to my free country to escape the terror of communism.  These Cuban friends see this freedom they risked their lives for disappearing, with the growth of government, especially in the Obama administration.  I share their concern. This evil must be stopped.

"My Cuban friend told me that when Castro took over, religion was outlawed, Christians were jailed, freedom of speech - gone, and this is how the kindergarten children were brainwashed: they were told to bow their heads, close their eyes and ask God for candy, when they opened their eyes, there was no candy there, then they were told to bow their heads and ask Castro for candy, when they opened their eyes there was candy there."

This is the welfare state Obama is trying to create. He is rewarding welfare recipients and punishing the working middle class with regulations, fees and fines. The first step in stopping this is being aware of it… http://patriotupdate.com/articles/cubans-see-similarities-between-obama-and-castro

Iowa caucuses, New Hampshire, the Republican Party and The King of Hearts

A repristic shibboleth of sorts. I’m just saying…

January 11, 2012

The King of Hearts

Kevin E. Dayhoff

It is fairly well accepted among keen observers of national politics that the Iowa caucuses of Tuesday a week ago are much more about political and media-theater than a prognosticator of who will vie for the Oval Office this fall.

As one political pundit put it, you pick corn in Iowa; you pick the next president in New Hampshire. Maybe so – maybe not. I’d rather look at Iowa as a political combine – a soulless machine that separates the wheat from the chaff.

Above and beyond the not-too-small matter that the January 3rd caucus is a win-win moneymaking machine for Iowa, the political opera is otherwise literally, repristically, heuristically, and metaphorically a brutal threshing and winnowing process.

First the candidates are milled and pounded and then thrown in the air. The chaff – the lightweights and the also-rans – are then ground into dust and blown off to the side to be plowed back into the earth.

Yet Iowa in 2008 was an anomaly of sorts. In the January 3, 2008, Democratic Party caucuses… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4852

1936 presidential election: Landon in a Landslide: The Poll That Changed Polling

1936 presidential election: Landon in a Landslide: The Poll That Changed Polling

Retrieved January 10, 2012 http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/5168

The 1936 presidential election proved a decisive battle, not only in shaping the nation’s political future but for the future of opinion polling. The Literary Digest, the venerable magazine founded in 1890, had correctly predicted the outcomes of the 1916, 1920, 1924, 1928, and 1932 elections by conducting polls.

These polls were a lucrative venture for the magazine: readers liked them; newspapers played them up; and each “ballot” included a subscription blank.

The 1936 postal card poll claimed to have asked one fourth of the nation’s voters which candidate they intended to vote for. In Literary Digest's October 31 issue, based on more than 2,000,000 returned post cards, it issued its prediction: Republican presidential candidate Alfred Landon would win 57 percent of the popular vote and 370 electoral votes…http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/5168

State lawmakers hope to ride anti-incumbent wave to Congress

Nearly a half-dozen Maryland state lawmakers are hoping to exploit the nation's anti-incumbent mood with campaigns for Congress that focus heavily on Washington's dysfunction.

Two Republican state senators, David Brinkley of Frederick County and Nancy Jacobs of Harford County, announced plans this week to run for the House of Representatives. A third, Democrat C. Anthony Muse of Prince George's County, is expected to toss his name in for the Senate on Thursday... http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/bs-md-congress-2012-20120104,0,7834362.story

Q&A DISCUSSIONS

Q: Do you feel that there is a conflict of interest if a justice's spouse (Thomas, in this case) was lobbying either for or against the case being brought before the court?
John Steele:
We have to be careful when using a spouse's political activities or views to disqualify a judge. Spouses are permitted to have political lives, too. Judge Reinhardt, in the 9th Circuit, is married to an ACLU lawyer who had been involved in the same sex marriage case, which was then assigned to Judge Reinhardt. He didn't recuse himself and I think he was correct not to do so.

MULTIMEDIA

Mike Ross
Barney Frank is not alone. A number of long-serving members of Congress won't seek reelection in the upcoming cycle.
