Security Theater: Napolitano: Keeping shoes on during airport screening coming — eventually

Napolitano: Keeping shoes on during airport screening coming — eventually

One of the biggest annoyances of air travel in the post-Sept. 11, 2001, world may soon be a thing of the past.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Yossi Sheffi, an Israeli-born expert on risk analysis at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the TSA's policy of making air passengers remove shoes during screening:
"You don’t take your shoes off anywhere but in the U.S. — not in Israel, in Amsterdam, in London. We all know why we do it here, but this seems to be a make-everybody-feel-good thing rather than a necessity."

TSA Watch: America’s funniest federal agency? No, seriously

TSA Watch: America’s funniest federal agency? No, seriously

If the TSA wasn’t violating our civil rights with its intrusive screening procedures, as so many passengers claim, and as Texas Rep. David Simpson explains in his thoughtful commentary, then all of this might be kind of funny.

[...]

Playing along with the joke, Janet Napolitano insisted the shoesmust continue to come off during screening in a speech this week to a tourism conference. Her remarks drew applause.

[...]

And then there’s exhibit #2 — our friend Blogger Bob. If you don’t think the TSA’s social-media mouthpiece has a sense of humor, then you haven’t read his April Fool’s Day post about invisible space aliens being screened.

[...]

How about last week’s bomb “drill” in Minneapolis that TSA forgot to tell local law enforcement about? Oops. That had a few observers chuckling, didn’t it?

Anchorage Daily News: Cissna back in Juneau after refusing TSA search

Cissna back in Juneau after refusing TSA search

By BECKY BOHRER
The Associated Press

Read the entire article and be appalled: "... Cissna, D-Anchorage, is a cancer survivor who has had a mastectomy. She underwent the full-body scan at Seattle’s airport but was singled out for a further pat-down search, her second, she said, within three months..."

[...]

"Since new screening measures began last year, the American Civil Liberties Union has reported receiving more than 1,000 complaints from travelers — including breast cancer survivors — who said they endured intrusive pat-downs. Among other things, the travelers claim TSA agents patted their genitals and ran fingers through their hair or along their bras or waistbands..." http://www.adn.com/2011/02/24/1720607/alaska-lawmaker-back-in-juneau.html

The TSA can't control how you talk

The TSA can't control how you talk

Perhaps you have reflected while passing through airports, as I have many times over the past several years: Here are federal employees with wages and benefits whose job is to move a plastic dishpan from one end of a table to the other.
It is all part of the rich absurdity of contemporary air travel. First, you are fleeced by the airlines, which cannot apparently make a go of their business without nickel-and-diming the customers. Pay for a seat that has about as much space as you would have had in the hold of a ship on the Middle Passage, unless you pay more for some room. Pay for your bag. Pay more for an extra bag. Ryanair considered installing pay toilets on its planes, an idea whose time is surely coming... http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/mcintyre/blog/2010/11/the_tsa_cant_control_how_you_talk.html

Kevin Dayhoff - The Tentacle: Thanksgivings’ Traditions – Past and Present

November 24, 2010

Thanksgivings’ Traditions – Past and Present
Today, historians bicker over when and where the first Thanksgiving took place in America; and pundits opine upon its meaning. According to some, the roots of our American Thanksgiving tradition began when 102 Pilgrims left Plymouth, England, in July 1620 to escape religious persecution.

They came to the New World as illegal immigrants and founded a colony of their own so that they could practice their beliefs without fear of retribution, and to be free to persecute others who don’t believe as they do or speak their language.

But essentially they wanted to practice their religion without government interference, and since the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) did not exist at the time, they were allowed to do so.

Since the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) did not exist at the time, they were able to travel freely without surrendering all their personal freedoms and sense of privacy, or being degraded, humiliated and treated like common criminals simply because they wanted to travel...  http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4072

YouTube: Young Boy strip searched by TSA (Original w/ Full Story Description)

Young Boy strip searched by TSA

Lets get the facts straight first. Before the video started the boy went through a metal detector and didn't set it off but was selected for a pat down. The boy was shy so the TSA couldn't complete the full pat on the young boy. The father tried several times to just hold the boys arms out for the TSA agent but i guess it didn't end up being enough for the guy. I was about 30 ft away so i couldn't hear their conversation if there was any. The enraged father pulled his son shirt off and gave it to the TSA agent to search, thats when this video begins.

******* THIS VIDEO OCCURRED AT SALT LAKE CITY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ON NOVEMBER 19TH AT AROUND THE TIME OF 12:00 PM **********

Pakistani native breezes past TSA

How can a terrorist suspect of Pakistani descent get past TSA more easily than my wheelchair-bound elderly family members?

By Kevin Dayhoff May 5, 2010

Can someone please explain to me why it is so difficult to get my wheelchair-bound 70-some-odd-year-old Mother and my 90-couple-year-old Aunt past Transportation Safety Administration security procedures without being hassled horrendously?

And yet the New York Times Square attempted car bombing terrorist suspect, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Pakistan, Faisal Shahzad, got on a plane and was on his way down the runway to Dubai before he was arrested?

I’m just asking?

It has been reported that Shahzad purchased his one-way plane ticket at the last minute with cash and had no luggage – and was on the federal "no-fly" list.

An Associated Press account says, “He was in custody after being hauled off a Dubai-bound plane at Kennedy Airport that he had been able to board Monday night despite being placed on the federal "no-fly" list.

“Authorities had planned to arrest Shahzad, who had been under constant watch from mid-afternoon, at his Connecticut home, but lost track of him, two people familiar with the probe told The Associated Press. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to talk publicly about the breach in surveillance.”

[…]

“Customs and Border Protection officials, who were on the lookout for Shahzad since the early afternoon, recognized his name on the manifest and ordered the flight stopped so they could arrest him. The flight had not left the gate at that point, the official said.

“Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano credited Customs officials with recognizing Shahzad's name on the manifest and stopping the flight. But she had little explanation for how he was able to board the plane with a last-minute ticket.”

And, how in the heck did he find a parking space in Times Square.

Federal air marshals subdued a man who authorities say attempted to "light his shoes on fire" on a United flight from Washington Reagan to Denver Wednesday night, federal law enforcement officials told ABC News.

Authorities say an explosive team is on the way to the airport, and that while the presence of explosives has not yet been confirmed, they believe it was an attempted "shoe bomb."

The suspect was identified by authorities as a diplomat in the Qatar embassy in Washington, Mohammed al Modadi. The FBI said the man had full diplomat immunity as the 3rd secretary and vice-consul.

The Washington Post is reporting: "Robert Harding, President Obama's second nominee to head the Transportation Security Administration, withdrew his name from consideration Friday night because of questions over his background as a defense contractor, the Associated Press reports. In January, Erroll Southers withdrew from consideration for the TSA job over different issues."

The Tentacle : Spontaneous Incompetence by Kevin E. Dayhoff January 13, 2010

In an incident, almost totally ignored by the dominant United States major news media, comes word that an American hero, the renown Army Green Beret-turned-Iraq/Afghanistan war correspondent, Michael Yon, was “arrested” January 5 as he entered the country for failing to disclose his income.

No, as unbelievable as it may seem, I am not making this up.

The news comes barely 10 days after a 23-year-old Nigerian named Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was essentially given a pass by authorities to fly about the country, as a result of bureaucratic bungling of byzantine proportions, with a bomb in his pants which he planned to kill nearly 300 airplane passengers on Christmas Day.

It is in this context that Mr. Yon, the award-winning American combat-journalist, wrote on his Facebook page at 11:05 A.M. January 5:

“Got arrested at the Seattle airport for refusing to say how much money I make... Their videos and audios should show that I was polite, but simply refused questions that had nothing to do with national security….”

[…]

According to Aleksandra Kulczuga, writing for the web publication, The Daily Caller, [http://dailycaller.com/] Mr. Yon said: “I was caught off-guard by the question [about my income]…” Yon, an American citizen traveling on an American passport, said he cooperated fully when asked standard security questions about what was in his suitcase: “I was on better-than-normal behavior.”

[…]

For those who are not familiar with Mr. Yon, there is no better place to start than with his web publication, “Michael Yon Online Magazine,” http://www.michaelyon-online.com/...

Full body airport images not pretty By Damon Sims

Full-body airport images not pretty, but not p*rn

By Damon Sims

August 04, 2009, 10:50PM

When I heard that Cleveland's airport was one of only three in the country to try out the latest full-body image scanners at security checks, my reaction was swift: Ew. After seeing images of real humans on the scanner screens, I've modified my response: Ew. Ew. Look, I don't know how else to put this: It ain't pretty. Even the...
